Increase in light intensity speed up the rate of photosynthesis. Does increase in light intensity also speed up the rate of respiration? I think so, but my teacher never talked about it.

I'm not sure if this should be here or in chemistry (err.. here sounds more true but I don't know, move it if I'm wrong) - but I have a question: I'm sure that other than the physical affects, people who are DRUNK are affected by their psychological state. It's obvious, that's why "completely-drunk-crazy-woozy-people" are usually acting insane in large groups. What I would like to know is what exactly does alcohol does to the body (I don't mean in the long run) and why are the affects so obvious? And also, why is it that when someone is mixing different types of alcohol (as they say) the effects are larger and faster? Is it affecting the brain? if so, how? T…

I would swear that ever since I drove in my cousin's car with the bass turned up way too loud for about an hour, bass has never sounded as loud since. I've heard about going deaf in other frequency ranges, but not deep bass (20-70 hz or so). Is this possible?

What is life? Is it that which reproduces? That which converts energy? That which moves. Why is a tree life, but a rock not? Dying to hear the different definitions. Max

Is it theoretically possible to deliver iRNA by a viral vector to supress a particualr gene? Then presumabably the virus would continue to reproduce, thus maintaining gene supression. If the virus was infectious by nature then the gene supression could spread between a number of hosts or a community. I'd better tell you upfront I'm a science fiction writer brainstorming ideas for a novel. Please contribute ANY ideas, however off-the-wall. Thanks, -Terence

I'd appreciate some opinions on this since it is true and just happened. My wife was in a car accident 3 weeks ago that caused trauma to her right side but didn't break any ribs from ER x-rays. She complained her side was getting worse and had x-rays last Friday and they were still clear. She spit up blood on Tues. and Wed. her X-ray showed pneumonia. Her right lung which was traumatized was full and her left lower lobe was filling. Now they quarantined her this afternoon and said she has severe Tuberculosis. My question is since she may have been exposed to TB in the past like many of us and had large amounts of bacteria encapsulated in her lungs harmlessly, co…

Well, this happens to me once in a while, all of the times at night when I sleep. When I turn at night, it sometimes happens that I get into a position that causes an immense pain, like a cramp, from the knee down to the ankel, at the back of the leg. It also sometimes happens at the soles of my feet. The pain lasts for about an hour, and then starts to decrease. What is causing this? Is it the muscle going into a wrong position or something? Just wondering what was causing it

Hello, I am a new poster here. My chemistry teacher made a strange announcement last lesson. He said that the egg cell is the largest cell. I can agree. But he also said that a single egg is made up of a single cell! One egg of a hen = One egg cell! Is this true? I'm no biology expert, but I'm quite sure egg cells multiply and create eggs. Anyway, how can you fit a chicken inside one cell? Please confirm my suspicion so I can nail him

Hi, I'm growing a monocotyl with a life cycle of only one year, because I have to collect all sorts of different plants (leaves+flowers) over a two year period for a college-assignement. I've been growing it for two months now, after the first month I placed it in a bigger pot that had a different kind of soil in it. Eversince it has gone wrong. The plant virtually stopped growing and is in an worse condition now then a month ago. I've checked almost every possible cause.. Where I live it also grow's in the wild but is very rare (that's why I am growing it myself) so I've been growing it in the same conditions as it's natural habitat (light, water, temperature). This p…

Is it true that if a man is place into a maze and a rat in a scaled version of the maze; and both the human and the rat have gone round the maze only once before; that the rat with complete the maze first as they have a better mapping memory? How can this be? Does it mean that the rat has a larger mapping part of the brain then a human?

So these bananas have been brought home and are green. How do they turn yellow? Don't they need sugar or something to turn yellow? But where does the sugar come from if the bananas are already picked off the tree?

I a guy I know (not me, I'm in math) believes in cel consciousness, which is basically says that cells sort of know what's going on around them & can communicate with each other (to a certain extent). He told a prof about it & the prof said the guy better not tell any other prof about it because it's not 'mainstream' or something. What does everyone think of cell consciousness?

hi all,my very first post here, hope you enjoy it New discoveries about the rules governing how genes encode proteins have revealed nature's sophisticated "programming" for protecting life from catastrophic errors while accelerating evolution http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?chanID=sa006&colID=1&articleID=0002F40E-3D61-1056-BD6183414B7F0104

Hi all, I'm a member of the editorial team of OBBeC.Com magazine (http://www.obbec.com) which covers the subject of life science computing and healthcare informatics. I came accross lots of debates about the exact meaning of Bioinformatics and the differences between bioinformatics, computational biology, biocomputing ...etc. Just for my personal interest, I would like to know what do you believe bioinformatics is? is there any difference between bioinformatics and the other concepts I mentioned above? My personal opinion is that, as a concept, bioinformatics is simply integrating computational technologies with life science applications, which is not a straight f…
