Then you said: This looks like a change of deffinition mid argument to me. Which shows you're arguments however poor they may be to start with are showing even more cracks...

no that may be a well packaged desktop operating system package, but the deffinision of an OS hasn't changed. Windows does not include or come with or install with "advanced word processors" or a good "picture editor", so Windows XP by your own deffinition is NOT a good OS, ubuntu to take one DOES come with all of that so by your deffinition (which is flawed) is a GOOD OS.

You seem quite impressed with this. Linux's windows manager and GUI's have done this for years, as well as proper transparancies.

In my experiance hardware and software are more compatiple with linux than windows XP. After installing several distros on linux on different ages of machines from modern ones to pIII's Linux has had better hardware and software support everytime.
  5. It's much better than the old one

This may sound silly, but are you looking for the share in the right place on the computer where you want to download the files?

An interesting thing is that Samba is offten found to be faster under testing than microsofts implementaion of their own protocole.
  9. My name because I needed a name for an online game about 5 years ago and thought it up on the fly and it's just stuck. My avitar because I was bored and needed a small image the other day and made this one in about 5 mins, then though "oh I know could use that as an avitar on sfn" as if anyone cares I've never had an avitar on forums dispite having used them for YEARS...
  10. In PCWorld the other day (don't ask why I was in there it's a long and quite dull story and involves kettle leads) I saw a 120GB WD drive, not a perticually good one if memory serves, for a mighty £175! more than double the price of my 200GB I feel for people who shop in there I really do And when I got my newest disk there was only about £10 beween the 160GB version and the 200GB version, easily alot better value for money

I used to have fun with a windows 2k, and windows me network, the 2k computer controled the network effectively, but occationally winMe would decide that it liked the idea of controling the network, at this point 2k would go "nope" and the whole thing would fall the pieces :S deeply annoying. Never did find the problem

One of the significant advantages with Linux over windows is that on a windows system every file on your file system is executable as a program, so you download something and it can be run as a program by a milliciouse script without you knowing, on Linux by default only things which need to be executable are executable and everything else isn't unless you specifically tell it to be.

From your comments I guess that those mac's where probably running macos 8 or 9, which was attrociouse, from personal experiance they crash all the time and don't seem to be able to handle simple tasks. But saying that macosX is one of the most stable and fastest os's avaliable, and guess what it's bassed on BSD. The powerpc (the processor inside most mac's) is an EXCELLENT processor. Shame they are so damn expencive
  15. identicle: interchangeable fermion: A particle, such as an electron, proton, or neutron, having half-integral spin (do you consider half-integral as maths?) quantum state: anypossible state a quantum mechanical system can be in, designated by a complete set of quantum numbers. I supose it depends on your deffinition of maths, is "I have 2 apples" maths?
  16. It's been used as a very informal form of "good bye", and thank you for as long as I can remember. I occationally use it, and very occationally at the bottom of posts.

A quick google for "linux on a floppy" gave me a host of links, including: http://www.toms.net/rb/ http://www.antlinux.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php?n=AntLinux.HomePage Not sure whether either will work or how good they are though. I'm just wondering, couldn't you use mono on Linux to do your .net development Pangloss? And my opinion of ASP is less than good anyway :s
  18. as words... Pauli exclusion principle for example is easiest expressed as words, which states that no two identical fermions may occupy the same quantum state.
  19. That is deeply deeply weird...

I'd just like to say that Linux isn't inpregneble by any means, and if you don't keep things up to date and are connected directly to the interenet and you have listening ports (sshd, httpd etc...) then you will probably have a compromised system within a short while depending how much activity your IP range gets (unlike the windows XP sp2 install which I belive averages 12 mins)
  21. Am I the only one who the IRC pdf doesn't work for?
  22. Energy and matter obay rules, science is the development and discovery of these rules. So it is not intelligence it is just following rules... If what I've said makes any sence to anyone I'd like to know because I'm quire sure I'm talking rubbish like normal :s
  23. I have to agree with Mokele if the millitary could do it 2 decades ago with all the development which is being done into them now someone would have made a breakthrough by now.
