Almost all problems are caused by language. Beliefs arise largely through language and beliefs are the motivation for individual human actions. It is these actions which cause most problems. Philosopy has not been able to progress because of language difficulties; it's impossible to build on the work of others if you don't understand what they mean. Although I only understood and accepted this recently, matter existed long before the universe had any concept of life or consciousness. So conscious observation most likely doesn't change what any particle is or does... all particles / atoms / molecules were there and doing the same thing to begin with. In highschool I had the geo-thermal idea myself. Same proposition: drill deep enough till you hit lava. The retractors are that you would sort of want two holes. One for water, one for steam out. How do you connect these holes especially in the presence of lava? So the bore hole thing doesn't play out.
