I just read a news article that says Firefox is losing market share, and IE is gaining market share. The article is on ComputerWorld's web site. http://www.computerworld.com/developmenttopics/websitemgmt/story/0,10801,103914,00.html

Some good background in this article: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/08/16/AR2005081601700.html That one might be subscription; if so, try this one: http://money.cnn.com/2005/08/16/technology/computer_outages/ I have a funny feeling that this particular attack will have lasting implications, for two reasons: 1) It deeply affected the news media. One of the stories above quotes an admin as predicting that it will take weeks to repair the damage. 2) It underscores the problem of legacy OS installations. Reportedly, this worm only affected Windows 2000 computers. What I think this event has uncovered is the vast number of compu…

I just went from Knoppix to Ubuntu. So far, I love Ubuntu. I don't see a reason to use MS anymore, but I kept it just in case I need it later. Ubuntu has a lot of the cool little tricks from MS(like alt tab, alt F4, add/remove programs) and is a lot faster than Windows XP.

http://www.google.com/codejam05 The above is a link to an online programming competition official site. See if you out here can actually get anything out of it. basically the programming assessing criteron is algorithm. in addition to that, does any one know any website that programmers meet, forums and which provide(s) persistently uptodate resources in account of algorithm? you know, I am still learning Java, but I just want to be, one day, capable of joining a competition like that....

So i'm hosting my own website at freewebs.com But the thing is i can't mass download all of my files. I recently found some of my CD-RWs I've had in this CD tower. Now I'm jittery to put all the webdesign stuff I have onto them. But I can't mass download everything from freewebs cause they don't allow that. I'd have to individually download each thing. Isn't there something called weasel or something that looks through the whole site directory and down to my subfolder's files and let's me download all the files? I tried googling weasle but it's not what i was looking for. Webgrab seems interesting but I want all the pages and files listed. YAY! NE…

Just curious which Java IDE you folks like best. I've been using NetBeans, recently upgrading from 3.6 to 4.1, but I'm not a Java expert at all. I've also played around with JBuilder and Eclipse. I like the GUI-building features in JBuilder, but I kinda prefer the NetBeans environment in general. But I'm curious what other folks think.

Just to follow up on the thread "programming languages" Could I just ask for opinions on one question: What platform would you rather play video games on (enjoy playing)?: PC or mobile phones Thanks for any replies. PS: Can I just say that there are twice as many mobile phone users in the world than PC users (in general - obviously a lot use PCs and mobiles). 0.60 billion PC users 1.28 billion mobile phones

Hey guys, I'm trying to take my Java programming knowledge to a higher level. I'm up to speed in the basics of writing simple programs in Java, and I'm currently using NetBeans 4.1 and the 1.5 (5.0) SDK and JRE. I can write simple (console-based) applets for school projects, and I've run through the simple tutorials on how to (for example) build an consume a simple web service, set up a basic web application, and construct a simple GUI for a standalone app. What I'm kinda hoping for is a more advanced book or web site that kinda starts at this point and kicks me off in the direction of more advanced application programming in Java. Ideally the book or site would …

So aim provides this 'service' called "aimfight" at http://www.aimfight.com where you plug in two screennames and it compares the amounts of buddies existent in 3 friend levels. (or something along those lines). Here is the thing, you dont have to be an aim member in order to do the comparing. So, what is the trick behind it? It doesnt seem like aim would provide a passwordless way to retrieve the number of names in a user's buddy list. My point is, isnt this potentially dangerous in that crackers could retrieve 'buddy names' from a user's list without the need of a password? Or could this mean that people could actually message their friends without having to…

Has anyone here gone to graduate school (or know anyone who has) for computer science? I am doing the big search now and would appreciate any suggestions about programs. I am mainly interested in a few lines of research: brain science, AI, and robotics. But, I am open to other facets of computer science research. If you have heard, experienced, or read anything positive about a specific program, I would like to hear about it. Thanks! P.S. Here is my current school list (in no particular order): Brown University University of Massachusetts - Amherst University of Maryland - College Park Dartmouth College Rochester University University of California - Davis Y…

It has been officially been announced. The next version of Windows will be called Windows Vista. It will be released in 2006. Microsoft hasn't officially said too much about it yet, but I know a few things about it. First, the GUI will be very high-tech. You are going to need a good graphics card to run the next Windows. A major feature will be the new type of icons. The icons will actually show a preview of the entire document, or picture. It will be much more than the Windows XP thumbnails. It will also feature IE7. Not too much is known about IE7, but I heard it will have tabbed browsing. Here is a little more technical information from Microsoft:

I've been trying to write programs for 2 years now and am struggling to find the right language to start with. I began with C and learnt the basics. But this wasn't ideal for my purpose. I want to develop software for mobile phones. This has its own set of programming languages as you probably know Java (J2SE) becomes J2ME C++ becomes Symbian, Brew or Mophun (c++) Python becomes python Which language would be the easiest to learn for me(I'm pretty much a complete beginner - some very light knowledge of C). I heard that python is quite easy. I've looked at the code for J2ME and Symbian/Brew/mophun and its very hard. T…

I figured it'd be nice to have a thread that analyzed all the myths about computers (be it hardware, software, OS, shopping, etc) and find out which are right and which are wrong. More importantly, to find out which are right and which are wrong and why they are that way. First, to post some rules. We want this thread to be as clean as possible. That means that if someone posts a decision on a myth that you disagree with, send them a private message. Tell them your point of view and tell them why you see it that way. They may agree with you, or they may not--that argument will occur in private messages. This requires participation on both sides--the would-be corrector…
