You'll probably want the single iso for your processor type.

To follow on from Aet: around 70% of webservers run on linux/bsd bassed systems. And Aet: I think something like ubuntu is very close if not there for being ready for the masses, all it needs is a good hand book (although the online docs are good people like my parents like some paper) and possibly a shiny pretty installer. Esspecially if it is being shiped with prebuilt systems where the hardware can be thourally checheckd for compatibility issues (which also has to be done with Windows XP machines - remember SP2 killing everything including ms developed software?) it would be fine.

Actually MS got the #1 spot by clinching a deal about DOS (which they bought and did not start development on) with IBM, then their windows power base built up from this. Not because it did alot more, it was just easy for people to go dos - win95.

It's legacy compatibility to show that IE is roughly compatible with netscape (from the days when netscape was considered the best browser above IE...)

It only comes with every windows pc, (and perhaps mac? not sure if they ship with it as standard) What if I want to use a linux specific program on windows? Oh dear I can't surely that means everyone should use linux? OK let me make something clear here, IE is NOT the html, xml, css standard, these standards are governed by an independent organisation called the world wide web consortium, have a look at w3c.org. Just because many people use something doesn't mean it's better than the rivals. And just out of interst what os does your websever use? Oh yeah and IE is LOSEING market share every day, mostly to firefox.

I'm pretty sure that VB used to let users change the date format, can't find it now, oh well... has the last starwars film been released to cinimas yet? I cannot remember these things...
  16. http://www.scintilla.org/SciTE.html scite, an AMAZING text editor, if you look around their site you can find out how to turn on tabed browsing (not done by default which is rather annoying) from their online documentation My points where ment to be best to start how you mean to go on :s but I fully accept Icheb's points.

I remember the days when IE was by far the best browser around and I feel it is a great shame it has lost it's way and from what I hear from people who have used ie 7's current release (beta or alpha I cannot remember) it is not going to be much better
  18. notepad good if I where you I'd look for a html - css tutorial because css is GREAT! For example you shouldn't use the <font> tag anymore but use css to change font settings etc... My one comment is that it is good practice to always include a doctype: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> Is the one from this page, yours would be differnt from this as this is an XHTML one, if you google for html doctypes you'll probably be able to find some help on it

You have show your ignorance by saying 6.x isn't a valid version number as it means all versions of IE version 6. The subsiquent numbers are related to patches and later releases of the same version, they cover the security patches further down the page with a "security issue: patched/unpatched" section. The windows Kernel is about as simplistic as the linux one, if you can call it simplistitc. Lots of Linux systems DO have compatibillity issues, which is why you use a managed distribution like ubuntu and you use a program such as apt which automatticaly resovels compatibility issues and dependencies, but just like windows this doesn't always work. Firstly people like what is familiar to them, i.e. windows, secondly ms has untill recently and I belive still do offer significant financial advantages if you only sell windows pc's (to the OEM's this is). AOL have changed their base browser several times (they even bought out netscape but continued to use IE) Compatibility issues might just be due to setup, I am unsure though...

I'd just like to say I didn't mean to come over all fan boyish, and I duel boot with XP for my own needs, I just wanted to rebuff herme3's comments about linux. MS themselves do do lots of good stuff, they fund lots of research alot of which they do not keep to themselves but publish for all to read. Competition is always a good thing and I hope ms produce some excellent os's in the future. As for the advantage of the open sourceness of linux, then I'd say the big advantage is anyone can release their own version, so there is a version of linux designed for nearly anyones needs (even ones for games using some interesting windows emulators who's names currently escape me based on wine). There are linux's like tinylinux, which requires 50MB of hard disk space, to enterprise systems designed for running large servers, and for clustering pc's into acting like a mainframe.
