I'm unsure of what I want to do and need help deciding. physicist/cosmologist - I want to find out what dark energy is and see if my idea of an equation for gravity could be implemented Pro's - I love the physics concepts and am most interested in space. con's - I hate math, although I never saw a point to making conversions and now with physics I do. In the 5th grade I was put in an algebra class for middle school credit and got to leave early because I would finish my problems exceptionally faster than everyone else. I eventually got bored with math and faded away. I'm trying to respark my interest with physics but you have to know math to know phys…

I'm a biology major, associates degree, took "a semester" off which turned into 4 years. I'm getting ready to return in the spring to get my BS, but I have some concerns. First off, my GPA is low. 2.7, to be exact, as I was quite unmotivated and had no goal while I was in school. I now know what I would like to do, which is study molluscs, specifically I'd love to study and research the evolution of nudibranchs. My question is this: Is this a realistic goal? I've been out of the game for so long that I'm really not even sure where to begin, aside from speaking with an adviser of course. Any advice would be wonderful.

I hope there are some pharmacists and pharmacologists on this site. I have narrowed my choice to the two but can't yet decide. I've herd pharmacology is better than pharmacy based on the type of work, but pharmacists get paid more. Which has the better prospects? I live in Canada, if that makes any difference.

Good, I can delete the post. While walking my dog, I realized a post that appears to be advertizing would be called spam, and I could be banned for spamming. Thanks CharonY for the effort of making something of good of this thread. This discussion is going better in another forum where the people come from a historical perspective. Personally, I think this new education technology is like putting wheels on a cart that has been dragged ever since the beginning of the twentieth century. I am very excited about the social ramifications, and the discussion I want isn't likely to happen here.

Hello, this is the first time I've posted on a forum so I'd really appreciate any advice anyone may have. I've almost completed a degree in biochemistry and chemistry and I am interested in doing a PhD studying MS. I generally get 1sts, although they're never the highest, but I feel I am a hard worker and I genuinly have a massive interest in this subject and would love a career in research if possible. My biggest concern is my relative lack of biochemistry lab experience and I don't know how much this may hinder me. Whilst I initially lacked confidence in chemistry labs during my degree, my final year chemistry project really boosted my confidence and I really enjoye…

I live in Washington State, and attend a local community college. I wish to major in Mechatronics and as of right nowI have completed my general physics series as well as differential, integral, and vector calculus (as well as Gen Chem and other classes). This coming year I will be taking Engineering classes: statics, dynamics, and mechanics. In addition to these classes I will be taking Multivariate, Linear Algebra, and Differential equations. I am excited to finally be able to start the engineering series, but I am a little concerned about the math classes. I am confident in my math skills and study abilities, as such I am rather confident that I will succeed. But, I a…

Hello all, I hope I am posting in the right forum, this is my first time on this site. This is my same handle as on physicsforums. A quick background: I am 23. I was working in banking, making around 85k, and was on track to make 120k next year, and about 500k in 2 years when my boss was handing on giving me her business. Then I got fired this week over a ridiculous code of conduct violation (doing a transfer for a friend...not sure why this is illegal as nobody complained). So, now I am doing some thinking. I have a 3.13 in economics from temple. I was lucky as hell to be making the money I did with that kind of degree and nothing else really jumping…

Hello everybody I'm 15 right now and in two years I will have finished high school, so I want to double major in Mathematics and Physics while doing a minor in Philosophy (if anybody is interested I would like to go either into theoretical physics, applied mathematics or pure mathematics). Does anybody know of any good universities in the United States that would allow you to take the classes I want to, in addition may you add some information about their acceptance rate for internationals, whether they are need blind, and a link to their site would be very useful. Thanks in advance.

I've long had a fascination with the animals that occupied the Americas before the arrival of humans -- not just the mammoths, but the beasts few hear of, like the American lion and rhinoceros. I've just read The Ghosts of Evolution, which drew out some ecological relationships that might have existed before these beasts went extinct, and it's ignited my curiosity all the more. While I know the amount of information available on these extraordinary creatures is limited given that they're extinct and we only have fossils to go by, are there any books out there that take American megafauna as their subject?

I have quite a few theories, tons actually. Physics, psychology, biology, and cosmology are all categories i'm interested in and have theories for. I've been trying to get professors emails but the only ones responding to me are professors at small colleges and even then I won't get a response till a few months down the road. Where can I submit some of my theories to get legitimate feedback from?

Wasn't sure entirely in which forum I should post this, but since it sort of has an aspect of further education, I put it in here. I am doing an additional qualification - I am in college, alongside my chosen subjects which are all the sciences (chemistry, biology, physics and maths), the psychology subject didn't seem right for me (my college's specific modules and the teacher - in which I have to write only a 5,000 word essay on any topic of my choice, although I would like to do Neuroscience, I want to keep my option open (forensic science, engineering even) and I also wanted to keep the criminology and psychology pathway open, which is why I was going to my projec…

I graduated from DU as an Environmental Science Major BS. I wish I would have chosen Genetics or Cell Biology at the end of my senior year. I have been working as a Chemist/Metallurgical Technician at a mining company for the last 2 years and amrealizing I am in the wrong field. I have tried getting entry level Genetics and Biology jobs but I have been turned down everytime for 2 years. Should I goback to school and get a degree in genetics or biology? Would that help? Advice would be appreciated

I am an 11th class student from India . I want to get some information about getting into MIT (Massachusetts institute of technology). Are admission criteria for international students different (Is it tougher, than for the US students) ? Presently, I am preparing for Indian Institute of Technology-Joint Entrance Exam (IIT-JEE) which is the toughest exam in India, and one of the toughest in the World. What I am doubtful about is that being an international student applicant, are my chances to get into MIT less (also I can't get there without being offered at least 85% scholarship) ? As compared to SAT, the IIT-JEE questions level are very, very tough. Even a st…

Hi, I'm new to the forums and I need help finding certain books or rather books with particular knowledge prerequisites and handling of the subject. I can only offer examples of such textbooks to make my point and those are David J. Griffith's Introduction to electrodynamics or Mardsen-Tromba's Vector calculus. These books treat fundamental subjects of science starting with basic mathematical knowledge and later advancing to especially complex problems. I'm not sure if this is a question of.. taste, but these two have fulfilled my demands greatly mainly because of the way they treat the subjects by slowly evolving from simple problems. Concerning the subject of these t…

I'm just wondering, what institutions are regarded highly for their research in Staph, in terms of infection, vaccine development and such. I'm interested in the study of surface molecules and toxins of the pathogen and how they are used to cause infection and would be interested in pursuing a PhD in this area.

Hi there I was checking out a thread about us crashing into andromida galaxy simply browseing and noticed the thread was hijacked and turned into a argument of kinds. For those who don't know me I'm new to the forums and am currently working on my undergraduate. Anyhow basicly someone pointed out that dark energy was responsible for speeding the galaxy up which sounded like gravity. Anyhow if photons don't have mass how could they be speed up ? I thought albert einstien gave the speed of light while traveling through a vacum a fixed number and to me the edge of our galaxy would be vacume. Anyhow its just me pondering I've probably got it all wrong

Hi all I'm new to these forums and indeed science in general. I'm currently a middle aged man who has decided enouth is enouth and I'm on a course to get a degree. Science was something that always interested me at school and this is the course I am heading towards. I plan on studying with the open university as I can't afford to give up my day job but I've enrolled and start the course in febuary. Anyhow here's my question I'm doing s104 which is a introduction to all the basic sciences and fancy myself either working in chemestry or physics the problem is I did my gcses about 15 years ago. I've already got myself a gcse book on maths to remind myself wha…

Hello, I am a russian student from Moscow, I am studying in Moscow state university of Lomonosov, a faculty of bioengineering and bioinformatics. Here I am working in a laboratory in the institute of poliomyelitis. I've got 2 years left before graduating and after that, staying in Moscow for getting a postdoc degree is not a variant for me. That is why I'm willing to find out how hard it is to get a job in some australian laboratory, especially a laboratory where viruses are being studied, and to get a post doc degree there. As i want to immigrate there i am also wondering how hard it is for people of my profession. And of course i need your advice about what universities…

Hey all, First post! So, I graduated in 2010 with B.S. in Human biology and have since worked as a lab tech in a genetics/cell biology laboratory doing cell culture, DNA isolation and various other molecular techniques. I am very interested in applying to PhD programs for either cell biology or metabolic biology/nutritional science and would like to get an idea of my chances for acceptance to PhD programs. Stats: - B.S., Human biology - GPA: ~3.5 in science/math - GRE: 150 Q - 158 V - 3.5 AW - ~2 years of cell culture/molecular biology experience (production, not research, unfortunately) Also, on a slightly different note, is it possible to utilize a ce…

I'm about to graduate from high school on June 4th. I would really like to study chemistry in college and get some kind of job in the future related to chemistry. In the past, I never really had good study habits. Junior high and early high school, I never studied at home. I just used the time in class to do any practice or other form of studying. However, now that I took AP chemistry this year, that has started to change. I took AP chemistry all this year, and I made C's every quarter, both semesters. I'm a B student in math classes when I just do any studying and practice during class time. For chemistry, I tried a lot harder than I normally do, but I admit tha…

Ok, so, this isnt exactly 100% physics related I dont think, but it fits into many different science fields. I am curious is there a field of science or a study thats similar to Astro-biology? I guess I should start here. I am a huge science person, big on space. Its a stretch .. but if I could accomplish and live through one thing, it would be to help discover, develop, enhance existing possibilities of setting up life on a new planet / moon. Example: helping construct a way for people and animals to live on the moon. So in a way, this hits biology but also deals with astronomy Is there a study that deals with this? And if so, whats the best…
