IBM and Toshiba have developed a new superchip called The Cell. It defies Moore's Law as it is well ahead of its time. It's clock speed it said to be over 4GHz (intel's best is 3.8GHz) It works by having specially tuned transistors (it has 234 million of them) and more significantly has 9 cores. You know Intel are showing off their dual processors.... this has 9 cores!!!!! IBM experimented putting The Cell chips together which allowed them to handle 16 trillion calcluations per second. Significantly it doesnt have massive power useage and does now nead extreme cooling measures. The blueprints for it were showsn at the International Solid State Circ…

I know little about computers. I can barely navigate to this forum and a few others. Lately I have been receiving emails from this organization: abuse@smileglobal.com They are accusing me of sending illegal attachments to someone I have never heard of. Since I have trouble sending attachments at all and only send them to a few friends, I am baffled. Could this mean someone has obtained access to my email login info and is using my email to spead some sort of mayhem? Are these people connected to some sort of scam? Should I respond to their accusations? I know this isn't an honest-to-god techie question but I would nevertheless appreciate some …

I was working on a report for school (on the computer), and so I can take my work to and from school, I saved all of my data on a floppy disk. I was working on it until I left about 3 hours ago (I had a little accident involving a car door, so I came back home), and now my computer won't read the disk, instead I get a pop up message that says: . I clicked yes, and got a pop up with a bunch of scroll bars, first one saying: "Capacity: 3.5", 1.44MB, 512bytes/sector" (only option), second saying "File System: FAT" (only option), third saying: "Allocation: Default allocation size" (only option), a text box with the words "Volume Lable: [text box]". Below that was the wor…

I just did a google search for "YT2095" as my friend said he did it and it lights up like a christmas tree with hits. he was right, no less than 23,300 hits! now I don`t know about you, but that`s OverKill in my book. many of those will be the same site etc... so why bother storing such repeated junk on their network? surely it would save space and money just to keep the rellevant info only?

I recently had some problems with my bootloader orginating from a borken Cd reader...my other writer, no matter what I did, was never recognized by BIOS...so I installed a bootloader on a floppy and, a word of advice, never isntall the rpm for smartboot.... w/o knowing my HD bootloader was replaced with a hardware bootloader, I installed FreeBSD. To my suprize I was not able to boot into it. Nor was I able to get back in FC3! I read up on GRUB then used the files still in my boot partition to create a floppy boot that got me in fedora. From there I dlaoded the latest GRUB, copied all my previous GRUB files, installed it, copied old image, devices, and boot settings…

I`ve finaly fixed that old 486 laptop and have it working off a car battery now. it has no HDD, only the HD (1.22mb) floppy drive. I rem when I was an educational S/ware writer WAY BACK, an we had a room full of 286 machines. I used to uses QBASIC to write in. All would fit just great on a 720k floppy as well as the program! any idea where I can still get this from (for free if possible as I`m sure there`s no call for it now)? or even if it still exists? and if not QBASIC then any other BASIC that will allow parallel port access with (2 or 3)86 type overheads, and fits on a single floppy. My PC is acting wierd these days. I've got AMD 2000+, 2x 256MB DDR Hynix, a normal 300 W SMPS, GeForce 4 MX 420(64MB DDR) at 4x, AC'97, Chipset is 7VTXE, Seagate 20GB Drive. Now the problem is, when I set the bus frequency of the RAM or the Processor to 133MHz(either of the two), the PC fails to start. I mean there's no display on the monitor. But when they're @ 100MHz the PC works fine. So, now I'm not able to use either my processor (133Mhz x 12.5 but now running at 100MHz @12.5), or my RAM (133MHz x 2 but running at 100Mhz x 2) to full potential. Is it the motherboard problem, or is it the SMPS problem. I'm suspecting the SMPS, but would like someone to guide …

For christmas this year I got a new motherboard and processor and a new graphics card. Both are PCI express and therefor incompatible with my old ones (people have been suggesting i switch them out one at a time). I took out my old Mobo/proc and gfx card and replaced them with the new ones, found out the new Mobo is designed for SATA drives instead of ATA, mine are ATA. I have 2 ROM drives and 2 harddrives, at least 3 of which i need to have available. so i went out and got a PC I card that gives me 2 extra IDE slots. put it all together and turn it on. it gives me a screen that asks if i want to boot in safe mode, says the screen might be showing up because of hardware c…

I tried upgraded our old computer from 98 to XP this morning without success. It said I needed to unistall programs that couldn't be upgraded (pc anywhere, some game controler thing and a few other programs). Well, I looked for them everywhere but i couldn't find them, so I can't really unistall them. Ok, no problem. Rather than upgrade, I just want to wipe off the old OS and put XP on in place of it. No upgrading. But now it wants to know what partition I want to install this to. It gives me one choice that says C: Partition1 9782MB (5764MB free) That doesn't look promising. Does anyone have any suggestions on what the easiest thing to do here is. I don't know to…

Hi all. I'm working on a thesis about Quantum Computing. Is anyone here experienced about the simulation of the algorithms? I find some difficulties when I had to define oracles/unitary trasformations that implement (for example) a distance mod 2. did anyone find some way to create a unitary transformation/quantum black box/quantum oracle ad hoc?..

I am having problems intalling Mandrake Linux 9.0. I'm currently downloading 10.0 but I thought I might try to sort out these problems anyway. When I insert the disk into my drive and choose "boot from cd-rom drive" it opens up the graphical installer splash screen for Mandrake. However, when I hit install it sputters about for a minute with the screen black. Then it stops doing anything at all and I have to turn off my comp to get out. Do have I to partition before I install? Or could it be something else? Any ideas?

My grandfather bought a used tablet PC at an auction but he is unable to use it because the operating system is password protected. He did not receive any software with his purchase. The operating system is windows xp, the tablet pc edition. Does anyone know how he can get around this? He has no desire to get any of the previous owner’s information off of the pc, only to use it.

so, i just got some surround sound (5.1) speakers for my TV, it can play DVDs, CD-RW, MP3s and all stuff like that, which means i can write music files i make on the surround sound.... but how do i make a file on my computer that uses surround sound to its full effect? like, how can i make a music file which will play in each of the 5 speakers seperately? you know in cinemas with surround sound it sometimes does a sound 'shooting around you', each speaker one at a time flowing from one to the next, that sounds really cool, how can i make one of those? once it's made i just burn it to a CD-RW and play it!

These came from another forum, where they were probably just stolen from somewhere else... In firefox, type "about:config" in the address bar to bring up the configuration editor. Adjust these values accordingly. For boolean types just doubling clicking will switch them. For integers, you will be prompted to enter a value. I have a question. In really complex games such as Halo or whatever, how do they program it to do what it does? I mean, how do you get the computer to manipulate the 3D objects and such, with lighting and all that? What language do they use? Etc. The only games I can make are on my calculator in BASIC. I only know a bit of C++ as well.

I can nolonger install hardware on my Compaq Presiaro PC, because of an 'I/O thread exit, or application request' I figured it might be something to do with windows firewall, but that was turned off. I sort of have Norton Firewall (It claims im at the end of the trial and shoud register and that it is disabled, but now and again it promts me due to a programme accesing the internet etc). Any ideas how to solve this?

I've always read that there are many transistors inside a computer chip. However, when I took the CPU out of an old computer, I cut through the plastic outside shell of the CPU, and it appeared to by empty inside. From the outside, it looked like about 20 metal connectors that enter the CPU. Inside, I saw that they simply go through the CPU, and out the other side. I didn't see any other pieces inside the CPU. I kept cutting the CPU into smaller pieces, but I could find nothing inside. How did the CPU work? I think the name of the CPU was a Z80. The processor was only about 2 Mhz. Wouldn't there still have to be other pieces inside to make it work?
