  1. I've got one of those portable a/c's that has a water collection reservoir (holds about 2 qt.) where all the humidity it pulls out of the air goes. This thing pulls a ton of humidity out of the air and me living in Florida doesn't help. I can literally empty it every couple hours and if it doesn't get completely emptied at least every other day algae starts to grow. I'm wondering what I might be able to use to keep algae from growing inside the a/c without damaging the plastic reservoir the water collects into. Thanks! P.S. - I'm not to lazy to empty the a/c everyday, but this thing weighs over 100lbs and you have to lift it to empty it.

Why are human babies more vulnerable at birth compared with new born of other species? Human babes require constant care and attention all the time yet we are more intelligent than other species. This constant care is required for an extended time (YEARS)!!! Anyone has any hypothesis on this?

Shops and other various teenage hangouts have devised a really god damn annoying way to keep unwanted adolescents away. A high pitched whine audible only to people under 25. There's a link to the sound at the bottom of the article. http://www.bbc.co.uk/wiltshire/content/articles/2006/04/04/mosquito_sound_wave_feature.shtml My ears hurt!

Hello, heres a Q about animal behaviour A few years back I read about an experiment regarding the behaviour of chimpanses living in their natural environment. As far as I remember, one of the chimps were taken out of the group, was dyed pink and then put back into the group again as soon as possible. The result was that the poor creature were chased away or perhaps even killed by its own family and friends. If you can, please tell me more about this or other related experiments. If you happen to know any book titles, I'd be glad to hear about them too. Regards, Michael

I've read that mitochondia is often the cause of aging in humans because they deteriorate faster than our cells. I've heard that's also true in mice, yet humans live 80 years, while mice live just a few. Is our mitochondria that much more robust than a mouse's mitochondria? If that's true, could ours be engineered to last much longer?

  11. I dont know if this is the right section but my idea/question has something to do with evolution so I just stuck it here.. I've been interested in buddhism for about a year and recently I've been thinking about reincarnation. I hope this makes sense.. im not good with words. Does anyone think its possible that over time, advances in evolution constructed a device that could transmit what we call consciousness? I don't really believe that at the moment someone dies waves are tranmitted to some zygote somewhere. I believe in the possibility of some sort of shared consciousness.. does this make sense to anyone??

I was wondering if it is possible to take DNA from a firefly, and inject it into a plant causing the plant to glow with household items. I know that it is possible to make transgenic glowing plants, but I don't know if it can be done with household objects. I'm thinking that somehow i could catch a firefly, grab some DNA, for example, get some of the yellow goo off of their butt, and inject it into the plant cells. If that works correctly, the plant cells would take in the DNA and begin to create the luciferin/luciferace that makes the light. When the oxygen and ATP from the plant cells mixes, it will make the plants glow. I've seen it done before, but I wanted to know if…

  19. There is a 7 week program at UW-Madison in the summer called Summer Science Institute(SSI) that I'm sending an application for. Here's an abstract of something that participants have the chance to do: Genetics/Biotechnology Within this class, you will have two separate options that will be decided by the students during the first week of class. The first option would be to take a look at genes that are "turned on" as a plant develops. The mRNA from plants would be isolated and students would be able to take a look at these genes and determine if the genes are on or off in response to different environmental factors. Students would learn how to isolate RNA…

I have gotten a science project where I am supposed to create a life form that lives on a certain star. I have gotten the white dwarf. I did some research and found out that the star emits a lot of heat. I am having problems creating the life form. Since there is no air or gravity in outer space how will my creature move on the star? Since the star emits a lot of heat what skin, coating, or special features should my creature have to survive from the heat? Lastly is there a way for my creature to get energy from the heat released by the star? Your help is greatly appreciated.

  21. ultralord910 has to make an organism that survives in the white dwarf, I have to make one that survives in the black hole. Can you guys give me any good ideas on how it can move in space when there's no air at all? Should it use a flagellum? (It's an unicellular organism) Also I'm wondering how it can get its energy. Should it convert thermal energy into body energy? How? Or should it just eat others of the same species? Also, I was wondering if quantum tunneling is a good idea for the organism to prevent itself from being sucked into the black hole too much? If not, is there a better idea? Thank you! Please reply! 25. So rods are more sensitive to light, right? Does your brain make up for that by ghosting the part of the image you receive from the center of the eye into subsequent...frames? I ask because I can see black lines and waves in my CRT monitor and TV out of the corner of my eye, but not when I'm looking at them dead on.
