The problem is that i'm now running openoffice on linux which endonote is not compatible with so i need to install a new reference manager. After a lot of research i have decided on bibus being a very new kubuntu user i have no idea how i go about installing bibus on my laptop. i found the site where the instructions are but they make no sense to me. could anyone give me some simple guidance in how to go about this? heres the link: http://bibus-biblio.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Installation#Debian_and_Ubuntu t…

I've just installed Tor on my computer to use as a proxy, but I'm wondering if its any good. I also want to know if it contains any malicious programs or spyware or something so that I can delete it before it does harm. I checked my virus scanner and so far it checks out. Does anybody here have it, know what it is, knows if it is any good. It's free if you want to download it by the way.

I got a new (my dad's old) surge protector yesterday, and I think it killed my PC! I plugged everything in and it all worked fine for a night. Today while plugging in the printer, I bumped the surge protector and both my PC and my monitor lost power. Neither of them would turn back on. After fiddling with the cord, I found that the monitor would come on if I jiggled the cord right. Anyhow, I got that all sorted and the monitor works fine, but the PC is absolutely dead. It won't even power up. I've swapped power cables, outlets, etc., etc., all to no avail. I suspect that the power supply has kicked the bucket. It was fairly cheap, and I've had it for about a year and a ha…

For the last few months i've been travelling and using my Ipod as a flash disk to store photos. Anyway after coming back a few days ago I found out for some reason I can't copy them back onto my computer. Everytime I try to copy a photo it comes up with a message saying 'Cannot copy Image_2873 the Parameter is Incorrect' Anyone have a clue whats going on as I really don't want to lose the 3 or 4 thousand photos I have. Cheers

Why is windows reporting my thunderbird to be of 21GB size? Is this some kind of glitch or could there really be that many emails in it?? (Perhaps something else in the same folder or??) I recently reinstalled it on new formatted partition.

Ever since I installed this new motherboard I've been having these small 'zaps' in sound when playing mp3s etc, very annoying noise. Sometimes it's not there, sometimes it is. I tried 2 different drivers and it didn't change much. Anyone got any ideas? ... It also appears to occur when cpu is in use, however cpu is dual core 3.2ghz, it shouldn't affect sound should it?

OK so those who followed my last thread will know windows has decided to try and digest itself. After talking to YT I have decided to try and parallel run Ubuntu and XP, but this time from a pendrive, as it should be "apparently" a 300% faster boot time. Now lets assume I can boot from a usb device for the time being, anybody tried this? things I need to consider? I reckon a 4Gb pendrive should do the job (XP is 1.5 Gb and Ubuntu is ~ 1 Gb ?), but what about things like cooling? I think I could build a box for it with a fan from an ABS box and take off the little plastic cover. Anyawy any thoughts would be great. From googling I have seen this has been t…

I just tried to install the latest Ubuntu release on my PC... I have two SATA drives forming a striped RAID array which is what Windows boots from... those use the onboard SATA connectors on the motherboard. I also have an IDE drive for documents and my DVD burner; those are connected to the onboard IDE channels. Despite the DVD drive having the highest priority in the boot priority list, it is being completely ignored on startup. Is this invasion and occupation of my boot priority list territories normal RAID behaviour?

I need to get more RAM and a much bigger hard drive, but I don't want to go through the trouble if I have other bottlenecks that will limit my success. My processor is Celeron 1.7 ghz, so that is probably reason enough just to ditch the whole motherboard, but I was also wondering about the BUS. In the Ubuntu Device Manager, it doesn't have much to say about the BUS. It just says PCI/PNP, nothing to say about its capacity/capabilities. How can I find out what I am working with here? Is there supposed to be a little sticker on the BUS somewhere telling me its specs? Is there anything else I should look out for when taking all of this into consideration? This comp…

Throughouts the decade, DOS commands have been altered and changed. I know there is MD and mkdir these days, but I can't remember which ones are the really old ones. Does anyone know? I can't quite remember, but I probably have some books I could digup around this house. I'm planning on creating a batchscript to use on various types of Windows computers. In other words, different Windows OSs. I can't remember if I can use the same kind of MS-DOS commands on all versions of Windows or if I have to change them a little bit because of customization and changes through the years. Anyone an oldschooler with some info? I know this question is quite rare, and I guess I could…

I have recent acquired a DVD burner, recently only that it has specific system requirements. Is this for real? I tried it anyway just incase, and I see it crashes all the time...so... 1.4 ghz Athlon AMD 512 DDR ram 40gb Hard drive I set it as the master and my CD burner as slave, I am not to good with hardware but I believe that is at least correct. Are there burners that don't require high specs, because I only that above. I looked around and it seems like most burners do not come with any requirements, but who knows...I thought the same with this one as well. I am totally lost as to how this can be, I can't even play DVD's with it.

Okay, so about a week ago I was on my computer and it drastically slowed down. It was taking around 5 minutes to even open up Firefox. So I restart it - except it was taking so long to restart that I got frustrated, so I just manually turned off power. When I turned it back on and told it to load Windows (I have a partitioned hard drive with a SWAP partition, Windows on hd0, and Ubuntu Linux on hd1), it gave me the BSoD. It cited this error message: "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME," specifically "STOP 0X000000ED (0X81B53C98, 0XC000009C, 0X00000000, 0X00000000." When I tried to load Windows in any form of safe mode (after a restart), it stopped loading at multi(0)disk(0)…

hey, Im having issues with my computer on the network im on. for some reason the administrator believes my computer is trying to shutdown the network im on. They said to do a virus scan, which I did. I found nothing. I also have a firewall active. I often share my hard drives over the network, which people often use (could the large amount of people on my computer give the impression of supposedly attacking the network?) and another thing is I also remote desktop connection my computer from the labs to the college alot. Whether this might do it.... So I really have no idea whats going on? any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanx Ice_phoenix87

Klaynos will enjoy that. However I am now stuck with a problem, thankfully my impatience stopped windows short of destroying everything. Basically it decided all the security id's were wrong and went about setting them to default values in the check disk deely while it boots. Ive googled it, and there are fixes to prevent windows doing it again but not to cycle back all the security ids. Now there is no start menu i have to use task manager to switch between windows, and i cant copy and paste anything or listen to anything (the sound card(s) doesnt exist anymore aparantly). Any ideas to solve this? (Other than formatting and installing linux; I WILL g…

I've been thinking about getting a Mac, but I'm wondering what computer software is compatible with the OS. I know you can download some patch or software that would allow you to install Microsoft based programs such as Word, but are the computer programs or games that you see in a store compatible with the OS as well?

hi all, i have an interesting one here... turned my pc on today like every other day and observed a really weird series of events, unlike anything seen before; first the computer started continuously restarting after which it stopped and a message came up saying something like "scanning hard drive for BIOS image" and below that another message "BIOS auto recovery" and a series of dots that were supposed to be some kind of progress bar I think...then it restarted again and so a few time like that until at once the entire screen was full of those dots and it appeared to be going on forever with last line of dots on the screen moving like a progress bar from left to right,…

i was wondering what to look out for when upgrading processors? I have a socket-A connector (so gotta get a socket-A processor)... I've narrowed down my MOBO to something very similar to this (it's model number is one off), which can take AMD thunderbirds up to 1.4G (which is what i have my eye on... dirt cheap on ebay). i'm not too sure about the front-side-bus thing... if i buy a processor designed for a FSB of 266MHz, and my FSB is only actually 200MHz, what'll happen? will the processor just go slower, or will my FSB explode? any other annoying little things i have to look out for when chosing a processor?
