As far as I know no genes have been proven to relate to Asperger's, but is there a hereditary component to the syndrome? Around 70% is related to comorbid MR and it makes one wonder about organic and genetic (and perinatal) causes.

I'm referring to the r-complex in relation to the triune brain hypothesis. Does anyone think it would be a fair argument to say that homosexuals have more brain excitation in their r-complex on average than heterosexuals on average? I was taking an evolutionary look at this by thinking about how some lizards undergo asexual reproduction.

I am not sure about where to put this topic,so i hope that it is good here. I know that world of dreams in the eye of biology is not explored, but maybe someone can explain me. These days i am having really long and story-like dreams. I often had similar dreams, but these one were strange. So much characters were included , and like 6-7 different stories included . and i remember some... The dreams are "neutral" , neither nightmares nor anything special. Like real life things , nothing unusal. Just some people from like past, that i dont even remember when i talked with them. Also , when i am about to die in a dream,i never wake up. I just continue to dream as a ghost.…

  5. I find the term disorder slightly confusing as per dsm and would appreciate someone giving clear medically accurate definitions. Disease: a medical condition with clear cut aetiology, pathology, treatment response and prognosis. Syndrome: a set of clinical signs and symptoms. No implications of aetiology. Disorder: a syndrome that causes present distress or disability, or increases the risk of suffering death, pain, loss of freedom. Is this accurate?

There is a kind of entertainment called social experiments, aptly pranks, where the experimenters find strangers and put them in convoluted situations to see their responses. These are very fun to watch, and sometimes even used to show some sort of pervasive problem in a group of people. I wonder though, I've read that in order to experiment with humans, social, psychological, biological, or otherwise, you need to get some sort of regulatory approval. Would doing such research without proper permission, especially if it lies over an ethical boundary, be cause for fines or some sort of prosecution? These cases range from seeing if bar patrons are willing to buy und…

When I shake someone's hand my brain gets connected to my hand, which in turn gets connected to that person's hand, which connects to that person's brain. (my brain to his). Oxytocin and noradrenaline get secreted and the person feels good. How did the handshake (as we know it today) originate ?

  8. I've been reading this article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delusional_disorder And it says that the symptoms of delusional disorder include ... But you know what I DON'T see in this list of symptoms? That their belief has to be grossly dispraportionate to the evidence they have to support the claims; that they believe these things ... when those things are clearly untrue. I see a symptom that says that their belief has to be unlikely, but sometimes, unlikely things really do happen! And yet ... I would imagine that would be an essential prerequisite to labeling them a lunatic. For example ... would Barack Obama be suffering from gradiose delus…

I'm trying not to post, but this is bugging me. Testing the ‘Extreme Female Brain’ Theory of Psychosis in Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder with or without Co-Morbid Psychosis http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4466563/ They found lower empathizing bias (EB) scores for those with higher FSIQ (a measure of IQ), but moreso for the ASD-NP group than the ASD-P group (Figure 2). However their downloadable spreadsheet has five ASD-P entries with FSIQs of exactly 500 or 600. It also shows empathizers (Type E) scattered about the spreadsheet, whereas Table 2 reports that none of them were Type E. Perhaps the modulation by IQ wasn't quite significant, so t…

I would like to take a moment to talk about approaching an understanding of psychology with a focus on ideas and beliefs. Now being admittedly not a professional on the subject I'm not sure whether the proposed topic is a no brainer or explored and abandoned as an impractical approach due to mechanistic obscurity, but I do study software and lately I have been focusing on artificial intelligence, so for me the notion of an idea is of practical and more immediate concern. So I'm going to begin this thread by freely musing to construct a model and a framework for beginning to think about ideas as a distinct topic of study and allow more highly educated opinions to weigh…

Hello all. Seldom visit other people houses; and in ocassions I have found dwellings filled with a huge excess of belongings. Read that one cause can be growing in needy families with little belongings and posing a 'revenge' later in life. Surprised lately, seeing a place with barely a path to walk around, the dining table and chairs fully unuseable as all was covered with items not belonging there, books, piles of clothing, toys... Piles of things I could not recognize being in use. The kitchen counters used as shelves with no food preparing space left at all, all closets full of items with no apparent use. Is this an education/habits/laziness/disorganized p…

A lot of people wish to get acceptance for particular groups. However acceptance has more than if a group get vote, get married, hold a job. If the group has more rights does not mean society agrees with it in general. A lot of activist groups believe they can fix this with media. They believe putting a lot of stereotypical or shows that blantently focus on that topic will somehow make people accept it. People dont understand if you want things to be accepted by the majority you need to normalize it, not stigmatize it or tell everyone "We are special snowflakes". I really dont understand how adults and people in this time dont understand this concept. People believe you c…

There are a lot of mainstream addictions out there, most of them closely associated with a destructive or debilitating lifestyle, but as I looked through the list, I thought of a few things that some might consider addictive. For example, I have drawn my entire life as a way of relieving tension, but it has incredible affects on my focus. When I go through a period of time in school when I get stressed, whether it be over grades, people, or simply not understanding a concept, I immediately turn to drawing. Most people would call this a bad habit, but it rarely mattered the consequences I'd face, I had to draw. My teachers would take away my pencil, and I would be unable …

I have a question? Is it possible to have a mental illness that cause the following 3 symptoms: Extreme ear pain? The pain can be constant all day or come as stabbing pain every 5 seconds for hours and then stop. Facial Eye Pain? The pain is mostly the upper eye lid and the eyebrows close to the nose only. The pain can again be constant all day long or sometimes it can be a stabbing pain every 5 seconds or so. The eye lids can also become extremely tired and hard to keep open like they have lost all energy to stay open. The unusual thing about this symptom is that it also comes and goes like the stabbing pain. The eyelids suddenly become exhauste…

Hi, I am Jeremy Mcdonell and I am going through some tough times with a relationship I'm in. This particular rut I'm in has made me think, what really occurs to the human mind in romantic love? I know that romantic love is basically the human body's version of a mammalian mating motive, but it seems like its a whole lot more than that, because of the combination of so many emotions at once. What is romantic love really?

I think I tend to fit the absent minded professor stereotype. Its weird because honestly I feel i fit the stereotypes altho not the professor part. Lol. I spend a lot of my time engrossed in thought and yet I am clumbsy, fair poorly socially, bad with spelling, disorganized, have trouble with details that don't seem important to me but do to others etc Is this a "thing"? Anyone else feel like this too? In what way? How do you deal? Typically I've felt bad about myself for being this way and I try to fight it. More recently I've started to try and embrace who I am and just roll with it! I feel like embracing my intelligence and my clumsiness and disorganized …

BOTTOMING-OUT Part 1: In 1936, the Guatemalan poet and art critic Cardoza y Aragón, in self-imposed exile in Mexico City, met the also exiled French poet and dramatist Antonin Artaud. The image that Cardoza holds of the European traveler is definitive: "Antonin Artaud is just like 'El Desdichado,' 'The Wretched,' his brother Nerval." Cardoza adds, "The widower, the disconsolate, prince of Aquitania of the forbidden tower. The shadowy one, whose only star is dead and whose star-spangled lute bears the black sun of melancholy." Earlier, he would observe: "He came to Mexico in search of hope. Expelled from all parts, he lived bleeding, he lived atrociously, head in …
