I was fooling around with a 9V battery recently, sticking graphite across the top, but the label said it could explode. How is that? Oh, and one of my teachers said if you ingested the battery acid it would kill you and there's nothing they can do about it. Is that true (I doubt it)?

Hey guys, I have this really cool project that I'm doing in chemistry class. Havin trouble though, please help me out, this is all of the info that I was presented with and must complete a formal lab on it. problem: a concerned environmentalist wants to eliminate nitrous oxides NOx emmssions that occur when gasoline is burned with air. To solve this problem the environmentalists want to burn gas with pure oxygen in his vehicle. Fin the amount of oxygen required for the vehicle to travel 1000 km and the size of the tank compared to the vehicle if the oxygen is stored at STP. thanks a lot all, MEET

A component in a car suspension system is subjected to a tensile force of 20kN. The component is manufatured from a hollow steel tube of externel dia 25mm and wall thickness of 4mm. The modulus of elasticity (E) for the steel is 209 GN/m squared. a/ calculate the cross-sectional area of the component in mm b/ calculate the direct stress on the component in MN/m squared c/ find the direct strain on the component. d/ if the component is 30cm long calculate the change in length of the component under the applied load. give answer in mm. e/ if the yield strength of the material is 420MN/m squared, calculate the factor of safety for the component. Could someone ple…

Figure I'd try and get some healthy discussion going on around here... What is an aspect of science--be it an institution, practice, methodology, etc-- you feel is currently bad for either the public or the scientific community as a whole, and how would you propose to fix it?

what mechanism is at work when we like or dislike a peice of music on the first time of hearing it? I say the 1`st time of hearing to escape the problem of association with pleasurable or displeasureable events that we may link unconsciously to a particular peice of music. and I`de also like to exclude Video images too. you`re just sitting down and hearing a new song/instrumental for the 1`st time on the radio, your not particulary happy or sad. but you`ll either like the track, not like it, or are indifferent towards it. what govorns this response in us?

this either belongs in here or pseusdoscience, having said that, I`ll give it a shot here, if it degrades I`ll shift it. I had an idea several years while playing guitar, occasionaly is worth going up to the speakers really close with the pickup heads to get a neat feedback sound that would alter with the distance of movement you made closer or further away from the speakes, it could really make some note almost "sing". I was wondering if a similar setup could be used to amplify brainwave EM emissions, sure they`re only tiny, but you`de only need amplitude modulation to pass the signal Imagine an EM pump in the center of a room and in each corner a pickup coi…

I've been looking at iron filing pictures all day, trying to figure out what is pushing/pulling the magnets around, how it works, how photons are supposed to be involved. It's hard to envisage the shape from those iron filings. Anyone know of 3D pictures of the fields? Or a 3D generator of fields. Pincho.

There are 10 proven dimensions mathematically. Can anyone visualize a fourth dimension? Is the reason why we can't visualize a fourth dimension that we live in a three dimensional world? How different do animals see the world? (Axis-wise x,y,z). There's a saying "a triangle would have a god with three sides" we visualize a god in 3d, how can every dimension have a god?!

I`ve been making Garlic Butter for years, it consists of a kilo of butter, 200 grams of sharp(mature) cheese, 20 grams of raw garlic cloves, 2 T spoons of marjoram and 2 T spoons of English mustard, with a medium sized grated onion (all measures are roughly accurate). now for some reason, this butter lasts for MONTHS! and only seems to improve over time, I`ve never had a batch go bad! 4 months was the longest I know to it being kept before being eaten and that was 100% ok too (normaly because it tastes so nice it never lasts more than a few days!). now any single one of these ingredients would go bad after the 4 months, with the exception of the dried marjoram. …

I am trying to make some world maps on how the world was in prehistoric times like Triassic and Jurassic, etc. I have found a couple of maps which shows where the continents were at lots of different times, but none of them shows much about how the climate was in the different areas during those times. Does anyone have any good links or information that tells how the climate was around the world (hundreds of) millions of years ago?

Hi, I remebered something from a while back that I read in a Dilbert book. Scott adams proposes an alternative theory to gravity, that upon brief thought seems possible, but pretty impossible to prove. Here's an excert: Scott Adams , The Dilbert Future. Can anyone explain why this is not faesible? p.s. apologies for the sorta unformatted quote

due to popular demand and emails about where to obtain this or that chemical from, I present you all with an Idea the next time your in Wallmart or a pharmacy or gardening center or ANY place that sells things (OTC) Over The Counter, that may be of some use. let us know what it is and where personaly I can`t walk into any store and see a new product and NOT at least have a look to see what`s in it I can`t say "keep the lame stuff out of here" as not every one knows whats maybe good or lame, but use your own discretion and lets see if we can`t come up all that you`de need for a reasonable Lab, made from OTC stuff good luck and happy hunting

I`ve been after a good vacuum for a peice of electric aparatus, namely a home made X-Ray tube. I`ve been pondering on a good way to accomplish this and think I`ve found a way ) I made the x-ray tube and had a 4mm glass rod that lead into it, to which the vacuum is applied. well I didn`t have a good enough pump and so I made an alternative, one that MAY help alyone else, and it`ll work if you`re making a light bulb and don`t want the heated elemant to burn out too fast. firstly you`ll need to seal the container you wish to evacuate and have a glass condiut leading from the inside outwards. open up a few Lithium batteries CR-2032 or CR-2016`s extract with a sharp …
