  1. Hello everyone, I just want to know why is the metal core of the earth solid? I'm a begginer and your help would be appreciated.

Some of us may have already independently reached the conclusion that asteroids could be mined for their mineral value. It took a couple of years to finally hit me that such ideas had already been around for more than 30 years. They were of course much more detailed and refined than my lay assumptions and logical inductive reasoning. Now that I've looked for referrences to the mineral exploitation of space I've found that they're everywhere one chooses to look. So why hasn't it happened? We could discuss for pages why the circumstances aren't proper for the emergence of the space mining industry. Instead I'd like to discuss what can be done taking into consideration …

Please see the Discovery article below... http://dsc.discovery.com/news/briefs/20050905/handlight_print.html "Not only the hands, but also the forehead and bottoms of our feet emit photons," Hiramatsu said, and added that in terms of hands "the presence of photons means that our hands are producing light all of the time." The light is invisible to the naked eye, so Hiramatsu and his team used a powerful photon counter to "see"it. The detector found that fingernails release 60 photons, fingers release 40 and the palms are the dimmest of all, with 20 photons measured. The findings are published in the current Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology…

I don't know if this is in the right section, but I've seen some tutorials where they show you how to change your camera into an infrared camera, and if you get a IR flashlight it's really cool. BUT... i've seen some stuff that is even cooler http://sprott.physics.wisc.edu/photos/clint/INFRARED.JPG you get the idea... I was wondering how you could do that, and why the regular infrared cameras are monochrome. I'm pretty good with cameras and i'm aware that you can change the apeture value and stuff to adjust the light intake so you picture could show the red/green/blue stuff like in the image. Any help is appreciated!!!

My physics teacher says that there is such a thing as darkness rays! Is this true?? He says that when you hold a shroud in front of a spotlight, the spotlight emits darkness rays onto the wall in front of it. Isn't this pseudoscience??

I did a search for the word, "Threshold". Apparently there's no thread that discuss about this amazing phenomonal TV show. I love all those science and math TV shows, such as "ReGenesis", and "Numb3rs". They made me more interesting into those areas. Oftenly I would think in school, "Why am I learning this crap?". Let me tell you, nothing is crap, because it can come back to you and you wished that you remember it. You'll just never know when you will need the specific information. A brief overview of Threshold: Broadcasting at 10 PM every friday night on Global. THRESHOLD is a suspenseful drama about a team of experts who are assembled when the U.S. Navy makes a chil…

My music teacher several years ago stated that she could hear the information loss in CDs. She claimed that she could hear an improvement of quality in records over CDs. I have read about CD technology and remember finding that the sampling rate was well above our perception and the same went for bit-depth. Is this really possible or is she most likely just making this up? Also, what is (roughly) the lowest bit-rate required for an mp3 before it becomes impossible to notice the compression? I can notice for 128 but not 160.

Has anyone considered how much of what is usually regarded as science fiction or godlike powers, is a fact or a possibility at our current level of development. Let me take some examples: - Precognition, prophecy, the ability to foresee the future, is often regarded as unachievable but in fact it is the purpose of all science. Without precognition (essentially, nothing more than the knowledge of causal relation) human civilization could not exist since it is required for the simplest tasks such as agriculture. The history of humanity is the history of the expansion of precognition. There is the classic example of the Victorian Englishmen who travel to Darkest Africa a…

I have been having all sorts of problems trying to find the (COR) of various materials. I am specifically interested in materials that can be used in a Newtons Cradle. Steel seems to be the most commonly used and this has a COR of around 0.9 and I was just wondering if glass or something else has a higher value. Diamond may well have a higher (COR) (does it?) but obviously this is too expensive. Any semi precious stones or synthetic precious might be affordable. Matweb doesn't list (COR) as one of its properties which is a shame as this site would be ideal to use. The balls will be about 50mm in size and they will be pulled out about 50mm from the side bef…

Could trash be burned, and then the co2 and ash compressed into diamonds? And then, if it worked, the compression chambers could be made of said diamonds for superior efficiency of compression. I know I must have made a logical flaw. Otherwise someone would have thought of this. It's just so simple.

Just out of curiousity, and I can't seem to find the answer, but if a container of gas was said to be 60 degrees, would every single molecule that makes up the gas be 60 degrees, or would they be, like, 60 degrees divided by the number of molecules that make up the gas, like making a decimal degree that represents each molecule? I hope someone gets what I am trying to say. In a nutshell, does anything that is a certain temperature have molecules that are all that temperature, or does that temperature get divided by the number of molecules that make up the object. Dammit, i can't word it right! Hopefully, one of you understand what I am saying.

The number of tropical cyclones in categories 4 and 5 (the highest two categories) has steadily increased over the last thirty years, the number per five year period doubling in that time. The number of storms and their duration also increased, but I personally didn't find these data as convincing. Whether this is linked to increasing global temperatures is a matter of speculation, and it may be part of a longer term oscillation. In any event, it looks the like the End Is Nigh placard business is set for some solid growth. Number of cats owned owned by crazy old ladies as compared to windspeed, plotted over a thirty year period. Note that while windspeed has remained f…

I can see that most of people here are talking about pulling this and that scientific sources from google. I just don't understand. Don't you think that sounds bitter? I personally don't really use google for scientific info due to the fact that the result out of it doesn't seem to be credible and reliable. My university’s library is a 7 story building open 24 hours with over 10 million books and countless articles you can find in their database and online...which keep me up to date in my field of emphasis and are far more accredited than those from google. Now anyone tells me why should i trust google as a credible source of a particular field of interests?

I would like to introduce the a new theory called ionization sharing. When one thinks of ionization, energy is inputted into an atom to ionize an electron. The lower the orbtials, the higher the ionization energies to kick out the electrons. Within dense chemical plasma, such as would be expected within the earth, ionization energies should drop. The reason this is is because within fluid chemical plasmas the orbitals are overlapping. This means that if an electron is ionized it does not go into isolation, like a vapor plasma, but is absorbed into another orbital. I call this ionization sharing. If an atom is ionized the original electron is no longer in the orbi…
