This isn't really about earth - but not sure where else the thread should go. Jupiter has lost a coloured band in its southern hemisphere... thought people might find this interesting. Wonder what it means!?

FS/Trade: Extremely Rare High-Thorian Uraninite in Serpentine Rock from Easton, Pennsylvania. This material was mined from the C. K. Williams quarry of Easton, PA. It ranges from 800-850 million years old and is a highly- metamorphic rock. Grains of High-Thorian Uraninite make this ore the only Primary deposite of Uranium in the State of Pennsylvania. This deposite was first found in the 1930’s, and was studied until the early 1960’s. This is a very rare mineral, never seen for sale. You can read more about this mineral here (written in 1957) - http://www.minsocam.org/ammin/AM42/AM42_804.pdf This ore ranges from 300 CPM- 5,000 CPM (Beta/Gamma).Guara…

I was wondering how exactly an atmosphere forms. I was looking around and to me it sounded like it's just gas pulled in by gravity. Also is the Moon's gravitational pull large enough to keep it's own atmosphere?

Is it possible for the earth to reverse its polarisation in relation to magnetic poles, so that the negative becomes the positive and vice versa? Assuming this were possible, what becomes of all electrical devices does it affect anything? What sort of effect would a polar reversal have?

There was show that was saying with out the moon or with out the earth that rotates all life on earth is gone. What causes the earth to rotate. Billions of years ago, the formation of the earth from dust and gas coming together caused it to spin.Than large rock hit the earth making it spin quite fast. This also formed our moon. There is a very slight wandering of the rotation poles. It is due to tugs from other bodies in the solar system, continental drift, and earthquakes. Also the moon. What factor does moon have on earth and if the moon was gone what will happen? moon exerts a very strong gravitational pull on the earth. Although it has sever…

Hi all, I'm new here and hope this question is posted on the correct forum. Can somebody explain to me why spring tides occur at full moon? I realise that at new moon the sun and moon are pulling in the same direction and thus cause a spring tide, but at full moon the two gravitational forces are directly opposed, and should affect one another negatively. I'm not a scientist, so would appreciate the explanation in layman's language. Many thanks. Leonard.

Hi, I'm trying to do research on techniques that can be used to identify the tree source of wood and charcoal. I'm looking for references from scientific journals to start. Found one using x-ray diffraction methods. I will appreciate if anyone can send links to papers even abstracts that focus on this topic better yet focus on using the x-ray diffraction for this purpose. Thanks in advance!

I am looking for information concerning CO2 conversion rates of plants, specifically small plants, fungi, etc. All I can find are statements that a mature tree can convert about 50 lbs. of CO2 a year, but this really doesn’t help me. Can anyone answer any of the following: 1. What small plants convert CO2 the fastest? 2. Is there some basic formula or rule that can be applied to find out how much CO2 a plant converts? 3. If you don’t know this off-hand, do you know where I can find this information? Thanks

Okay this might sound stupid, but I am really unable to figure this one out. What I know: Water dissipates, condenses again in the atmosphere, creates clouds, which will condense more and create rain. volume of rain=volume of dissipated water. Question: Since more water dissipates in the summer(heat and all) than in the winter, why doesn't it rain more in the summer? The sky is always filled with clouds in the winter, but there are barely any clouds in the summer... I'm sure the answer is pretty simple, and I'm just clueless. Thanks in advance, Agony

I stared thinking what would really happen if the polar ice caps really melted away - Everyone all ways focuses on the effects of the rising seas - But I started thinking - what other effects could happen If water weighs 62 lbs a cubic foot - so when you start displacing billions upon billions of metric tons around - Shit is going to happen - My guess is the pressure released from the polar caps will cause frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions I believe a continental plate could crack under all that stress - when it has to realign itself to match for the new external gravitational pressures So my question is - Do ice caps have a force in moving the pl…

Have you ever seen the movie "True Lies" with Arnold Schwarzenegger? If you have, you might know why Im posting this thread, if you havent, heres why. In the movie, Mars is now inhabited by colonists from Earth and they live in oxygen supplied domes. Seems reasonable enough for a sci-fi flick. Then movie basically states that all of Mars's core is a giant glacier that, once undergoing sublimation caused by an alien reactor, will release so much oxygen and life-sustaining gasses that Mars will have an atmosphere suitable for human life. WTF?! This was more than far-fetched to me. I thought that if a planets glacial core went through sublimation…

I am trying to do some research but the problem is that I am so ignorant about science beyond the high school level that I don't even know where to start. Here is my question. What exactly is thermo-gravimetric analysis? What types of instruments are used to conduct it? At which colleges could I find experts in that type of analysis? I am also looking to find out if there is a scientist named, "Hal Puthoff" who might work at Institute for Advanced Studies at Austin in Austin, Texas. He may have published an article called ""Gravity as a zero-point-fluctuation force" in March 1, 1989 issue of Physical Review Any information would be gr…

Since I am in 5th grade we are learning about plate tectonics but I already know about plate tectonics.Like they are plates that make up the earth and they make the continents move and move into different shapes. They also cause earthquakes like everybody knows that but I don't live in an earthquake zone so I have never actually been in an earthquake y'all. But if you do live in an earthquake zone you should be prepared one could happen when you are done reading this message.

Hello to all, this is my first post Yesterday (3/20/10) was the solstice, which gives us equal parts light and dark, thus marking the beginning of spring in the northern hemisphere. When however I went to view an annual chart for my location (Portland, Oregon), the sunrise was listed at 7:14AM and sunset at 7:23PM. This chart lists march 17th as having a sunrise and sunset at 7:19 AM and PM... So why the discrepancy? Also, While looking for an answer to the question above, I found many references to the earth having a tilted axis. And while there is an abundance of information about the effects of this tilt on our environment, there is no information about…
