Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology

Discussion of Darwin's theories, modes of natural selection, life form structures, and life off Earth

  1. Does anyone truly believe that goo can turn into an organism? It's never been reprodced, and it sounds impossible.

ABCD of Earth Life April-June 2001, w/touch-up mid 2003 A. Pre-cell Life ? A most profound and stirring lesson of published genomes is, for some strange reason, not mentioned nor discussed. This lesson is the realization that reconstruction of biology has been due ever since biologists adopted the appearance of cellular life on Earth as the Big Bang of Life. Genomes, all genomes, make most sense if celled life evolved from pre-celled life which, by our present knowledge, might have been based on individual archaic genes that evolved and speciated into more elaborate genes, some of whom entered into symbiotic associations, some associations then celled themse…

  3. Recently I read “Race, Evolution and Behavior” by J. Philippe Rushton, 3rd Ed., see http://www.ssc.uwo.ca/psychology/faculty/rushton.html and http://www.harbornet.com/folks/theedrich/JP_Rushton/Race.htm In addition, I decided that there were some interesting ideas I would like to expose readers here to, as well as discuss. In chapter 10 of this book, he goes into what evolutionary biologists call life history theory. This theory is a way that biologists theorize what sort of adaptations different species, or sub-species as in races, make to adapt to various environmental stimuli. In his book, he details how the three major racial groups have various genotypic,…

Ever wondered why you don't feel comfortable looking at bad wounds? Or why girls usually are more uncomfortable with it? It's because of evolution. So instead of evolving our imune system, we just kept away from the disease. Guess it is easier that way.

setting aside the usually omitted fact that i don't believe in evolution (in the degree accepted by science) here begins an endless question: What ideas do you have of evolution paths of other worlds? What would be the factors to it (different combinations of minerals abundant beside water)? Would they develop Bacteria, protista, how could they be different? Maybe even something as simple as DNA would exist (be developed) in a completely different system, possibly changing the form of life in a way we cannot comprehend. Contemplating the possibilities could be impossibly abstract in comparison to common thought born out of interaction with our own enviroment. Prob…

(I wasn't sure if this topic should go here or in the news forum. Feel free to move it if necessary.) According to a paleontologist from Princeton, the asteriod that fell in the Yucatan and is commonly believed to have killed the dinosaurs may not have been the chief cause of their extinction. Studies of rock formations in the area suggest that the asteriod fell about 300,000 years after the dinosaurs became extinct and that the crater is smaller than originally thought. Microfossils also suggest that the many organisms were already endangered before the asteriod fell, and the asteriod may have been the "final straw." Here's the link to the complete article: http:…

I personally think that we humans did not evolve from monkeys (gorillas, whichever it was lol) but that they evolved from us. Gorillas (I'm assuming that was the one now) do not go around killing each other, and don't destroy their environment. Not only that, but they didn't contribute to the Greenhouse Effect or anything else we've done. They haven't developed WMD. They can grab things both with their hands AND their feet! (Obvious plus there!) And, of course, they can never turn down a perfectly good banana :banana::banana: Yes, this is mainly a joke. But there is SOME sense to it (cough :bs: cough) Yes, yes, very very :lame: …

Okay, I've always wondered.... 1. Why have large animals (like all them Super-sized dino's) all given way to smaller ones. 2. How could animals of this size have supported themselves against both the weight and in terms of getting enough calories --heck, they'd have to eat all day and night. It may sound stupid (I've been called worse) but I always wondered if gravity has not been constant thru the earth's history. Didn't they say that they found evidence of water being deposited on earth on a daily basis from space (I think they mentioned cometary debris). What if, over the millions of years, earth has been bombarded with water that has increased the gravita…

What do think how big meaning it's for developing the life on Earth, that gravity is just 1 G. Small differences would surely have been disadvantage to developing of life, but what would be the appearance of creatures on the planets with f.ex. 0.5 G or 2 G.

What do you think if human now would extinct, what influence it would have Earth's flora and fauna. In particular, how big possibilities would the apes have to reproduce and disperse on the our planet. Which ape would have the best possibilities: chimpanzee, gorilla or perhaps orang. Would the disappearance of human to accelerate evolution of apes' intelligence.

I have one thing to say, let's say you walk into a room, and you see a chair sitting there. Now evolutioist or creationist you know that chair didn't just create it's self right? Right. Well then how can something as simple as a chair not just have a BOOM or BANG or lightning and make the chair. That's not possible. Yet people belive that in a "Big BANG" Theroy were the whole universe just made it's self. So ... explain that. Plus evolution ... explain how people evolve the human eye? You do that, and then maybe I'll think about chaning my views on Evolution. Sure I belvie in Surviale of the fittest, but that's totaly different. I mean I don't mean any dis…

When I say intellgent aliens I am talking about a mind that equals humans. Basically a species that is like us with technology would have to look like us. I think the human design is perfect not only for primitive lifestyle but also an advanced one. Basically, the only way a species is able to get to where we are today is: - Warm blooded. The body needs internal heat to power a huge brain. So mammals and birds are the only animals that can have a big brain. - Hands built like ours with thumbs are the greatest body part for building tools and manipulating thier environment. Mammals only have these (I think some dinosaurs did to). - Excellent eyesight. …

Here I want to discuss how mammals evolved. I have always thought that a reptile was forced to hunt at night to avoid predators. Over time its body adjusted and it evolved internal heat known as warm blood. But I am confused about how mammals evolved to grow their offspring inside thier bodies. Maybe one species left its eggs in its body to keep it warm. Over time the egg evolved into a placenta. Any more ideas of mammal evolution.

Its about right time to stir up some controversy Alright, given that convergent evolution happened, what mechanisms put restraints on convergence? I understand that different environments play a role; I don't need fins. Likewise, a fish wouldn't have much use for my legs. I'm asking what puts constraits on organisms that live in the same environment as one another. Someone mentioned whales (previously land mammals) developing fins, much like fish. What kept the whales from developing gills, eliminating the need to surface? Why do we have larger brains? I'm sure all of us would agree that larger brains is advantageous; why doesn't my dog have a larger brain?

How advanced do you think you are compared to a caveman? Do you think of yourself as a far improved version of a caveman? Let me throw something at you. We work as a hive of information. This hive of information, could be compared to the strength of ants when they work in groups. Can each of us as individuals build a TV set? Engineer a car? Manufacture a computer, or have the knowledge of how to do such things from birth.... Imagine that you have been born into a group of cavemen. You have the same brain as you have now. Would the cavemen notice a difference between you, and them? Would you do things that would greatly impress them? Or are we actually just Cavem…

If someone was brought up in pure darkness with only LED lights like the jammer light, would they eventualy adapt and see with it. I without any training, can already see a little bit as can others I`ve tried it with (some cannot for some reason?). would our eyes take this little bit of light and extend further towards the brighter IR part in order to see? The SETI group now feels that life on Earth may have started when passing comet seeded our planet with life giving microbes. Fred Adams in his book Origins of Existence says that life began underneath the Earth. I mean how else could live exist on a planet being bombarded with space debris. Classical evolutionists point to the see and say Cradle of Life. Theists point to the ultimate underlying power and say...God. (For you math buffs that would be God = unknown Variable.) So when and how did life first begin on mother life. Did our beginnings rise on Earth on or off and briefly...how?

  24. The machine (of which name i do not know and didn't think to ask, and now the one who knows is gone) has to do with a concept i will ask about in a second. So my physics teacher last year (who this year has taken a leave(why or where to no one knows)) showed us this machine, its a box with a rod sticking out of it. You turn on the machine and the rod goes up and down (like a piston i guess) there is a dial to turn up the frequency. An aluminum sheet attaches to the the rod. At high frequencies (that i swore i could feel vibrating my guts and was afraid one of my organs would explode) sand is poured on the sheet and it shifts to fit wave paterns (exactly how it works i don…
