This is question regarding vision ( illusion) When we swith on a table fan we see in the begining clockwise and anticlockwise movenents. Why is it so? Is it due to persistance of vision? And alo at very high speed we can see the other side as if nothing is there?

Ok, imagine that we have glasses on say 5x magnification and everything we see is proportional to what we see. Now say we put on –5x glasses on and we see things smaller but they are all proportional. How do we know what we see is the actual size? Am I making sense here? Can anyone here understand what I am saying?

Turns out that what caused the computers to malfunction on the space station over the past week was a static surge caused by the unfurling of a new set of solar panels. This according to Russian engineers yesterday (article here).

Hello all, I'm so glad to have found this forum. I'm an evolutionary biologist, in the past I've worked on Cotton phylogeny and Hydra population genetics. I noticed these books at the Borders the other day (The Politically Incorrect Guide to Science, The Politically Incorrect Guide to Darwinism and Intelligent Design and they really disturbed me. They're published by REGNERY PUBLISHING, a publishing house with a conservative political agenda. Normally I don't really pay a lot of attention to politics. But this really bothers me, science should not be filtered through a political sieve. It seems so wrong that science should be hashed like this. Do they really h…

Hi everyone! For a quick science pick-me-up, stick a naked bar of Ivory soap in the microwave for about two minutes (or less). Other brands don't seem to work quite as well as Ivory, but let me know if you find someting interesting! Aurora

I think I`ve Out-Geeked myself today, I`ve bought a Fuel cell powered toy car: http://www.latestbuy.com.au/hracer_hydrogen_car.html now naturally I`m going to be taking this apart and making measurements and tests etc... has anyone here already Got one, or have a fuel cell on its own? do you know if using Methane in place of the Hydrogen will work? I`ll probably have a quite a few questions to post in here later when I get the thing and strip it down.

We have a bit of a water crisis developing here in Australia, and I had this idea: First, we allow the ocean to naturally flow into a small chamber, above which sits an array of mirrors that redirect and focus sunlight onto the smallest possible area* of the water's surface. The sunlight boils the water at the focal point, releasing steam which is allowed to condense into a collection pipe. Lots of details to work out, but I'm wondering whether (with fine-tuning) this has the potential to generate enough drinking water to make setup worthwhile? I don't expect it would be a great lone source of clean water, but maybe as an efficient top-up system. By its n…

I was just wondering if anybody could direct me to the best scientific websites? Like what are the best websites for microbiology, biology, physics, mathematics, and so no? Specifically I was wanting to view websites that actually teach a person about a subject.

Their education is nonexistant, their methodology laughable, and all of their interpretations wildly distorted by predetermined conclusions. But they put so much effort in to it, and spend most of their time furiously trying to poke holes in established science. Are there any mainstream ideas you guys know about that originated from those people?

I think this is a good place to post this but i may be wrong. I have a small solar panel and a car battery charging off of it (sorry deep cycle) Bu the last time i used it to charge my phone by going from the battery (DC) to a transformer (AC) then to the charger which canges it to dc again. This was horable! it draned the battery compleatly off a small phone battery. Is there a conseritive way to do this most likely from DC to DC. The battery is 85 amp hr at 12 voltes and my phone is 5V DC at 1 amp. how can i do this? also will it matter if the battery changes voltes. it is at 14V mostly but can go to 10 before it is dead.

Please note that this thread is for educational purposes only. Okay so I'm a crazy scientist with crazy ideas. And I have an idea about how to create a perfect sphere using magnets, 300v of electricity through a transformer, a rotating servo at 30RPS or more with a remote control, and the following compounds; Magnesium Sulfate Water Iron My question is, would any of these chemicals be able to become flammable, and would it be able to cause harm to anything such as humans, animals, computers or whatever it may be. My second question is, what is the outcome of MgSO4.7H2O+H2O+Fe=? Thanks! If anyone would like to see the schematics of my crazy …

I'm sure this has been a subject debated to death in the past, and that I'm adding nothing new to the conversation, however there is one little point I'd like to get across. This is a point about which I feel very strongly. Most of you have probably heard of Ray Kurweil and his arguments about accelerating returns in technology, specifically computer science. Supposedly, this will eventually lead to "singularity" of technological progression in the 21st Century. The exponetial graph eventually goes "straight up". Even the most wildly optimistic transhumanists often assume that the majority of (economically feasible) computers in the world need to be operatin…

Hey guys, I am trying to get a straight answer on this but can’t seem to find one. Would a solar panel absorb light reflected from a mirror? What I am saying is illustrated below Grey = mirrors Yellow = Sun and suns energy Black= Light blocking device Green = Solar panel In this silly little diagram would energy be transferred to the solar panal or is that incorrect?

Earlier this week DARPA and Boeing issued press releases announcing a joint venture to produce navigation systems that do not rely solely on GPS satellites for determining position. The system will use everything from cellular to television, grabbing on to whatever it can find and then (presumably) searching its coordinate database to see if it can recognize the signals it receives, then work out a position based on what it finds. Press release: http://www.boeing.com/news/releases/2007/q2/070418c_nr.html News Story: http://www.gizmag.com/go/7140/ Gotta love the initials. Kinda thwarts anyone asking when it will be ready.

hm the other thread on this subject got far to heated for any meaningful information to be gleaned from the thread. However the thread also had some interesting ideas in it which I think are worth a closer look at. Just to reiterate some of the points from theprevious thread which seemed to have gotten garballed. Peakoilman stated that Geologists had predicted the peak of American oil production in the 1970's, this prediction came true. Also he stated that a number of oil companies/geologists are predicting that oil, and coal are about to peak and or hve peaked in the majority of the world. I am very interested in 2 things happening in this thread. …

I have been reading some things about the geological column and fossils and am interested in evolutionists' responses. First, why is the geological column presented in textbooks as an definite thing when it does not appear to actually exist anywhere in the world? That is, except for a claim by one site on the Internet, http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/geocolumn/ Is this generally accepted to be true information? If so, I do not understand how his various layers have any relation whatsoever to the age of the layers listed in tables. He seems to be saying that each layer is made up of different types of materials. If this is correct, then how do we know how old each laye…

In the debate about our origins the crucial question is: What is the simplest thing (system or process) that needs intelligence to exist or to operate? If we can answer this question, then we can conclude that all things that are more complicated than that, must have been created by an intelligence. I claim that the simplest thing is a thermodynamic cycle process (now please forgive my english, since I am not native English speaker and my terms may vary...) that goes through two points. Example Carnot process without transfer of heat, leaving only two adiabatic processes. I cant give mathematical prove of this and can only say that this has been proved experimenta…

nothing has had the same affect on me as the mechanics of nuclear reactions. its almost a scared but respectful state of awe. even to drive past a plant, you look and think about the kind of power that is being harnessed and controlled. its one of those things that makes you go silent and you just stare. with a million things running through your mind, and at the same time nothing running through your mind. a feeling that nothing else can produce. like seeing a vial of smallpox in containment or something. Ive also always been amzed with Ebola virus and Smallpox. its inexplicable. there are no words... nuclear fission and "dark biology"
