Humans would look practically the same if you put a mirror down the centre of us (as would many other creatures). Why is that? I assume it's something to do with the way the enbryo develops, like clusters of cell for producing a particular organ form and then kind of maybe split into two along an axis resulting in two eyes, two kidneys, two lungs etc. Presumably our two kidneys didn't evolve independently of each other.

Well, we've a mini garden in our terrace. Today, when the man who takes care of the terrace-garden was cleaning the soil in a tub of Allamanda, he got some white egg-like stuff. These eggs were quite small, having almost equal length(of half a thumb). They were 8-9 in number. We broke one of them and found the inner-area to be exactly like an egg. The stuff was hot. The astounding thing is that it was found inside the soil part of tub, I emphasize : inside the soil-part. I don't think a bird will dig such deep in the soil to lay eggs. Is it a work of the snakes? I suspect, one might have entered the tub from the hole under it and laid the damn eggs. Can you please put som…

So I'm pretty sure I have diabetes. I have had many symptoms and if I don't have diabetes I know I'm in the early stages of it. What can I do to prevent type 2 from getting worse or even cure it? I have no health insurance and don't want to see a doctor. What can fasting or a 6 course diet plan do for me? Any other advice?

I was wondering, if a catalase enzyme solution (or an enzyme solution in general) is just left out at room temperature, can that cause the enzyme to not be as effective later on?

So my girlfriend thinks aliens did this to screw with us http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_rain_in_Kerala Anyways from what I get is that although unlikely, this algae was reproducing during rainfalls and spores got into the atmosphere. Anybody care to give ideas as to how it started breeding in clouds?

Hi, I am trying to quantify SA in infected leaf tissue. However, as I am new to this type of work I am a little confused as to the use of an internal standard. I am spiking all my samples with a known amount of pure SA so that I can eliminate variations between injected samples. So, I have two questions: 1) How do I calculate the percentage recovery of my SA from my samples to test how efficient my extraction procedure is? 2) If all my samples (plant extracts) are spiked with pure SA, how is this showing how much SA is produced by the plant following infection - Am I not just measuring the SA that was spiked in? If anyone can help that would be great as I am very confuse…

If someone created a computer/robot that: -could reproduce (produce other computers without human interference) -could pass traits onto its offspring -could maintain its own homeostasis -could grow and develop -had a complex chemistry (complex series of processes allowing it to think and move" -could respond to stimuli in their environment would it ever be considered alive even if it were not made of cells?

Gram staining/Gram positive vs. negative When being a microbiologist, before you give your patient medicine to fight of their bacteria you need to know wether they have gram positive or negative bacteria. You need to know this because most medicines only serve the purpose to either gram negative or positive bacteria, for instiince penicillin does not kill gram negative bacteria. You find wether your patient has gram negative or positive bacteria by doing a gram stain. A gram stain is a Differentiating staining process for bacteria. Once completing the gram stain your gram positive bacteria will be purple , and gram negative bacteria will be pink under the microscope (…

Our subconscious gets constantly affected by the outer environment and since our conscious mind is directed by what our subconscious mind feeds upon. So does this mean we are a result of influences?

Tough question here; First an easy one to get warmed up though... Would there be any benefit to mummification from exposing the body to a CO2 enviroment while it's being dried? I'm confident there would be in theory but how about in the real world where most of rotting is being caused by aneroebic bacteria? If a mummy were produced using such a technique would there be a means to detect it after 4700 years?

I am trying to establish whether humans could ever explore Mercury's surface during daylight periods. Essentially, the issue is how long the crews could be directly exposed to solar radiations before absorbing excessive (cancer-causing) doses of radiation. Solar heat is always noted as a principle threat to humans should they ever go to the surface of Mercury. However, after sunrise, it takes several weeks for the surface temperature to rise to the boiling point of water, set here as an arbitrary limit for crew safety. This suggests crews could have sufficient time to perform surface exploration before temperatures exceed safety limits. The issue here concerns …

Hey guys, my name's Nate (Zirojtan), and this is my first post on these forums. I'm writing an alternate history timeline that concerns a point of departure around 176,000 years ago, and recently I've been looking into the possible extinction of the tsetse as one of the butterflies of the timeline. I don't really know if this is any of your thing our not, so I won't go into a lot of detail about the timeline itself, and just skip ahead to the question I had: is it biologically feasible for a species of trypanosome, specifically one that effects antelope/equids, to evolve to attack the tsetse itself? If so, how would you explain such a mutation and the advant…

If I heat a sample of water with a dangerous microbial contamination (whatever common, dangerous waterborne illness) until it boils the microbes die. My question is why do they die? Is it the microwaves that kill them via radiological effects or is it the heat that does it? (ie the microwaves interacting with the microbes vs the microwaves interacting with the water and the water interacting with the microbes) Could a microwave be built to kill bacteria with low intensity microwaves? Low intensity microwaves which could be generated by power from a hand crank or pedal style generator? If so could microwaves used to sanitize water in developing nations with simple gear lik…

So I'm always hearing that humans are such a young species and that there's probably much more complex life out there in the universe somewhere. I always agreed with that statement and didn't think anything of it until recently.. I thought, there has been life on earth for billions of years now and it's only now that intelligent beings are coming about, meaning that it takes a long time for evolution to figure it out. Give or take a few million years, who knows if any other species could do it much faster? You don't just pop into existence as galaxy roaming super aliens. Chances are that if there is life elsewhere, there are just a bunch of dinosaurs having the time of t…

There may already be an answer here to this question, still looking through all the topics. Why is there male and female, and why is there sexual reproduction? Presumably there must have been some evolutionary advantage over asexual organisms. Any ideas what those advantages may be? thanks GIAN

Ok, So far only one person has believed me and I really want to know what happened so my mom will believe me. Yesterday night I was sitting in the office playing a game when I heard a loud "pop" like something had exploded. I got up took a look around and an Emu egg that has been sitting around our house for the last 6 years had explode a chunky white mess all over the place with out my touching it or even looking at it. I want to know why did it spontaneously explode?

There is a debate as to whether mapping brain connections on the microscale with electron microscopy is a worthy undertaking. I think it will be awesome and comparable to sequencing a genome. Once we map brain connections in diseased brains we can compare them to normal, compare mice to monkeys and eventually to humans in diseased and normal states and young vs old. Does anyone think for example: a project to map the brain of a an ape is worth pouring billions of dollars into; why/not ? Requirements: 1. Faster methods of imaging brain slices with an electron microscope 2. Machine learning computers to trace out all the connections at synapses from those imag…

Know-a-lots on this forum, while i was sitting on my toilet i saw in front of me a tiny long piece of dirt i thought. Suddenly a long tongue/tentacle came out of both ends(never at the same time, left, right, left, etc.) feeling its surroundings looking for food? I can't find anything on the internet about it. I live in North-Holland and i have a bathroom with a toilet. Almost no ventilation. I just returned from Ukrain maybe its from there. I realy want to know what it was. Thanks a lot in advance!
