  1. Leave a gun for someone else to kill or lose your shit and kill, the result is the same.
  2. You seem to be conflating the meaning of life and free will, they are two different questions. Our apparent free will is informed in many ways that are beyond our control, culture and genetic makeup for instance. whereas it's perfectly possible to give one's life meaning despite free will. That occurred to me, I guess we'll find out with the subsequent replies.
  3. That. Kinda the point of an analogy, a little meaning. Can you show an instance, in this context, where meaning is literal?
  4. There's always the odd-ball and long may it remain
  5. Ok let's go with that analogy, what car would you/most people choose if given carte blanche?
  6. Not today but who knows what tomorrow may bring. No, it's a very real potential outcome.
  7. Well, that's a different question.
  8. But one that seems doomed to fail.
  9. And that's why I don't think it's hype. The more we reduce genetic diversity the closer we get to a smallpox virus. At this moment in time, there seems little reason to worry because only the rich can take advantage of the potential; but when did wealth shield one from flu or rats? Edit, I'm not suggesting we stop exploring the medical benefits, but the title suggests this thread has little to do with that.
  10. The semantics aside, "designer babies" for anything other than medical reasons is a slippery slope, and not in a fallacious way. It has the potential to wipe out the human race, genetic diversity is essential for a healthy populace. After all, when have any of our attempts to control the real world ever been successful? And before you point to smallpox and similar, that is a way to simple/binary a problem, just add evolution/genetic diversity and the simple problem of rats/flu is seemingly unsolvable.
  11. In the west, it's ethics committees, elsewhere no doubt 'super soldier' will hop off the pages of comics at some point.
  12. So am I and so do I "there's nothing noble about being superior to your fellow man. True Nobility lies in being superior to your formal self" - Earnest Hemmingway
  13. Never be sad to learn something... It's only stupid when you won't.
  14. What, more people safe? Or: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brave_New_World
  15. I suspect Newton maybe... but never that...
  16. Being cryptic only has value if you actually have something to say. Edit, Xposted.
  17. It's never futile strange, I've learned a lot from your replies to those that refuse to learn, laugh at intelligence, hate stuff etc... But yes, it's futile.
  18. JacobsLadder, you know, the troll who started this shit. That's the problem with skipping to the end, one misses little nuggets of interest.
  19. Sorry to join the party so late, but I've just read up to here and have literally pissed myself laughing and assumed I don't have to read on to know where this thread is going so I think I'll skip to the end. Yup thought so, I really am psychic
  20. Who knew big brother would be kind of the same?
  21. No shit, though I doubt he thought. It's the old argument, is it anti-semitic or anti-profit?
