ERD, Energy Renewal Device. Of course, what I made was impossible because a force cannot make more than it is. It was a circuit that consisted of a battery which had two outputs- one to the lightbulb, another to a motor. The motor was connected to a generator, which connected back to the battery. But I assumed it was 100% clean energy that wouldn't run out. I just watched it not-long-enough-to-see-the-battery run out. Aww, I was so close to clean energy!

Growing microinvertabrates is fun and easy. Simply go outside and collect some hay. Put in a dish or test tube and fill with distilled water. Observe each day as peramecium and other protazoa grow and thrive. Note: this may take a while to develop. For the first week or so you get common protazoa. My favorite lab ever!!!!!

We are wanting to test 4 different bandages to see whick will inhibit bacteria best. we plan to use petri dishes and agar. Not sure how to go about this experiment. should we place the bandage in the petri dish? Where do we get the bacteria? Help!!! Any ideas to steer us in the right direction on this project?

here`s a really cool experiment anyone can do that not only gives very interesting results (some of which I`ll present here) but won`t break the bank either, I`ll only present some of the effects and results here as the potential hasn`t been fully explored yet by myself leaving Plenty of scope for others to join in. you`ll need a cheap webcam, you can pick them up for pocket change nowadays. the Best sort are the ones that you have to focus manually by turning the lens holder. you`ll have to take this appart so that you can unscrew it entirely to see the CCD chip itself, although the CDD isn`t the bit you`r after, the bit you need to remove is 99.99% of the time in…

For anyone who might have the answer. If you filled a wooden box (say) 25cm cubed with 20p coins, & then poured in liquid nitrogen, would that make a solid block of coins?

I was wondering, if you took 4 AA batteries, and hooked them up to a metal plate, if it would create a noticiable charge?

Hello I'm in Grade 10 and I'm thinking about my science fair project. I just learned about phage therapy, which could be promising because all bacteria have a certain resistance to antibiotics (right?). So I was wondering if I could do such thing (considering that I can get a proffessor to help me) at my level. And then, another problem, what kind of experiment could be done? Something that could be interesting for a science fair.... Thanks in advance.

To anyone who cares, for my next project I want to try my hand at building my own cutting laser. I don't mean the cheap DVD player/mini-mag flashlight light matches and pop balloons thing. I want to use it to cut sheet metal and spot weld. I would be greatly appreciative to anyone who could direct me where to look. Is it possible to take a laser that is moderately powerful and mae it more powerful? Maybe a 1000mW laser? Can someone please help me with this?

I was experimenting this morning with different color filters for one of my camera flashes and noticed a Very odd phenomenon! the Blue and Red filters (especially) made a slight Ticking sound and I felt a little "Kick" in the filter frame each time the flash went off. I showed this to my wife and she confirmed I wasn`t imagining it. I set up a small sheet of blue acetate on a string suspended off a retort stand and tried again, it Moved the filter! I experimented with black film and tinfoil, both gave a "kick" but the black film was the strongest by far. and after several shots the film was getting quite hot, enough to leave an impression on the film. my conclusi…

Hello, I'd like to share one of my latest experiments, a laser interferometer that I made at home with about $20 of parts (well, I used a green laser, but a red can work too). Of course, I had two mirrors, a lens to magnify the interference fringes, but how did I really save money? I used a 10 cent CD jewel case for a beam splitter! Even with this hacking, I got some crisp fringes, and I hope to use this to test the stability of my setup when I try making holograms again. Even though I'm only working with Class IIIa lasers, you should take care not to look into the beam or reflections. Laser goggles of a low optical density might be advisable. Here's th…

I'm looking for my next year's science-fair project and I thought about obesity. In Canada 25% of the population is overweight and in the USA, even more. Only that I don't know what kind of research (or experiment) I could do? I'll probably get the help of a lab, or a reasearcher at the closest univesity, so I could maybe do something related with rats, or some lab... but what could there be done in the obesity domaine? I heard there could be medicine that helps...anyone knows more about that?

This is a problem I have at work. (not sure if this is posted in the right place- especially as it the amateur science thread but here goes). I have a glassy like substance which starts to sag and run at about 850 to 950C. Up until then it holds its shape pretty well. I have tried several additives to up its melting/sagging point. All work fine in my in house home built furnace which gets up to about 900C. When I send my samples off for larger scale tests the temps get up to over 1000C. I have tried and failed (well I have upped it, but not enough) in the past to mix additives which will up the sag point of this substance. We have some new ideas and want to test t…

I have a feeling that this has been considered previously, but I'm not sure where... Anyway, I'm looking for some pointers on increasing the strength of a basic home-made electromagnet. I know greater cross-sectional area, more coils of the circut, and greater current will work, but any other suggestions or elaboration on the first three would be appreciated. Goal of the project: create an electromagnet that will be able to hold securely to a sheet of steel despite sharp pulls of ~150N. Maximum current available: whatever 1 car battery can offer. Also, sorry for the vague "question," but my plans for this are currently this vague...

For instance the experiment/magic trick of grinding black pepper over a bowl of water and then putting soap on the tip of your finger without someone seeing. Then you proceed to stick your finger in the water and all the pepper rushes to the sides of the bowl... If you do it correctly it looks like magic to your dim friend xD (I believe it has something to do with the water and the oils in soap and blah blah blah.) I would love to hear of any other cool experiments that are so simple you just can't help but love them.

I was looking around online trying to come up with a new experiment to do and came across the Aurora's. I found some interesting things out and was wondering if one could manage to shoot a large amount of electrons into an enclosed magnetic field, would it have the same effect?

Hey guys I recently posted a video on YouTube of me doing an experiment with the speed of light. I was actually #10 most watched *and* top rated for 24 hours, and am currently #33 top rated for the week. I think it's awesome that people get interested in science like that, so I figured I should do more (plus I had so much fun!). Here's the video along with a short blog post I wrote to accompany it (it has some factors I thought might be interesting to add to the relatively short video): http://www.smarterthanthat.com/experiments/measuring-the-speed-of-light/'>http://www.smarterthanthat.com/experiments/measuring-the-speed-of-light/ So, I'd love to hear…

Hey hey guys, The other day I posted a science experiment where I show how water rise inside a glass with fire in it. I explained the process wrong, though, and Shane Killian, along with some other fellas, corrected me. That was actually quite cool - I think it's one of the best things about science and learning, to have people think about things and criticize them. That's how we learn. First off, the videos are here (both): http://www.smarterthanthat.com/experiments/a-physics-party-trick-that-sucks-liquid/ Anyhoo, I was thinking about this quite a lot, and I am not sure if what causes the effect is the heat.. What I was thinking, is that the fire …

Hi, I have a question Suposse that I have a device that produces 500 Volts at 0.1 Amps. There is any device that I can transform that 500 Vols at 0.1 Amps, in higher Amps? I think that if I want to up the Amps, I must lower the Volts? I don´t know if I´m explaning it ok or not. I´m going to put an example: I have 1500 Volts at 0.2 Amps, Can I transform to... 300 Volts at 1 Amp? What device I must to employ to do that?

The water bridge article is here: http://eloah.at/waterbridge/Water_Bridge_JOPDAP.pdf The video is here: http://www.tendencias21.net/Descubren-que-el-agua-puede-formar-puentes_a2004.html?voir_commentaire=oui Enjoy, and ...do it? The anode conection from a CRT television or monitor can be borrowed to try. Just discharge before handling.
