Discussion of computer problems

  1. Started by Mokele,

Ok, so, background: A few months ago, my computer had a major screw-up due to the corruption of some important windows files (Win XP, SP2). I managed to fix it, but in the process, one of my programs (CorelDraw) stopped working, but in a weird way. So, here's the issue: I cannot open this program from the exe - windows starts trying to do some install process and asks for the CD, which I've lost. But, oddly enough, if I double-click on a file type associate with the program, it opens immediately. No problems, no errors, it does everything it's supposed to. My intuition says Windows is having the problem, not the program, but I have no idea how to fix it. Any …

Alright, so I have this new concept for building a new computer, which is not only put multiple processors, but also multiple motherboards. I'm saving up for the parts of a new computer right now, so I am wondering if it is possible to synchronize two motherboards together. I want to do this to see if it will help improve performance (like faster speed, etc.). If it was possible, would it yield any significant advantage over having one motherboard?

Hey, I just got an old server from my mom's work that I would like to turn into a media center. Right now it only has 512 MB RAM, so I would like to add more. On sites like newegg I see that they sell "server RAM" as opposed to just normal RAM. Is there something about it that makes it special, or could I use any RAM that has the right pin configuration. I've done some searches and can't find what the difference is. Thanks

  6. This works best with xp, but can be done in Vista as well. But in vista it just makes it look alot less shinny, where in xp you can hardly notice the difference! okay first you need to right click on my computer -> select properies Then scroll down and tick the boxes so yours looks like mine, leave the last box unchecked for extra performance boost, however it'll make your display look like your in windows 98 ( so only do it if your pc is really struggeling or you somehow find that look attractive! ) note: really wasn't sure where to put this, if I failed, mods feel free to bash me with your sticks.

Hallo, I often use the saved passwords of my Firefox browser to see and sometimes erase the passwords...only everytime I must go to Tools - Options - Safety - saved password. I was arguing if there is a way to insert a link in the toolbar to simplify and speed up this task. Thank you and hallo to everyone. __________________ Risk a virus to click special gifts on these? I've gone through several wireless routers, from CompUSA brand to LinkSys and I can't seem to find a relatively trouble free router. What is the freakin' deal? We have 3 PC's in the house - my PC is the only one with a direct ethernet connection, the other two are wireless. Every two or three days I'm having to restart it because the router freezes, or wireless connection speeds are crawling, or won't let my son connect at all. Security is a pain in the ass because I have to set all of this crap up, over and over again. And this has been the case with every wireless router I've owned. I'm not doing anything out of the ordinary. I connect to my DSL via pppo…

Hi (again). I set up a home network (wired) a wile back just so that my siblings and i could have access to the internet. Now that component works fine but i also want to be able to share files. I made all the 'work groups' on the Pc's the same and that has sort of worked in that the Pc's pick each other up, however when i click on my mothers 'shared folders' file (from my Pc) it gives me the error "Access denied... you might not have permission "etc I have tried turning off the firewall on my mothers Pc but still nothing !! Any help appreciated !! P.s From my mothers Pc i can access my 'shared folders'. P.p.s I have Xp Sp 3 on all Pc.

  10. Is there any way to modify or delete a 'user variable' on XP Pro without login to the account? The story is this. I got a laptop repaired but the OS (together with defective speaker and audio board) was re-installed. The problem is the Windows was installed with a username which I would like to replace. Doing through Control Panel-> User Account was successful. However, %USERPROFILE% and %HOMEPATH% still point to the wrong folder. I managed to modify %HOMEPATH% through "Local Users and Groups" -> Users, but %USERPROFILE% remained not pointing to the new folder under C:\Documents and Settings. Then I decided to add USERPROFILE in 'user variable' to override t…

I have a motherboard that doesnt suport SATA so i have a PCI card that alows me to plug a SATA hard drive in it. The card seems to be working properly (in the device manager) and the hard drive is picked up in the device manager(under the heading "disk drives") but i dont know how to access it. It isnt listed in my computer. I read through the manual and all it explains is how to install the card.

I formatted my PC due to a virus problem and re-installed windows. I however only later realised that I don’t have the drivers CD that comes with the PC. I have an AMD CPU and a NVIDIA graphics card. I was able to download (from another PC) the drivers for the Graphics card because I knew the make and model. I went to the AMD website and downloaded several driver packs but none of them worked all giving me the error code “No AMD components Found”. Can anyone please help me? I need the drivers for the motherboard etc. Is there a program that can analyse what drivers I need? Thanx P.s I really don’t know what to do now. At the moment my Ethernet port doesn’t work …

  13. Two problems. I put 4 GB of RAM (total) in my friend's XP Media Center Edition, but it's only showing 2.93 in the system properties. It originally had two 512 MB RAM out of 4 available slots, until I replaced them with four 1 GB sticks. Also, he often manipulates about 15-20 very high resolution vector images, moving/resizing/etc, which usually slows the computer -- for example, it takes 2 minutes of hourglass to copy and paste them as a group. And I'd have thought going from 1 GB to 4 GB RAM would've sped up this process. But nope. So I want to try a few things. First, double-checking the RAM info in the BIOS, in case Windows is just being inaccurate.…

  16. Hi, I'm trying to copy a full folder from one location to another. I've tried using the function described in the top comment of http://us.php.net/copy but i keep getting permission error. I tried creating the destination folder in advance - still no permissions. I tried giving the destination folder permission 777 , and still no permissions. I've verified that the php files of the script are executable, but still not working. Advice, anyone? Scripts do taht all the time, specifically in CMS system installations - where an upload creates a new folder. What do i doooo?

Hey guys, I have a probably-silly question, but it's annoying the crap out of me. I'm reading through a config file that has the construct of: var $lala = "value"; var $lilili = "second value"; I want to read through this file line by line and output it to a second line with different values. It's really not a problem, I'm doing it already, my only problem is that whenever I want to read whether or not there's "$lala", the script seems to treat this as the inner VARIABLE $lala instead of just a text string, and since this isn't a variable in my script it returns null. Same happens when I try to output the string, IE I try to write into the…

Ran into this bit of weirdness earlier today and I know there's a lot of FF users here so I thought I'd pass it along. It's easy to accidentally add a misspelled word to Firefox's dictionary with that right-click menu, but getting that bad word out of there is a bit of a nuisance. Here's how you do it: Open the following location on your hard drive, where "xxxxx" is the random number given for that folder (might be easier to open the folder above this location -- there's only one folder inside, and it will be the one listed below): Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[user Name]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\ Windows Vista: …

Hey all, I'm not entirely sure this is the right section for this, since technically speaking an iPod isn't a computer, so mods please feel free to move if necessary. I got an iPod Shuffle about 2-3 years ago, and it worked fine until last summer. I was going over to my friends house listening along the way without any problems, however upon my departure a couple of hours later it would no longer function. What happens when I turn it on is the "status light" (not the battery one in the back, the one above the controls) glows green for about 5 seconds like it always does when I turn the iPod on. Then the light switches off, which normally means that I can start usi…

  25. Started by Royston,

I was halfway through typing up my assignment last night (these things tend to happen when there's a deadline), and my pc blue screened on me. I rebooted, and before it finished scanning the drives, it blue screened again...this continued to happen. So I opened it up, resat the memory et.c, checked everything was properly connected, and gave it a clean. Started it up, and managed to get into windows (XP), however a few corrupt files were found when the drives were scanned. Most of my applications on my desktop are now not accessible via the shortcuts. What happened, is the first programme that wasn't recognised (being my wi fi card) when I got back into windows,…
