I am new to element collecting, and off to a good start. However easy it was to aquire most elements, I've now discovered how difficult and expensive it is to aquire the remaining few. I am hoping there are other collectors out there who might have extras they are willing to trade for since my funding has quickly run out. Also it seems the commercial chemical distributors do not sell to individuals. Any help or advice appreciated. Thanks!

The enthalpy of vaporization of acetone is 32.0kJ/mol. The normal boiling point of acetone is 56.5 degrees Celcius. What is the vapor pressure of acetone at 25 degrees Celcius? Ok I think I need to use the Clausius-Clapeyron equation: but then I only have 4 out of the 6 unknowns, delta H, T2, T1 and R. If this is the correct method, then how do I find P1?

I've always wanted to make syntetic gems, so I want to start with transparent sapphire (pure Al2O3). If you can help me to make quartz I would be also happy. Ideas of making it? Here are mine: Reacting Al with water and KOH (I don't have NaOH for the moment). Reacting HCl with K2Al2O4. (I think that's the way is made in the Bayer process) to make KCl and Al(OH)3 and heating to make Al2O3. The problem with this is that I can't measure the amounts and adding excess HCl could make it react with Al(OH)3 to make AlCl3. And I'm planning to make an oxyhydrogen torch to melt it, but while that happens I don't want to have Al2O3 powder, any way to make a single crystal? Anothe…

Hello, I need some nitric acid. What are some ways nitric acid is made. I have a whole lot of sodium nitrate and sulfuric acid, and I do have a decent amount of glassware that would be suitable for the experiment. Thanks, Eddie

I saw in the news that evacuation of a university building was done, but as I was reading the source, it says due to a chemical called "Ammonia Silver Nitrate." I remember this chemical not to be dangerous and wikipedia doesn't say anything about it. Any info?

Hey, I was playing with Penrose/Coecke diagrams for Hilbert spaces and general linear maps and I discovered a quick proof that catalysis is the trace of a map! Have a look at my blog post. http://whyilovephysics.blogspot.com/ Ben

This can sound ridiculous, but I can't buy any sulfuric acid... So I want to make mine. I noticed that 2HCl+CaSO4=CaCl2+H2SO4 is indeed exothemic, but I saw somewhere that CaSO4 doesn't dissolve in HCl. Do I have a problem with entropy here? (so just heating it will work), CaSO4 is indeed soluble or maybe the levels of hydration affects something?

Hi All, May I know why is Copper(I) Oxide red while Copper(I) Chloride white? I'm aware that d-d transition does not occur in Cu+, hence is ligand-metal charge transfer responsible for the colour observed? If yes, how so? If not, what is the likely cause? Apologies, my knowledge of chemistry is only up to to 'A' levels at the moment. Regards Alfredo

so i was watching saw 6 (i think it was 6) and i saw the needles come down on this guy and pumped him full of HCl and i wanted to know how to make this. my friends told me to just get some H and Cl and put it in a gas cylinder, pressurize it, and hen i would get the HCl, but i dont think its that simple. if you could tell me how to make it i would be really happy P.S i know i can buy it on the interwebz but i want to have some fun burning my fingers off

Hi guys, I basically just want to know if there is a test to prove the presence of methane in a gas. I am looking for something like the CO2 test with limewater and not 'just light it and look for a flame'. Thanks

Hi all Just wondering if anyone out there can help me with one of my questions for my uni assignment? Use the following balanced chemical equation to calculate the mass of carbon dioxide produced from the burning of 3.73 kg of jet fuel which can be represented by the molecule C12H26. You should quote your answer to 3 significant figures in units of kg. The relative atomic masses (RAMs) needed to do this calculation are as follows; RAM (carbon) = 12.0; RAM (oxygen) = 16.0; and RAM (hydrogen) = 1.01. 2 C12H26 + 37 O2 = 24 CO2 + 26 H2O If anyone can please give me any advice or point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated As …

Q: I have AISI 304 Stainless steel as a base metal for thin film deposition. The main alloying elements except of Fe are Cr (18%) and Ni (8%). So, i've coated the steel with pure Si using sputtering method. Then i use heat treatment to obtain intermetallic phase between film-substrate. So i just want to know between Cr and Ni, which one is more tend to react with Si beside Fe??.

I'm just bringing a conversation I started in the "Introduction" thread to a more appropriate forum. I plan to use the two fluids from "glow sticks" to simulate a "nuclear fuel" in a beaker being discovered by the protagonist in my film. I have tried it and the effect is very striking, and the light emitted is adequate for video. But although it's a brilliant effect, I thought I might be able to give it a bit more punch by making fumes rise from the coloured fluid when they're mixed. The traditional way of getting "chemical fumes" in movies is to plonk some dry ice into water. So I was wondering, what might happen if I had a few small pellets, (about the siz…

In my haste while trying to finish up some laundry I threw some nearly dry dishcloths (that had vinegar on them) into the washer with a little bleach. Awhile later I thought uh oh. Just wondering what everything thinks as how big of a boo-boo I made. Obviously my intent was not to make chlorine gas. Any and all ideas no this are appreciated. Thanks~

Hi everyone... I have a love for chemitry and some day hope to become a chemist I have a question: what is the strongest acid known, what is its PH and formula? Are there any prospects for stronger acids to be produced in the future? Thanks for the help, Ryan Jones

Title says it all. I have recently done some work with AgNO3 but as I handled it only for a few seconds, I didn't wear gloves and afterwards I got black stains on both of my palms. How should I remove them or should just wait for them to wear of?

Ok question about the Mulliken symbols... In a C2v character table z is assigned a mulliken symbol A1. A is defined as a nondegerate and symmetric to principal axis and 1 is defined to mean symmetric with respect to C2 perpendicular to principal axis. Taking Water as an example for C2v symmetry which has no perpendicular C2 axis how do you assign the mulliken symbol A1. Also, same thing for y and x which are assigned B2 and B1 respectively. Don't get how these symbols come about when they don't apply to the definition of what they stand for. Please help....
