This is chemistry related but i don't think it would be appropriate in the chemistry section because it isn't really science. We all know of the whole Dihydrogen Monoxide thing and how many people fell for it, so, why don't we pick a couple of chemicals, apply a scary sounding (but still accurate) name to it and see if we can do something similar. So, the rules for submission of suggestion will be: 1. MUST be essential to life. 2. Should have lots of bad effects due to excess or lack 3. MUST be real. i'm going to nominate oxygen for this. This dangerous chemical(dioxide) was responsible for chernobyl when it got into the reactor core and has been involved i…

They've always fascinated me, and I've decided to finally treat myself to one for christmas The question is though, which should I buy? I'm looking for one which has the following two features: A good enough magnification to see things like BED BUGS, FACE MITES, and RED BLOOD CELLS. (Would this require more than 1000X magnification?). Also I'd like to be able to see larger things in good detail, such as, the face of a housefly, (For something like this you'd need about 40X magnification, wouldn't you?) The ability to link up to a computer and allow me to move images of what I magnify onto it. The larger and clearer these images, the better. I have a…

[/center] My dear nation! The day we promised came sooner than we hoped and faster than we reckoned. The first good tidings on the manifest victory have been heralded, healing our chests and pleasing our souls and friends, while infuriating our enemies. Here is the state of Islam in the land of two rivers, whose structure is getting stronger, whose flagpole is raising higher, and whose banner is fluttering with the might of the Exalted as a sign of disgrace to the humiliated. Here are your enemies staggering from the adversities, tribulations, and agonies that befell them like mountains to the extent that they stand helple…

So this guy thinks he's figured out how they did Stonehenge, and he's made some videos that show how he thinks they did it. He's using the approach to build a full-scale replica on his farm. Cool story and video from YouTube: http://www.deanesmay.com/posts/1162736381.shtml The guy's own web site: http://www.theforgottentechnology.com/

Hey, I wasn't sure where to post this. Ideally, it would suit a sociology forum I suppose. I recently posted it on a philosophy forum but alas, the discussion quickly degenerated into a debate about the ethics of homosexualism. So I thought I'd repost it here in the hope of a more meaningful discussion. However, in the light of some of the more pertinent posts on the other forum, I'll ammend some parts for lucidity, and others for accuracy... While the following idea may apply to all gender diversions from the polar hetero-homo extremes, for the sake of brevity, I'll just concentrate on male homosexuals. I want also to stress that this is centered around the idea …

Yesterday, I had this crazy idea in my head from no where. My thoughts stated that everything is done for or within a reason. For example: We have to go to the bathroom to dispose our wastes We have bookbags to carry our materials We walk to go from point A to B I sat down to watch TV, or play computer These are some of the examples, and I want you guys to try to prove my silly theorem wrong. An example that something is not done for or within a reason. Good luck.

People get freaked out when they walk into my room and see books strewn about everywhere with various cards, bookmarks, page folds, or other assorted objects acting as placeholders. At any given time I'm actively reading 2-3 books and what books I'm presently reading tend to change quite frequently, with some of those various books strewn about the room swapping into the rotation at various times. All of the books I'm reading are presently nonfiction, usually "dumbed down" approaches to complex topics (i.e. not horribly permeated throughout with specialist jargon or any higher level ideas) Given this approach, it usually takes me about a month or two to finish…

I was watching 'when stunts go bad' the other night, some of it was really quite harsh...including a guy falling to his death doing a tight rope walk between two buildings. The programme specifically said nobody died in any of the scenes they filmed, and then they go and show that. Anyway, it made me think of some of the great death scenes you get in movies (not implying that the tight rope guy scene was great) so are there any particular scenes that particularly make you grimace, is there are drawn out scene that makes you go oooooh, arrrrrrrrr, eeeeeeee. Or is there a satisfying scene when the bad guy gets what he deserves. There's quite a few I can think of, b…

Do not read this rant if you are the least bit easily offended… I don’t know why, but apparently election day is my day to rant about the pussification of the American male. They almost made me late for work, so I’ve spent most of the morning already cursing at them. The last few decades of liberalism and feminism and way overrated sanctity of human life have contributed to the pussification of the men in this country. Now, they’re in slacks and dress shirts with a funny feminine aroma permeating their proximity. Call it cologne, and suddenly it’s ok to smell like roses and fruitcake and still think of yourself as a man. They’re driving 10 mph under th…

I think all too often the praises of sandwiches are humbled. Places like subway and the like have lost the classic aspects of a sandwich. So i wanted to create this thread devoted simply to the art of sandwiches. the best food next to tacos. so, discuss, and build your favorite sandwich. nothing pretentious like pickled galvanized nails on sourdough. so, sandwich: Boiled ham, roasted peppercorn turkey with havarti dill cheese on seeded jewish rye topped with romaine lettuce, tomatoes, spanish onions and a jalapeno mustard. or mayonnaise pending the mood. I want to hear your sandwiches for inspiration!

Maybe this is the wrong section... Anyway, I was wondering do you think or can you say with certianity whether or not intelligence varies in large amounts between people. If you took a population and gave them all sorts of test with several different aspects (Alot of people would find IQ not so great for putting a number on intelligence, but it is an indication of something, but for I guess best results or compliance, other tests would be done) of intelligence do you think overall there are clear groups of people that are exponentially smarter than the rest. Take people like Einstein (accepted as smart) and compare him to say an average person, how much difference is …

Well, right now im a sophomore in high school so I still have a lot of time to decide what I want to do with my life, but I still want to figure it out. I really like physics so I've always thought I go to college for that. The only problem is that I'm not sure what kind of career that would lead to. Like I get my degree and then what? I've also thought about being a teacher in high school buit I'm not sure about that. It would be cool to be a college professer or something but again I'm not sure about if I want to do that and it seems like it would be hard to get a position like that. My main problem I guess, is that I'm not sure what I would do with physics …

Post your nominations for "post of the week" here. It can be a single post, or just part of a post... just funny, or a great intellectual contribution. Something (perhaps past polls) tells me that people here read books, at least a lot more than most of the population. So, what are you reading now? I'm reading The Long Tail, a book about the transformative power of the Internet in connecting people to niches, so everyone's taste begins to wander farther from the mainstream. If you can capitalize on those wanderers, you can actually make MORE money than if you focus on the mainstream. Why? The answer is a long tail statistical distribution in terms of what people consume: This pattern is seen in a number of online retailers, including Amazon, Netflix, Rhapsody, and the iTunes Music Store. eBay and Goo…

I do not want to accuse anybody of doing anything wrong, but I'm getting the impression that somebody here is up to no good. I'm hoping that one of the honest moderators of SFN will see this thread and help figure out what is really going on. Somebody has been trying to hack into my forum today. He or she was rapidly making password reset requests for my administrator account. I received over 20 notifications of these requests in my e-mail. Here is a screenshot of my inbox: At the same time, that person was attempting to login the forum using my username and different passwords. Somebody was obviously really trying to break into my forum's administrator …
