I noticed that a lot of the programming questions here, while phrased in terms of coding in specific languages, are actually rooted in a broader context of programming itself. People are having problem with the ideas behind programming in general. If we help people with algorithm building, the language-specific syntax falls into place. So, this thread is for tips on programming in general. This isn't about programming in python or programming in java. This is about the fundamental heart of what one needs to do. If anything, it's tips on how to code in PseudocodeTM. I'll start: One of the biggest thing about programming is being able to break a problem down …

Ran across this while doing some research. It's a Wiki at York University that summarizes research topics in Information Systems/Science. It's a pretty good germ of an idea because it's a bit of a step up from the Wikipedia for people actually pursuing research in these areas, serving as a more useful starting point because of all the citations. http://www.fsc.yorku.ca/york/istheory/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

  3. I'd like to share a website that is a collection of links to audio/video courses and lectures in computer science and engineering. http://www.infocobuild.com/education/audio-video-courses/computer-science/computer-science.html This provides a comprehensive collection of computer science lectures from colleges/universities.

  4. Eventually, I want to be able to do some computationally-heavy modeling work, which obviously requires programming knowledge. Is there a specific language that would be good for this type of interest. Where can a newb start learning about building the tools to develop skills to develop stochastic-type models? Thanks!

Here i want to discuss about Linear Voronoi game. The game consists of two players, and a finite set of users placed along a line. Each player has 2m facilities, where m>0 is a fixed integer. The game starts by the first player, placing 2 facilities on the line, followed by which the second player places 2 facilities, and this continues for multiple rounds. Assuming that each user is served by a facility closest to it, the payoff of each player is defined as the number of users served by the facilities of that player. The goal of each player is to maximize his payoff. I try to find an optimal strategies for last move of both players to find their best placements in…

I just thought this article was a little interesting. It kind of suggests that I, for one, should be looking for updates in XNXMath and other various libraries. I'm not sure how to view this in perspective with the push for parallelism and gpu side programming.

  12. Hi! My program, written in managed C++ .NET Framework (quick & dirty replacement for script), was processing a lot of data, using code: FileStream ^stream = gcnew FileStream( this->Filename, FileMode::Open ); BufferedStream ^buffered_stream = gcnew BufferedStream( stream ); and later: int data; while( ( data = buffered_stream->ReadByte() ) != -1 ) { [....] } Example test file was processed in 18 seconds. The bigger file twice that number. When we have thousands of such files, it will take "ages" to process them all.. While waiting over 4 hours to finish processing entire folder of such files, I had illumination (or …

Take any .exe file and convert it to .txt by simply renaming it (you can only do this if you can actually see the extension in the first place, enabling this can be done through My Computer > Tools > View > in 'Advance Settings' box deselect the 'Hide extensions for know files types') and then open the new .txt file. You will see loads of characters such as this: t&ƒþ:u‹FĉFî+À‰FƉFÄÇFìÿÿ¿p ¾0 ë ÇFì þ†Tþ€¾Tþ uVÿFìDЙFÄVƃ~¼ tÿNþuéxÿÿFêÿvè‹ðë8ö„ tƃÿouƒþ8}¼°PFÄPè²ë³¸ ™RPFÄPè€ë£ÿNêVÿv All the squares like this are characters which probably are not even part of the Unicode character list, at least I cannot use them on SFN... so it's basically a long…

The BBC's report: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18867643 Some might say fair play to them; if people are hacking "UK Networks" why shouldn't they return in kind? Although to me, it's a worrying idea, that the UK government will be hacking it's "enemies", who, as usual, have not been specified sufficiently. As if it's not bad enough with the current police-state-like monitoring of the internet, but now, the UK will be attacking-actively defending- as they worded it, anyone it deems as a threat. Which I will stress again, is only ever loosely specified. It's giving too much power to the government, yet again, and by my book it is them trying to police the world; in the same…

As many here already know, the Turing Test is a test for strength of artificial intelligence proposed by computer scientist Alan Turing. It consists of a human and a computer interacting through text (much like modern-day instant messaging). If the human being cannot tell that the computer is a computer and mistakes it for a real human being, it has passed the Turing Test. Now, many have tried (and failed) to come up with so-called "chatbots". I remember back when AOL first came out, "Smarterchild" was very popular. The problem with Smarterchild, however, was that it had simple, stored responses for a given category of questions/statements. As such, it would never add…

If any of you watch Ghost in the Shell, you will easily understand what i am talking about, if you don't i would advise either watching a few episodes, Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex, or trying to dig deep. Ok, in the program there is a cyberspace connection between the persons mind and an avatar in cyberspace. my question is, if you were to be connected to a cyberspace and you were to be viewing lets say a video feed, would you see the video feed in a separate "workspace" aside from your vision? imagine your vision was similar to a desktop workspace, you can only have so many windows opened up. so i would assume that the video feed would be played similar to…

Litereally, I cannot edit the current ones, add a new scheme, there are no currently set schemes, I cannot save as or anything... you can see I cannot edit the current settings for it and if I click 'save as' or 'delete' nothing happens. I have reinstalled windows since I first noticed this problem and it didn't go away which is strange, if I reinstalled XP home again it'd possibly sort the problem, but does anyone know what causes it? It's a strange problem... any ideas as to why this has happened?

I heard of this thing where you can use a skip search through the bible and find some weird stuff. Skip search is where you skip a constant number of characters. The weird kind of stuff is like skip searching for Hussein and finding "gulf war" and "enemy" next to it. I don't remember his name, but he claims it exists. Then mathematicians, who were skeptics, did made their own skip search programs and found it worked. The thing that puzzles me, however, is how it would work with other languages. Like if you skip searched in other languages, how would it produce the same result. Also, there's another argument against the Bible Code arguing that you could skip search…

I came across an amusing example of an AI system being driven into a state of complete hallucination by a relatively simple OCR + machine translation challenge in Japanese when I was writing up some notes about a modern Japanese board game called Nukumi Onsen Kaotakuki - ぬくみ温泉開拓記 , and wanted to check the translation of the text on a particular card used in the game. https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/374055/nukumiwen-quan-kai-tuo-ji-nukumi-onsen-kaitakuki I took the screenshot (below) from a Japanese YT video about the game, and fed it into a Google Images search box, then used the inbuilt OCR facility to capture the text and pipe it into Google Translate, and here is…

(High quality version: https://i.imgur.com/iQEDfXq.png) "Giant intuitive diagram showing how an artificial neural network works; by allowing error signals (aka changes in costs) to “trickle” backwards from the output layer. For example: “Trickling” backwards simply means a value (aka cost) computed at some neuron \(j\) in layer \(L\) is input to values generated by computations of some prior neuron \(k\) in layer \(L-1\). Some cost computed from neuron \(k\) then becomes input to values generated by computations of some prior neuron \(m\), in layer \(L-2\)."
