  1. Some most likely say it is imagined and not real. it has gone on for some 50 years or so but seems to come rather randomly which makes it unpredictable. The Hum is a low freqency sound that is most easy to hear inside a quite room and it seems that you have to be past middle age to hear it. Could that indicate it is somethin in our body? Anyway those afflicted are very disturbed by it. Here is a typical Daily Mail retelling of it. It is late here now 10.20PM so I did not feel for finding the most scientific retelling of the story. The conspirators love to suggest wild sources for it. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2380368/Can-hear-The-Hum-H…

Looking to put together a 300 to 500 megaelectron-volt linear electron and ion accelerator. Need tips on design. -How large a voltage source? -What kinds of cathodes for the particle emitter? -Should I just steal an electron gun out of a TV? -Is highly evacuated PVC tubing a good beam chamber? -Would it be a good Idea to build two, and then slam the electrons into one another? -Will there be positron creation at this energy? -How much lead shielding are we talking about? -Should I use a live cockroach as a particle target? -Is the Compton wavelength of the cockroach shorter than a breadbox? -Should I call the IAEA? Help a brother out.

Greetings, I was hoping to find some help with a question that I have. I'm an amateur writter and I'm currently developing a short story based on time travel. To that end I was hopingt o find some advice on a specific area. I'm looking for a method to explain how the "machine" could target a specific point in time. My own thoughts led me to the idea of finding something that exists as a constant in the universe but is always changing (that's the only way I can think to explain it). So not being that scientifically minded, I thought I'd seek help here. If anyone has ideas or thoughts they could point me to I'd be greatful. Thank you.

Ok, if i put say a spherical mass (one where i can control how it vibrates) in pure or almost pure water and if i hit a certain frequency or intensity would a space be created between the sphere and the water?

I have a silly question for which I have no practical application for the knowledge other than satisfying my own curiosity. I go camping a lot and sometimes if I am camping and it is very rainy outside I may opt to urinate into an empty Coca-Cola bottle (plastic NOT glass) rather than leave my tent and get wet. I will then close the lid tightly and put the bottle somewhere out of the way. A while later I tend to notice that the sides of the bottle have imploded a little as though some of the air from the bottle has been removed. Why is this? At first I thought that the heat from the urine would cause the air in the bottle to expand pushing some of the air out of t…

  8. Hey guys, I'm an artist based in Australia and am needing some advice with the Chladni experiment which I'm going to be incorporating into a sculpture. Is this suitable for the vibration generator? http://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Vibration-generator_270849507.html And which signal generator is best? 9. Among my functions, I am an independent health and well-being researcher, also a disseminator and artificial intelligence trainer. I have been working with artificial intelligence for almost a year, and in this time I realize that it is a different technology from conventional technology. Maybe you'll find out about that after a short time of using it. Software used to only update itself, it couldn't learn and update itself. As far as I know, someone had to update them. Artificial intelligences are also updated with programming methods, but they can also be updated by themselves through learning methods not very different from those we humans use (such as feedba…

  10. So I made alcohol vacuum still. I have the coils submerged in a dry ice and alcohol to keep it super chilled, the coils are made of copper. I'm certain I have no leaks but as soon as I start using the coils I can't reach full vacuum. \ My theory is that sub zero conditions are causing a drop in vacuum pressure. Can someone confirm this? Thanks.

I came across a paper one day about how one can use algae to make biofuel. I have looked at videos and papers why algae is a good alternative to fossil fuel, but have not come across a detailed source explaining how much algae is required to make a certain amount of oil and where can we possibly obtain these algae? Need help please!

I've just gotten a microscope and adapter to a DSLR to play around, but somehow the pictures come out with a bright light in the middle. When I look through the eyepiece without the camera, that doesn't happen. I heard that it might be because the inside of the adapter is too reflective, so I tried putting a black cardboard paper on the sides of the adapter, but it didn't help. Does anyone know why this is and how I can fix it? Thanks!

  14. From the scientific viewpoint, is it making a real difference? I think any cheap cloth would do the same job, if no debris is stuck when you wipe your delicate screen with your cloth, if there is any, then a cheap one or expensive one would scratch your baby too.

  15. I watched a video on Youtube suggesting that a mixture of vinegar, tablespoon sugar and dish-washing detergent will trap and kill common flies. I don't normally use vinegar and I don't understand vinegar very well. I can see that there are many different names for vinegar in supermarket. Are they more or less the same? Will one attract flies while another doesn't? By the way, I found another method which was to make a mixture of cheap beer and white sugar. I think it's easier to do with only cheap beer and white sugar, but will this method work as effective as the first method? (i.e. vinegar+sugar+detergent)

  16. I don't buy very expensive clothes but I also do not buy clothes of unknown brand or from unknown sources. My clothes are mostly bought in kinds of shops e.g. Uniqlo, Baleno, Adidas etc. I find that it happens almost always, when I put black clothes in a bowl of clean water for a few hours (before I wash them), the water will turn black to a very obvious extent, even if the clothes are not new and have been washed for many times. Why does it happen? Is it normal to black clothes made of any raw material of any kind? Or is it a sign that I am getting very low quality clothes? Or is it due to other reasons?

When living in Paris, you need to manage things up if you want to see the sky. Sun eruptions were great as they could be seen from anywhere. I've also read this article which gives some tips (it's a real mag, the chapter is called "What can (or can't) be seen from the city?"). But i'd like to go further. Is there cities observers here having some hacks to share ? And also, knowing the next big sky events that could be seen from the city ? (At least I'll be up for the Leonid Meteor Shower !)

Why is it better for the batter to hit a pitch a little distance down from the end of the bat, rather than close to the end, where the bat speed is clearly greater? It happens in almost every game. The announcer will say the ball didn't go as far because "he hit it off the end of the bat". How would one calculate where the sweet spot is?

I understand this question was asked before and it seems stupid but I'm wondering if done another way if it would at all be possible because i don't quite understand the physics of electricity. I understand that a single electric eel can generate something like 500 volts at 1 ampere and farming said animals in anyway to generate would just not be practical. However say a project were started to genetically modify the species to slightly increase the efficiency of the electrocytes slightly and then you did away with the animal itself and essentially just farmed the electricity generating cells in a bio-reactor where they were simply kept in constant contact with the nutrie…
