  1. I'm not sure how that can qualify as informative, something a definition is required to do. Perhaps the problem lies with your definition of "equal". A snowflake is one of a kind, but are its fellows "equal" to it? Each snowflake is unique, but can you also say they are "like no other"? This is an argument from incredulity. You simply can't believe, it makes no sense to you, therefore it isn't. We can't know if the universe is eternal, or infinite in size . It could be. Or it could be finite. It's also an assumption that matter was created from nothing, and one that has led you to these conclusions.
  2. It's still a good idea to make sure we're all using the same definitions. It seems more like a non-description to me. A hand-waiving side-step that leaves me completely uninformed about it, other than it seems there's only one of them. I hope you can appreciate what we have to go through wrt posters and advertising. You're free to use scientific references to support your assertions, even place links, but please don't quote other forums when citing evidence. Use more trusted sources that support mainstream science, not YouTube videos and opinion sites. There's no need for us to read some other philosophy forum's posts when we have you here to discuss the topic with us. We want to hear your thoughts, as a member here. Are you referring to a technological singularity, or a mathematical singularity, or just any one-off phenomena that seems unique? Why does it describe all of existence perfectly for you?
  3. Since this is a science discussion forum, perhaps you could start by giving us your definitions of "Absolute" and "Singularity", so everyone is on the same page.
  4. My mistake then, I quoted you saying you had complete light fittings, not replacement bulbs. My comment was on fixtures where the LED lights are integrated into the fixture, rather than being an LED designed to replace an old filament or CFL bulb or tube.
  5. The replacements can't be as efficient as your complete, integrated LED fixtures. They waste resources on emulating older configurations. An LED bulb isn't enjoying the spirit of solid-state electronics, imo.
  6. The more accepted perspective is that time and the spatial dimensions offer us degrees of freedom rather than constraints.
  7. Dave upgraded us to the Invision 4.6.0 software this morning. It may take a bit to iron out some wrinkles, and feedback is appreciated.
  8. The other factor is the mother. There is a huge metabolic cost for the mother developing a brain that will double in size within a year after birth. Ape brains are about 40% adult size at birth, compared to us at around 25%. At a certain point, the metabolism of the fetus exceeds the mother's ability to keep them both alive, and the mother gives birth.
  9. ! Moderator Note As per the rules. This science discussion forum has them so we don't waste time on WAGs, and they specifically require you to support your assertions and give meaning and clarity to your arguments, yet you continue to post vague guesswork with no evidence. There are other forums where they don't care that you simply wave your hands instead of supporting your science. You should check them out, because if you continue to post here, we will continue to enforce the rules the site's owners have asked us to. Thread closed.
  10. To remove the Al-Qaida network and their influence, to mitigate the power of the Taliban and punish them for harboring terrorists, and to make sure no more terrorist attacks against the US could originate from Afghanistan. That was the job, so we're one for three. The business, on the other hand, managed to keep the arms industry smiling. Billions spent on military hardware, much of it either in the hands of the Taliban now, or destroyed by our own to keep it from falling into terrorist hands. Billions more unaccounted for in corruption, waste, or abuse. We pretended we were helping the Afghans enjoy the fruits of modern freedom, but we left a bunch of greedy, inhuman profiteers in charge of making it so. We never should have done things the way we did, given the history of the region. This is a culture that doesn't trust anyone they haven't sat at a tea table with, face to face. It would have been more effective to put a price on Bin Laden's head, or pay a bounty for captured terrorists. As it was, we kept alternating between burning opium fields and guarding them as a necessary cash crop for the economy, all the while trying to remake these people in our image. I'm sure they think we're insane and want nothing to do with us. I'm glad we're no longer there. I can't blame Biden since Trump would have done this in May, with even more disastrous results for those who waited too long to leave. And the Afghan president's departure is to blame for the speed with which the Taliban is retaking the country. Nothing demoralizes a soldier like seeing the fleeing backside of his C-in-C.
  11. What I didn't ask for was word games that don't help the OP's misconceptions.
  12. SOME measurable space? When your cup dipped into space to grab some for me, did it leave a brief gap, or displace the space that was there so you could bring it to me? I see some actual matter in there, some hydrogen and helium, but are you sure you grabbed the same space? The definition I use, the one that makes the models work, says that spacetime is the geometry we use to designate when and where things happen. The only effect you have on it is the way your mass makes it curve near you. Not that the two are equivalent, but no, absolutely not. How would you find it?
  13. Iirc, the brain and body develop at different rates due to different requirements. We need a big enough head for the brain to fulfill various functions, but not so big that we can't fit through the birth canal, which is restricted in humans partly due to bipedalism. We start out with about 25% of our brain size at birth, and grow the rest after.
  14. You're still thinking of space as a physical thing. Can you bring me a cup of it? Spacetime is the geometry that allows us to model what we observe happening in the universe.
  15. ! Moderator Note This is a science DISCUSSION forum, not a blog, and not a classroom. Please frame any further threads in a way that fosters discussion. If this stuff is on the internet, we can find it. We want to know what you think about the science surrounding your topic. This thread is closed.
  16. You're assuming two things here, that the style was "combative", and that it was done for a certain reason (no rep). I took zapatos' QUESTION about whether the phrase "dumb aholes" was used or not as a comedic one, not combative. It made me laugh when I read it, and it's actually well-written. I could see Jerry saying it to Kramer on Seinfeld. Again, zapatos asked a question. He didn't make a claim. He didn't assume anything. He was, in fact, trying to "obtain that information" by asking a question. Why do you use this combative and fallacious talking style? And you go on and on and on, all based on behavior you're accusing someone else of. Your own arguments sound canned, like you have them waiting so you can apply them when you wish, even when they don't apply. Do you have some kind of vendetta?
  17. This is the Relativity section though, so the discussion should "intertwine" as minimally as possible. If you're a bot, this needs work. Is a regular question allowed to permeate a venerable question? Seems disrespectful. And you need to connect the dots between what space is made of and the meaning of human life. It's too much of a reach without context.
  18. Mental torture needs defining too. Pots and puns are a good place to start.
  19. They smelled the terpenes in your weed, so that would be "moral terpetude".
  20. ! Moderator Note Rule 2.7 Advertising and spam is prohibited. We don't mind if you put a link to your noncommercial site (e.g. a blog) in your signature and/or profile, but don't go around making threads to advertise it. 21. ! Moderator Note When you wish to discuss this more meaningfully, send me a message and I'll re-open it.
  22. So we have your "logic" vs your doctor's opinion, and part of your criticism is that your doctor can only come up with one explanation, which is exactly what you've done. I'm not saying you aren't right, but you both have a single explanation about what's going on with your eyes, and she's had training and experience. I'll echo Bufofrog's reply about doctors and trust. You should get a second opinion if you doubt your doctor's advice. I have a condition most people find painful, but for me it's more like a lack of sensitivity, a numbness. The medications for it are trying to alleviate the underlying condition rather than focusing on pain management, and I've heard migraine meds are the same. You may have migraines that don't affect you in a painful way. After hearing about others with my condition, I'm glad I don't have the pain, and I take the meds to keep it that way.
  23. Science shows us how to focus on the solution rather than the problem, so your perspective isn't helping you. Find one solution, and the opportunity to find five more solutions suddenly appears. Solutions that didn't exist before the science. This is how our intelligence works. Blissful ignorance is a trap for animals, but our intelligence allows us to learn and gain a broader understanding of how the universe operates. Learning one thing leads to learning (at least) five new things. And those each lead to.... You're not trying to trash science, but you're questioning the intentions of the people involved in it with a discussion in the Religion sub-forum?
  24. ! Moderator Note I would like some assurances that you won't melt down if your ideas are criticized like the last time. It was extremely uncivil, unscientific, and unacceptable. What has changed?
  25. This is NOT an example of an argument in good faith. You've been given an explanation, and you seem to be ignoring it while continuing to ask others to explain it to you. Are you here to spread misinformation, or are you here to learn?
