My computer got a terrible error. More Precisely, there are two errors. My computer reboots on and off. This is the terrible symptom I experience. When I check the BIOS, I noticed two things. There are two pre-boot errors. Pre-boot error: Memory size decreased Pre-boot error: Keyboard not functional Does anyone have idea? I've bought a new keyboard with the connection USB instead of the old PS2. Recently, my computer reboots even at the BIOS panel. I am afraid the situation is worsening.

On my home pc, running windows XP, zip files seem very easy to handle. They have an icon which looks like a normal folder but with a zipper on it, and when I click on it, it opens very quickly, just like a normal folder would. All this seems completely innate to Windows. On my laptop, zip files are a pain. I am also running Windows XP, but when I got it, it did not recognise zip files and I had to download the trial version of winzip. Winzip seems a complete pain, and isn't nearly so nice as the other utility on my desktop. Also, you have to pay for it (I am still using the evaluation version). Is there anyway i can configure what programs automatically load at startup? I got this realy bigass program that loads at startup and eats all my memory and cpu.while i want to keep this program i want to be able to choose when i start it up.

I was just browsing the net as usual and left my laptop on its own for a while, I came back few mins later and there is a blue screen that said the error was detected and system was halted to prevent damage, something like that. Not that this hasn't happened to me before, it happened a few times during the year but after next reboot it worked just fine. This time though I switched power off and on and tried to boot it again, it asked to check the drive and I let it. It came to stage 2 (winxp pro) and the blue screen came again. I need some help (I work on a Windows XP hp pavillion laptop (zd7000)) I kept getting all these spyware warnings over and over. Then the screen froze down. I tried running Ad aware. Everthing froze. I removed the battery which broke the circuit and shut the laptop down. (I'm not sure if this was the best move). I then reinserted the laptop battery and everthing was fine and it came to the Xp login screen. I then clicked on my login (limited account) The screen is just an enlarged version of the wallpaper with no icons showing. And its frozen in this state. Okay, I downloaded that game Guild Wars and although didn't have a good enough video card to keep up with it hoped I could set it on lower qulaity setting and play without trouble (as I am able to do with such other games as Knight of the Old Republic) Cutting my self-loathing rant short, my computer is now stuck in 640 by 480 pixels with 16 bit medium color quality, and it won't let me change the settings. Hey all, and Merry Christmas. I spent the majority of Christmas Eve working on getting linux (specifically, Ubuntu 5.1) dual-booting happily with windows (well, that and wrapping, anyway). So far, so good, except one thing - I have not, for all I'm worth, been able to get my wireless LAN set up in ubuntu, or any linux for that matter (I tried it first with SUSE, which was brutal and didn't appeal to me, so I went back to Ubuntu, which I'd liked from the LiveCD). Can anyone help solve my wireless woes? Thanks much!

My neighbour got a wireless router for his house for christmas(and got me round to set it up since neither he or is wife could figure it out) but this morning when i turned on my laptop it kept trying to connect to his network instead of mine. I've set all the preferences so that my laptop should prefer my own network instead of his but it just doesn't seem to work. My network has the higher value(since it doesn't have to travel as far or through as many walls) and is even on a different channel. but for some reason it still wants to connect to his network. Any ideas?

i downloaded a NIH software called ImageJ to analyze the area of growth for some cell cultures which were photographed and put into a ppt. document. however, when I try to upload/open it in the program, a window popps up that says "plugin not found: ZVI_Reade". I checked the available plugins but ZVI_Reade doesn't exist. What does this mean and do I need to download a plugin? Thankyou.

So this is a noob help request, but I need help. I am trying to upload a custom image and it hasn't worked for the past 8 or so tries. I made sure it's under 100x100 pixels and that it's way under 48.8 KB. I checked file name and even renamed it. I can figure out why SFN keeps saying "Invalid File Name"....Does SFN hate me and want me to cry??

my computer started making unusual scratching and clicking sound and a sound like something was restarting in the cpu. i pinpointed it to the harddrive. now my harddrive isnt detected and wont boot. HELP

i just installed ubuntu (hoary hedgehog) and when i start up the computer it says "Sync. out oF Range" in a red box that moves across the screen. when i press the power button it goes back to login for a few seconds, then shuts down. How can i easily fix this? i know it has to do with the monitor refresh rate, but imi not sure exactly what to adjust. thank sin advanced

hey i've just come back from holidays and my msn messenger version 7.5 wont work. my norton antivirus has just expired also. before my msn messenger wouldnt work when my norton antivirus software wasnt fully loaded. (there was something that had to load .. a productivity control list i think, and if that wasnt loaded messenger wouldnt connect). now that norton has expired, that productivity control list wont work and now messenger wont work. is there any way to get messenger working again without using this norton security. also is there any way to renew my norton without paying thanks ..

the internet on my laptop stopped working. i beileive the problem is that the computer reorderd the pccards so slot one is registered as four. the internet is connected to slot one and i cant figure out how to switch them back. any help would be most welcome.

my housemate has a laptop with, according to the devise manager, an internal wireless internet card. All of the things that mention this 'ieee 802.11b minipci wireless network adapter' (such as device manager, wireless network wizard etc) report that its there, enabled and functioning correctly. however, i can't actually get his laptop to do anything wifi-y, eg detect my wireless router. i dont know that much about wireless networking, but i think iv got the basic potential problems covered -- the router is set to simultaniously transmit 802.11b and g, its not stealthed, it doesnt have encryption yet etc -- so i was wondering if theres any way that i test it…

Long story, but I was playing around with using different firewalls and when I installed ZA (ZoneAlarm) and then logged onto SFN there was 1 noticeable problem. You know how you can click on New Posts, Search or Quick Links and get a drop down menu... well the drop down part didn't work. As soon as I disabled ZA it did work. As soon as I removed ZA and went back to Norton firewall it worked. This wasn't a browser setting, ZA itself was blocking part of SFN despite the fact I gave www.scienceforums.net 100% access rights. Oh, and it wouldn't let Yahoo! Mail load either. Again the site had access rights and again disabling/removing ZA fixed the issue. I…

Hi all, My external harddrive cannot be opened from "My Computer" any more... A popup window saying that the partition is not yet partitioned, which isn't apearing before.... I have run a check on it using Partition Magic 7.0 trial, and indeed there are errors... The errors are: 1) plenty of "File Record Mark used" 2) 1 "Internal File number does not match" 3) 1 "crossed linked files were found" 4) 1 "Error: %d" note: the error listed may have spelling error. I just started using a computer that hadnt been used in almost a year. the first day it worked fine, but the second day i used it, it took almost a half hour to load msconfig and most other programs take longer if they load at all. i though i heard one of the internal components restart but the computer didnt reboot. is this a hardware problem like overheating? or do i just need to defrag the drive?

I've got a USB stick, and some files on there i dont want anyone to see (they are microsoft word documents). Is there any way to like.. put a password onto the file or folder or put a password onto my usb at all? so it will not allow people to access the folder that these word documents are in? thanks
