The Universe expands at an increasing rate. I observe the night and the stars that shine. I notice how various, complex, and great, And wonder how more there are than mine. With star and planet in sync like clocks, How alike are we to them, how same? The forces governing the large, cosmic rocks Are akin to the forces which give us fame. Could our actions or even our complex behavior Be nothing more than an impending reaction? Does life itself require a grandiose savior, Or is it a simple human misconception? For the matter responsible for even our flaws, Are objectively known to follow universal laws.

Although men can be victims of domestic abuse, typically women become the victims and men the perpetrators. Reaching the point of abuse may be important for many couples as a means of legitimating separation as a need instead of a "mere want" that could be judged as selfish on the part of either or both partners. My question is why do women typically end up as victims and men as perpetrators. Is it merely yet another expression of traditional gender role patters or is there something deeper? Is there maybe something about male/female attitudes toward relationships, commitment, and dealing with challenges that leads to domestic violence and its asymmetries? This is…

It is to the pagan goddess Eostre that I dedicate this thread, in honor of the reason for this holiday which is sadly no longer remembered, and in recognition of the impostor that stands in her stead.

Currently, is there any demand at the moment for astronauts with extensive science knowledge/background to go and work in space? Will there be any increase in demand for it in the near future? When are we expecting more scientists to be sent into space to undertake scientific experiments for the benefit of mankind?

A friend of mine who is cable and pipe layer discovered this object whilst digging. It's heavy for its size and appears to have copper in it judging by the greenish mottling...possibly a bronzey material: you can see the metal a bit better in the bottom picture It might have had a tang or handle judging by the broken protrusion. It's about 3 inches long and was found in England. Any ideas?

I have had this thought for a long time and figured i would share it with the sf community. Now this is a big WHAT if but what if someday we make alien contact. Rather it be in person or a sort of communication, Would it be readily acceptable in modern society? Will the world accept what has happend and adapt? In 50-100-250 yrs will it be normal to have (alien) friends on face book and the world goverment have (alien) politicians. This seems far fetched i agree but so did some other ideas that were (((impossible))) until now there are jumbo jets in the sky and helicopters. Just wondering if the day would come were sitting on our back porch and...o look at that john... bi…

  11. Dear Group, I am a researcher in Linguistics from India, and trying to master aspects of machine learning and while doing so I tried to receive some questions on Statistics, and two models I am trying to read Naïve Bayes and HMM. If any one of the learned members of the group, can kindly absolve my queries, I would be grateful enough. I. Some Questions on Statistics: a) Is Θ (theta), -the paramater computed as the probability of the domain of the variable? b) There are various kinds of distributions like binomial, normal, etc. looking at the data how may we decide how would we decide which distributions to fit in? c) …

Now it’s been established fact that UFO sighting since 1940s, now its over 70 years worldwide reporting of UFO sight seeing. Just wondering if they are really intelligent life forms from deep space, what taking them so long before them finally appear like regular visiting aliens before masses of people and on national TV? Why they just showing us glimpse of their flying machines some times beams of lights and then disappear in vastness of universe. I am not skeptic, but at same time i know its logical to believe on fact if we humans could evolve on earth, then there are millions of possible planets even in our milky way that could sustain intelligent life. …

  15. Do you think it's a good idea? Does it make you uncomfortable? Do you feel that it's a successful tactic when you have romantic intent? I myself have approached three random girls in the past month, and successfully gotten dates with each (I attribute it to random luck. And dashing good looks). I've also approached random people and made new friends. Is this how most people meet new friends and romantic interests? Until I went to university, I never did such a thing and was never particularly extroversive, so I'd like new viewpoints on the topic.

  16. A renaissance soul is somebody who is so diverse that he gets into multiple and different areas and develops a variety of skill sets. Though, for the people on the outside it looks like they're wasting their time and are never able to settle down. Back in the renaissance era getting into multiple areas was a must (ala Leaonardo DaVinci), but nowadays society rather has the attitude of "choose something you like and stick to it" as in "specialize yourself and be an expert". Renaissance souls get labeled as "jack of all traits and a master of none", day dreamer, or a person with ADHD never able to focus on one thing. I recently turned 25 and I still really haven't fou…

So while thinking about the oceans i had a wondrous idea on space. I though of a near impossible way to get unlimited free(ish) energy that could power everything on earth for the entirety of earths existence. Upon pondering the idea it also came to me to use a similar system as a way to travel or move materials between different celestial bodies. So hear i will discuss the first idea. >Using the Moon's motion as a conduit to change gravitational energy into electrical energy.< We know and can predict where the moon will be relative to the earth at any given point in time. we can model where it was and where it will be for many many years. This idea …

I think the best one I've found was the xkcd 3-D conversion. The rest seem to suck. Google has the fake GMail move or whatever they called it. Youtube has a video celebrating 100 years. SFN has probably the worst with Cap'n's lame sense of humor.

  20. Spring is here, apparently... I was just thinking about some moments from my childhood across the vast sea of experience and sentimentality that separates my present self from my past self and was thinking about what spring meant for me. However, only descriptive and dramatic replies please, which read like Hemingway or Camus. I'll be happy with one reply if I get it. Waking sleepily from my bed, groggy, wiping sleep from my young eyes, I stumbled to the bathroom in my striped pyjamas, crumpled behind the knees due to sleeping in a foetal position. The frosted glass windows let the new sunlight through in crazy patterns as I gave myself a soldier's bath - crotch, ar…
