well, i am a hacker. social engineering is a big part of what i do. it has come to my attention some people are easier to "break" than others. i have been wondering why this is for a couple months now. why are some people easier to succumb to pressure than others? why are their some people that can take all the pain in the world and not do anything while others will spill any thing the opposition wants after being tickled or something like that? Edit: also, why do some people have more of a threshold of pain than others? if these questions are stupid, pleez don't flame me or anything.

I dont know if this is in the right place, but it seemed about right. why are some people nighttime people and others are morning people? i have a friend who goes to bed at 9pm and gets up at 5 am so he can run before school. if it were up to me i would rather take that run at 11 pm just so that i didnt have to get up that early in the morning. what causes that? why do some people prefer to get up late and stay up late while others like to get up early? also, do we know which is more common?

When I was a little kid, my friend asked me for a pencil and I let him have it. He exclaimed to the class it made him smarter. At that time I was thought of being pretty smart. My friends who used the pencils agreed (I wonder why.) But could it really have affected their work? It seemed to affect their math grade, that's for sure. It's placebo magic. I started to believe it, too. But now it seems to be having a negative effect. When I write in something other than a pencil, I make more errors than with a pencil, both mathematical and grammatical. What's this effect called?

Just wondering.. why is it that a person cannot tickle themselves, not relating to any sexual act, but the simple act of tickling to encite laughter and excitement? I would assume that you would know what to expect with regards to what you were doing to yourself... Any ideas?

Lies and Memory I have heard of cases where a person has lied about something so much that (s)he eventually came to remember it that way. I wonder if when people are given a fake account of history it somehow alters our collective reality.

Hey, I was just wondering if anyone here knows the symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia... Also, I was wondering if its possible to maintain a healthy relationship with someone who was diognosed with it. The persen was diagnosed with schitz, adhd, and bipolar diorder at 9. but she has been of medication for the last 6 years (shes now 19) id like to know what medications are out there...if they totally control symptoms...how often to do symptoms occur, and such. I actually need to find out to persuade my mom that *she* isnt a mental crackcase....and i have been researching. but i thought comming to a forum to find it out practically. thanks, rw

... every decision I make, I feel like it's a life or death decision... I mean, it keeps me doing what I feel is right practically all of the time... but still, I don't think it's healthy. My biggest problem is trying to figure out how to use my free time. When deciding whether to work on math, write computer programs, read... I feel like it's imperative that I choose the one that will benefit my future the most, and it's bad enough that I can waste entire hours doing nothing... trying to decide what to do. Also, I can never enjoy spending free time doing anything non-productive... I don't enjoy watching TV, playing games, catching a movie... whatever... I fe…

  11. Hi everyone, can someone give me advice on sample size when conducting a linear regression using the backward method of entry (note the backward entry, as this has created this quandry)? I've seen various guidelines about sample size in relation to the number of IVs being investigated (e.g., Tabachnick & Fidell) who suggest N >= 104 + m, where m = number of independent variables. If this is the case, do I calculate my sample size: a) of 104 and the value of 'm' after running the multiple regression (strange I know), so that I can see the number of predictors appearing in the final model after all non-significant predictors have been discarded? b) Or…

  12. What is the purpose - if any - of nursery rhymes in infant development? It's fairly obvious that some stories have a clear moral lesson, but what is the value in, say "Jack and Jill"? Is it 'If you go up a hill it will hurt a lot and somebody will make a real hash of your first aid treatment'? And what's the significance of a giant anthropomorphic egg falling off a wall? Any thoughts...

My question is what causes this sensation? Also I have seen footage like this but have never got this sensation till I read this book. Weird huh?

If I take some physiological repsonse as the divide betwen cognitive and emotional systems, makes sense to me poor body awareness could be involved with poor ability to recognize/identify emotions So if am on the right track on that would be part one of my question Part two is thinking complete absence of some emotion could be possible assuming the emotion first requires ability to process some sort of sensory input, and if that can not be processed could not be some emotional response

There are situations when you have to be less criticizing and more attention should be paid on productive work, when all the members have united goal. The other situation is when you are under some boss. Who treats you like slaves, and only works for selfish interests and does not allow you to make decisions in order to keep control . In that situation person can not achieve any thing he/she wants to. Still he/she have to live in same situation, how can he survive and live satisfying productive life. Mab

One of my teachers gave a lecture about how your memory works and how that affects your studying. She is not a science teacher, so no, this was not to understand memory, just for studying. She made the following claims: Your short term memory can only hold 5-9 discreet items. Your long term memory is infinite. If you study one night for 60 minutes, that's worse than studying for 10 minutes once a day for six days. You must want to remember something for it to go into your long term memory so you will know it, otherwise it will not. Out of 10 things learned you will forget six in the next 1-2 days, unless you study. I don't really believe th…

This is derived from an idea that started on a thread on immortality. Look it up if you care how it relates. Anyway, the idea is this, a machine (small device of some type) hooks onto the base of the brainstem- right where all the nerves root (they do all go back to one place right?) to the brain. This device is remote controlled by a computer type thing, or another human with a corresponding device--- like switching bodies,, whatever, thats not the important part. The question is, say this device was activated early in the life of the person, inserted into the womb if possible. The brain of this person is not dead, but it is cut off from actual input. If it was not…

When I was a young child, I had this reaccurring dream that I couldn't remember the details but I remembered how I felt. The only time I ever felt like that was during that dream. Evenually, the dreams stopped and I forgot about them. Two weeks ago, I got that feeling and I still have it. Last night, I had the dream again. This time I remembered it. I was in a circular stone temple with pillers around the circumference of one of the middle circles. The space outside the pillers was a hallway surrounded by a darkness that I couldn't quite make out. I was in the middle circle, when I was approached by a figure. The figure told me that I would become king. …

When I was 7 or 8 years old I had a dream: it was the assasination of John F. Kennedy. I dreamed it in black'n'white and it was detailed. After a few years I see at Discovery a broadcast with footage of this assasination. I freaked out remembering that dream. How on Earth did I had that dream then, not even knowing about JFK?

Is it for real? The thread about would you still be "you" if your memory was lost made me think about this. From what I've read, this disorder occurs rarely to people who are suffering from severe abuse or psychological stress. I wonder if PET scans, EEG's, and polygraphs show the same results regardless of the personality that is currently being manifested.
