  1. I agree as to the fact that not all religions are equally evil all the time. As far as inconsistency goes its hard to quantify which tenet or myth is more or less contradicting, how do you quantify whether reincarnation is more/less inconsistent than ressurection. As far as the OP question is concerned its a dead end...first of all you do not turn a believer, he/she is already turned into their faith. I consider people who are free of the burden of religion to be simply that. Turning a believer implies turning into something or someone with specific views. I’m in the process of my own evolution in thinking about these things, I have to change something because Im loosing too much time which I could use more productivly elsewhere. I like Edward Witten’s take on this...he is often asked in interviews about his views on religion and he always answers that he never felt the need to think about religion, its was just never of interest to him. This most probably enables him to spend more time on productive things.
  2. I agree and I find myself in similar disbelief (or even anger) both with US/Trump related news and my local things going on here. I think It is up to the older generation to teach the younger generation to distinguish between hilton/marriott & Fred/Tim discrepancies (what @iNow wrote above) and how these discrepancies are different from propaganda with an agenda. It is a shame that thsese things have to be taught but it seems that peoples gullability and blindess caused by various factors (environment pressure, upbringing, etc) requires to teach this. When all is said related to these sensitive subjects (guns, religion, idiot for a president) all one can do is try to mold critical minds capable of both logic, empathy and civility. Lack of these three qualities in right proportions causes things like the cnn post you linked.
  3. Yes, that must be it. He tweets from an 80 inch screen then, set to visual disability mode, hes blind as a bat - case solved
  4. I just saw a 15 minute interview with the author which made me order the book, how much of the book is factual and accurate and how much is political game play? I'd like to hear opinions from people who read it and/or have some deeper insight. During the interview, the author stated unbelievably controversial things like: Trump doesn't read, he watches talk shows though so WH staff lobbies to invite people to the talk shows to influence him...Trump doesn't read anything which is handed to him, he immediately sets aside any notes or piece of paper that is given to him without looking at it. Link to the book on amazon: Commercial links not allowed, removed by moderator https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_and_Fury
  5. Could you elaborate on this with an example?
  6. From what you write I agree that it does look like it's the tap water but always keep a sharp mind and remember that correlation does not imply causation. I hope your Mrs will be ok, be sure get her to an MD.
  7. I get that. And I get that you get that its sarcasm. I don’t get the inability to spell „colour” part.
  8. I like their clips, especially the ones interviewing physicists, I watched most of them if not all of them. I am a little dissapointed that they interview Leonard Susskind and a couple weeks later Deepak Chopra pops up (havent watched that one) There was always something, there was never nothing. I like that notion.
  9. Oh it is shiny...and its got Isaac with the cool long hair on it: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isaac_Newton_Medal
  10. Perhaps contaminated plumbing like fungus or bacteria from some organic residue in the pipes.
  11. Oh thats just wonderful isn’t it. In my search for data on vaccines (especially MMR) in the last year or so I spoke to quite a few mothers of autistic children between the ages of 8 and 15. All of them went through a 180 degree shift from initial anger and lobbying against vaccines to getting the knowledge and lobbying against the anti-vaccine movement. The psychological mechanisms of this conspiracy theory are equally astonishing as they are dangerous.
  12. On top of this being the most productive thread in religion since I came here, the proof is flawless...well almost flawless because its missing the GPB coolness ordering but that is always zero so it may be left out. Nevertheless, I think this is ready for the Newton Medal award.
  13. Light: visible or invisible? I presume the heat evolved is not in the water (in that equation) but I have no idea how to answer what are the "dimensions" of HCL in this scenario, I don;t understand the question. I'll stick to reading in this thread.
  14. I might be talking crap here because I'm horrible at chemistry but isn't the heat in the water a property therefore the two are consistent dimensionally because they don't have to be compared? God I think I know where this is going (what MigL mentioned about the other thread) and this time thankfully I will be able to shut up because I suck at chemistry (and math)
  15. But isn’t the 16.61 kcal consistent dimensionally with the 10H2O?
  16. I’m not sure I understand...if we start comparing quantities of different dimensions like say time and mass or length and velocity we end up straight in cuckoo land like a lot of the crackpots posting in the relativity threads. So in that sense, science has to be consistent dimensionally... but I’m a rookie so I might not be getting the nuances of the question (not like that other thread though )

    Today I Learned

Today I learned that the country of Bhutan produces only 5% of its potential hydroenergy production and sells 70% of that.
  18. Lets start off with the fact that water (and essentially all other matter) reacts to a magnetic field if the field is powerful enough: ”Liquid water is affected by magnetic fields and such fields can assist its purification. Water is diamagnetic and may be levitated in very high magnetic fields (10 T, compare Earth's magnetic field 50 μT). Lower, but still powerful, magnetic fields (0.2 T) have been shown, in simulations, to increase the number of monomer water molecules but, rather surprisingly, they increase the tetrahedrality at the same time” http://www1.lsbu.ac.uk/water/magnetic_electric_effects.html#mag
  19. We watched an episode of a documentary called „The wonder list with Bill Weir” on Iceland last night... they have trolls and elves for religion, people rarely get married, women are ruling the country, no guns, very rare suicides. They refuse to sell out their thermal energy for profit, they have very strong laws and beliefs concerning preservation of nature plus their landscape is like rendered from a fantasy computer game - they’re healthy and happy. They didn’t mention anything about diseases and vaccines but I presume its not an issue there. If it was a bit warmer there I wouldn’t hesitate to move.

    Yay, GUNS!

The way I see it, is the government should show up at his house with between 600 and 800 dolars in cash. I know its virtually impossible but thats what should be done. Respect for the guy in the film, too bad he’s most likely in the minority.
  21. Nimenrix + Bexsero for our 22 month old for meningococcal, flu shots for wifey and whiskey for me and hope for the best.
  22. I’ll take the modnote if its coming to me. In fact I reported my own post for the mods to see.
