The last train derrailment was not that bad...

Featured Replies

Could be much worse next time... 🙄

May be an image of train and railroad

Seems like this one should have gone in the "Jokes" section.

No Joke.
Did you read about the derailment in New Palestine, Ohio ?

I work in the chemical industry, with Phosphorus and Phosphine, on a daily basis, but that one rattled wven my nerves.

Kind of scary that vinyl chloride, when it combusts, releases phosgene as one breakdown product.  A gas that was used in trench warfare.

To the OP, missiles wouldn’t ship with warheads already installed, especially not without better bracing than that shown here. Those are metal tubes with fins welded in that look neat. No rocketry or armaments.

Missiles or rockets or whatever they are, hope are not armed.  Scary stuff.  Phiu !

Well, hope the warheads are not in another wagon... or in another train ! 😲

My understanding is that missile aboard aircraft carriers aren't armed until a mission is assigned and the missiles are about to be attached to the jets. I cannot imagine armed, fueled rockets being transported by train in open cars. That picture seems like some kind of joke.

If there's one word that sends chills down a chemical engineer's spine it is BLEVE (and it needs to!).

Post script: LPG is often stored in elongated cylinders informally referred to as 'bullets'. A common 'good design practice' is to avoid aligning them with the long axis pointing towards any habitation within 3 kms.

chilling detail

Turns out the problem that led to the New Palestine derailment, and subsequent burning of Vinyl Chloride, Di-isobutylene, etc., coould have been avoided had reccomendations from previous derailments been implemented; brakes on every axle of the cars.
But the rail industry lobbied heavily the previous orange haired President, who waived the reccomendations.
Just another of D Trump's wonderful legacies.
