My link This asteroid called apophis was discovered in 2004, predicted to be really closed to earth in 2036 (s*#t i'm just 46 at that time) but no harm was calculated by scientist. But, i want to talk for a worst thing that could be happen. As engineers or scientist, what the best solution you think to stop that asteroid from hitting earth.. shoot it or ask to Ultramen for help?

Seriously, I would say that thing was a kind of missile if i don't know it was actually a military jet. I've heard that it was the fastest jet nowadays which could fly at mach 6. But what if to compare with that Aurora which are said to be a US top secret military project.

I recently descovered a materal apparently called clinker. It's a deep purple color, a little reflective and has the apperance of ceramic, stone\brick and metal. It is irregular yet smooth and reminds me of expensive underused materals such as marble. It is however apparently free and considered always to be just a waste product.

  5. Hi: I thinking of a radiant cooling device for houses and buildings in which the cooling -- in the direct sense -- involves only radiation. Sort of like a glass-ceramic radiant-stove-top in reverse. Indirectly, however, some amount of convection and conduction will be needed [liquid helium, cold metals]. The cooling panel is the ceiling and cools objects below it. Quote from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glass-ceramic : "A glass-ceramic stove uses radiant heating coils as the heating elements. The surface of the glass-ceramic cooktop above the burner heats up, but the adjacent surface remains cool because of the low heat conduction coefficient of the material."…

traditionally the difference between 1 and 0 is represented by a change in voltage. but is it worth it to represent them with a difference in frequency? does anyone know where i can read about that? would it be more beneficial since you could have extra states? low frequency, a mid range and a high? similar to ternary but would it be easier with changing frequencies as opposed to different voltages? and perhaps even more states. i assume i'm not the first person to wonder this so can anyone point me in the direction where i can learn more about it?

we all know current is flow of electrons in the conductor........in generation of power the emf induced in the conductor causes current once the valance electrons are removed from their respective orbits(ie the flow of current) how the electrons are retained in their atoms...if someone has any answer please tell me..

Hey everyone, I'm a student studying in sciences getting ready to apply to University in a few months. I'm looking mostly at Engineering programs and was wondering what you think are the most needed types of engineers in our world today and why? Just curious. I'm debating more between Electrical and Aerospace but I'm open to discussion.

Hi. A solar water heating panel on a roof gets its water supply from a pipe and outputs on another pipe. cold water pipe --->==============================solar hot water pipe <---==============================panel What changes in performance/efficiency if -only the hot output pipe is insulated, or if -both pipes are fit together inside the same insulation sleeve ? (The inlet water is at ambient temperature)

  11. I did a quick SFN search and was surprised to find no results returned for 'Moon Water!' Well as was publicized back in November NASA believes they have discovered signs of water on the Moon! \o/ This took me down the pretty obvious Rabbit Hole I call 'space exploration.' What could water on the Moon mean for space exploration? No it doesn't mean we will have something to drink while we are up there.... What do I feel I would like to exploit about the existence of water on the Moon??? Well! I think if it is discovered that there are significant amounts of water on the Moon/1 that we must most definitely tap into this resource as a viable means of energy storage a…

  12. I recently discovered Philo Farnsworth's "fusor" reactor design, which uses inertial electrostatic confinement to produce fusion reactions for up to 30 seconds at a time. I have a moderate (electrical) engineering background and have done lots of simple projects, but building a "fusor" sounds somewhat... involved. However, I'd like to build one. Can people suggest more intermediate skill projects that use similar concepts to the fusor which I could do in order to develop the requisite background to construct a fusor? I am thinking various devices based around vacuum chambers or related to creating confined plasmas. I have a friend who has the requisite equip…

I'm looking for good designs for power generation for a rural community in Africa. I've seen see-saw designs and a bicycle design. Using the bicycle to inductively transfer power between the back wheel (primary coil), and two secondary coils on either side of it. Then to convert this into DC and supply lights etc. Therefore you would use people to actually peddle to the meddle to energise lights. Any other designs/ideas? Comments about this idea i mentioned above? - Jaxx

Hi This is a powerful rotary internal combustion engine. When rotor round one time, engine work six times. My mechanical design aim was to create a power for UAV,MAV, robotics, mini-generators; engine size is very small, can be forged or EDM etching method of mass production. Because the rotor around its axis, uniform rotation, so it can reach a very high speed, high power. Hi I've had an idea for a self-powered turbine but I know about as much about engineering as I do about putting on make-up. Here's the idea and if anyone can tell me if it's the greatest invention since the knife and fork - genius, but I still have trouble eating soup - or the crazed machinations of an intellectual ameeba (I don't think I've spelled that right) I would be very grateful. We have a large central rotating column, attached to which are 8 arms reaching out. On the end of each arm is a circular frame. Each circular frame has a large fan in the centre with 8 smaller fans spread equally around the circumference. The central column is given…

  21. Hi science community, I am attempting to calculate the efficiency of an oil cooler that takes the form of a counterflow shell and tube heat exchanger. In the shell is the oil which is being cooled from around 70*C to 40*C In the tubes is pure Ammonia (R-717 refrigerant) which enters as a liquid and leaves as a gas. I am very confused by the phase-change in the Ammonia.. do I use the heat of vaporization to find the Heat generation (Q_dot). (With this equation: Q_dot = m_dot * h_fg)? I have been attempting to use this formula to find the efficiency: Q_dot = e * C_min * (T_hot_in - T_cold_in) with e being the efficiency. Am I on the right tra…

Hi everyone. I have a question regarding hybrid cars. The average hybrid car consists of an electric and petrol motor with a large and heavy battery pack. Usually, the petrol and electric motors run separately, with the electric motor running when light power is required and the petrol motor cutting in when extra power is needed. Of course, the battery requires external charging from a mains socket. I was thinking why you couldn't have a hybrid with a petrol engine that runs continuosly, not connected to the transmission but only recharging the battery? My rationale for this is that you wouldn't need a large battery pack requiring about 6-8 hrs of runninig ti…

  25. Hello, I am new to these forums and really hope there is someone out there who can help me. I am working on a project where we are mixing BaCl2 (actually BaCl2*2H2O) with river water. The river water contains an extremely high concentration of sulfate (around 5000 ppm) and we want to reduce it to around 10 ppm or less. So we are mixing it with barium chloride (after baking the BaCl2 for 48 hours at 200 degrees C to remove the dihydrate) in a 55 gallon drum to form barium sulphate precipitate which eventually settles out of solution. The total volume of water is around 130 liters and we are using a 1350 RPM motor with a 3.5" diameter standard propeller. We have …
