What do you think about an open system and a closed system a.k.a. a PC and a Console, and which would you prefer to develop on? I personally think that closed system would be best as there would be no compatibility issues and since the OS footprint is so small as compared to a PC so all resources can be dedicated to the application ie game. And due to the nature of a closed system, better looking game (graphics, textures, AA, effects) can be made as compared to games on PC that have a higher system requirement.

Does anyone here have SP2? Windows Automatic Update downloaded it, but I don't want to install it since I hear all of these stories about how it will stop programs from working and all of that. So if you have it, what did it do?

I know that there are many researches about it but I just wanted to know your opinions. Technology is our everything (cellphones, computers, programmes,, etc.) anyways it's making us lazy and insensitive? If there was a 'dependence test' , how could be its questions ??

Hello everyone, I need to write a research paper and choose an important issue (preferably related to the world of technology and computers) with controversy surrounding it. I would have to be able to find a variety of credible sources (explaining the issue, range of opinions, etc.) to support my paper. Any ideas anyone? Regards, Cheshire Cat

  5. I want to clarify my simple understanding about the role of ALU. There are two components; 1- Arithmatic Unit. 2- Logic Unit. The role of arithmatic unit is simply to do arithmatic operations on numbers. These numbers come from written program instructions. The role of Logic Unit is to derive logical conclusion. It performs comparisons to decide about equal, greater or less values etc. The thing I want to clarify is that logic unit derives logical conclusions. Just like in ordinary deductive logic, there are two premises and the conclusion is drawn from the information contained in premises. My question is that is computer also derive deductive conclu…

I'm having a difficult time understanding LC-3 instructions and registers. Can someone help me with these few problems, maybe explain them step by step. Thanks! 1) What is the difference between the following LC-3 instructions A and B? How are they similar and how are they different? A: 0000111101010101 B: 0100111101010101 2) The LC-3 does not have an opcode for the logical function OR. That is, there is no instruction in the LC-3 ISA that performs the OR operation. However, we can write a sequence of instructions to implement the OR operation. THe four instruction sequence below performs the OR of the contents of register 1 and register 2 and puts…

  8. This question occurred to me some time ago when I was thinking about whether or not `if` statements are fundamental in computation. Consider a program that manages a single bank account (for the sake of simplicity). The bank account could be defined as something like Account { int balance; // current amount of Money boolean withdraw(int n) { if (balance >= n) { balance = balance -n; return true; } else return false; } void deposit(int n) { amount = amount + n; } } S…

  11. It is the first time I try to participate in a forum cause I am in great need...! I have to deliver an exercise till Tuesday and I don't think I am going to make it...so I need your help. We have been given a task to create the game "Battleship" using DevC++,without creating or downloading any great libraries. (The game will be played in one computer for each team but vs players that run the same programm in their own computer). This is how it should be: *The programma should read a notepad(where there should be the ships that we use in form of a table with 10 columns and 10 lines-->file "Navy"). *Then it should ask the developer if he is taking the shot…

Please note: the title is a joke. Click here if you don't get it Shadow asked a number of questions about why I don't like C++ and don't think new programmers should learn it. That said, I do think there are cases where C++ is useful, and depending on what you want to program it might be a good choice. So hopefully we can get into a little about that here instead of disturbing yourdad's thread. There's a few reasons: 1) Many companies are heavily invested in C++ with massive legacy codebases. Transitioning to another language is too costly. 2) C++ remains a great language for developing the core functionality of applications which you intend to…

  15. I've got a report function in our local training system, where we enter the manager ID of a group, then the course code. This will pull who in that managers group has completed that course code and who has not. I'm trying to find a way to replace putting a (or multiple) specific course code (or codes) with a "begins with" logic that will pull all course codes beginning with a certain term. However, I've messed around a bit with wildcards (like * and %), but either the wildcards don't work, or my syntax is wrong. An example of an actual report url for a specific manager and a specific course is as follows: http: //OurTrainingSite/reports/mgr_drill_mu…

  17. Hi I guess this is a question about image analysis. I'm looking for an automated method of counting the number of bats in pictures, like the one below. I don't have a background in CS, so preferably I need something that doesn't require any programming. Please let me know if there exists anything that fits this purpose. Thanks in advance. FYI this is for my senior project. I'm studying how Mexican free-tailed bats synchronize their emergence. For instance, how does their echolocation intensity correlate with this group behavior. (Maybe someone will be interested in this)

One of my computers have been infected with a virus or worm that got past Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition, and ZoneAlarm Pro. In fact, the virus has disabled my ZoneAlarm Pro firewall, and I'm trying to figure out how to fix it. The virus automatically downloaded itself into my computer from a web site. It only took a few seconds to download, so I didn't have time to press the Cancel button. While it was downloading, I saw the following window: Then a file named 0.exe was on my hard drive. Before ZoneAlarm Pro was disabled, it warned me that 0.exe was trying to act like a server. It also warned me that 0.exe was attempting to send e-mail messages. …

I have had my Hotmail account for about 4 years, and there have been two times where messages that I have deleted appeared in my Inbox. These were messages that I had deleted months ago, and removed from the trash can. However, they just came back into my Inbox. I was sure that Microsoft was secretly keeping deleted messages on their server. I e-mailed Microsoft, and they promised that they did not keep any deleted messages. They claimed that once a message was deleted from the trash can, it was gone forever. I didn't really believe this, and I was still sure that there was a hidden place in my Hotmail account that contained deleted messages. Now, I think I h…

'Artificial general intelligence (AGI) .. [or strong AI] is the intelligence of a machine that can understand or learn any intellectual task that a human being can.' (Wikipedia) Is there any evidence for such a system? I have done a good year of research and published on the matter, and up to now I have not read about such a system. Furthermore, predictions of strong AI soon to come have been given by reputable scientist like Marvin Minsky several times - and failed. For the time being, Strong AI looks like Speculation to me. But maybe I have a blind spot, are lack of access to the latest developements. Enlightenment please.

I have read quite a bit about quantum physics, conciousness (including quantum conciousness), relativity, the double slit experiment, schrodingers cat, the planck constant, dark matter etc etc etc You must have heard about the idea that we could be living in a computer simulation, (see the paper by Nick Bostrum).. Is there a way a sim could prove that s/he is indeed a sim and not 'real'? Is the planck constant the pixel size of our host computer's capability?

  23. Question 1 How many different minimum cuts are there in a tree with n nodes (ie. n−1 edges) ? n n2 n−1 2n−2 Question 2 Let "output" denote the cut output by Karger's min cut algorithm on a given connected graph with n vertices, and let p=1n2. Which of the following statements are true? For hints on this question, you might want to watch the short optional video on "Counting Minimum Cuts". For every graph G with n nodes, there exists a min cut (A,B) of G such that Pr[out=(A,B)]≥p. For every graph G with n nodes, there exists a min cut (A,B) such that Pr[out=(A,B)]≤p. There exists a graph G with n node…

  24. Hi all, I am just revising my computer skills after a 30 year break. The question on my mind is what are the fundamentals building blocks of computing? From my revision I have learnt that there are four basic logic gates AND OR XOR and NOT - from these all other logic gates can be built. Then of course there is binary. the conditional statement IF - THEN is currently puzzling me how is this constructed from the above operations? It seems to me that it cannot be?

I have often heard that your computer is only as fast as your slowest part what would I need to overclock this processor to, to balance this video card. It has a water-cooler 280mm water-cooler so I don't think temperature will be a issue, but I want them to balance. Processor Video Card Because currently I clock this processor to 4.0 ghz. Current Processor to balance. Current Video Card Which I know is off by 1% , that is due to overheating above that with a standard fan cooler which sits at Min 44 C to Max 87 C which is say below 100 C to 150 C where it melts but I always go below 99 C to be safe which I have been told be be OC'd t…
