Discussion of science topics that don't fit under any other category.

I was reading this article about the Kwok brothers in Hong Kong building a full-scale ark as an amusement park/hotel. I don't want to talk about the ark. I don't want to talk about the biblical story. And I don't want to talk about why the Kwok's think it's a good idea to build it in Hong Kong's harbor. What I want to talk about is this: The science proved too difficult?! I knew as soon as I read this that there is a group I know who would take up this challenge. So how would you do it, make a rainbow that could be turned on and off as an attraction at a theme park? Permanent doesn't mean it has to be on 24/7, just that it has to be in a single location…

I was wondering if we have the ability to transfer heat and light from the sun through energy absorbing techniques back to the earth? If so, why have'nt their been any satellite crafts doing this? I was thinking of possibly using radiowaves and then converting that back to energy for a possible power generating force. Just a layman thinking of stupid stuff. Thanks for any repiles.

  4. Hypothetically of course, but if there was some medical breakthrough that allowed one to live for tens of thousands of years (if not forever) what effects would it have on the human brain that has evolved to live only a hundred years or so?

Why do people call electronic devices or electrical devices radio frequency or part of the spectrum when it is not Radio,Microwave,Infrared,Visible, Ultraviolet,X-rays ,Gamma rays. I know every electronic devices when turn on or electrical devices when turn on have Electromagnetic field or any electric current have a Electromagnetic field . I know if the electromagnetic field is strong it can cause interference. That is why some times radios get interference from power lines ,cell towers ,electric saw if the electromagnetic field is strong.Any electronic devices or electrical devices cause interference if the electromagnetic field is strong. But can EMF do harm…

  7. I've seen people claiming the oceans will rise 20 feet if Antarctica melts. Why then, with the seasonal melting of half the continent, do sea levels not rise and fall every year by 20 feet? I think the answer has something to do with the ice already being in the water so when it melts the level is still the same, but then what other is global warming melting? I thought so far it is just that less and less ice is refreezing, which would mean that it has not changed sea levels at all yet. How could it change sea levels?

  9. Can a sophisticated individual rise above ideology? All thought is saturated with egocentric and sociocentric presuppositions. That is, all thought contains highly motivating bias centered in the self or in ideologies such as political, religious, and economic theories. Some individuals are conscious of these internal forces but most people are not. Those individuals who are conscious of these biases within their thinking can try to rid their judgments of that influence. Those who are not conscious, or little conscious of such bias, are bound to display a significant degree of irrational tendencies in their judgments. An intellectual might be properly def…

  10. How did we grow from Egalitarianism to Plutocracy? Bands of 5 to about 80 individuals generally comprised the social grouping in primitive human societies. We find this sort of social grouping presently in our closest non human relatives such as gorillas and chimpanzees. These human groups were normally “egalitarian” in structure in that there would ordinarily be a leader who was often followed but each member fit into a structure within that society wherein each member maintained equality with respect to social, political, and economic rights and privileges. These bands slowly morphed into tribal structures, which typically contained hundreds of individuals. T…

Science and the bible don't seem to go very well together ... for most people at least. The bible starts off by saying the earth was created in 7 Days ? while Science says it took billions of years ... I'm Christian but i also believe Science is True "If the bibles says apples when dropped will fly upwards, But if you drop the apple you see it falls downwards for you ... BUT people on the other side of the world the apple in fact does fly upwards ~ so both are true then right?" So i was think about this 7 days and 16 billions years how can both be true? well since time is different in space then it is on earth, could it be possible that time for the lord is differen…

Hello all... My story is very complicated, I'm a quite disturbed individual... See, when I read an interesting article in a newspaper or a pop-science journal I immediatly get melancholic and depressed about the fact that I can't get all the knwoledge in the world. Socrates pretty much summed it up by saying that the more he learned, the more he realized how little he knew... I know that I will never be able to know EVERYTHING, but I would like to die trying. For this, I need to know what areas of knwoledge humans developed over thousand of years. I'm talking about everything from religious studies to arts and literature... Wikipedia has those "portals" on many…

Hi, I'm new around here, done some reading but it's always better to ask. I've been playing around with Electrolysis as it's interesting, (why else would someone does it, lol ) I setup my solution which is water plus salt and then used copper probes. I got a black slugged which I've now filtered and allowing to dry on a plain of glass, what is this stuff? Copper hydroxide? Copper chloride? Are something completely different? Thanks for any feed back. Also on a side note I was reading about making copper sulphate using sulfuic acid, could you make sulfuric acid by adding sulfur to water? I'm buying som copper sulphate off ebay very cheep. …

I recently read an article: The Deepest Hole by Alan Bellows, discussing the Kola Superdeep Bore Hole project. The article states.. "Another unexpected find was a menagerie of microscopic fossils as deep as 6.7 kilometers below the surface. Twenty-four distinct species of plankton microfossils were found, and they were discovered to have carbon and nitrogen coverings rather than the typical limestone or silica. Despite the harsh environment of heat and pressure, the microscopic remains were remarkably intact". How is this possible?

Water is essential for the survival of all known forms of life. The human body is anywhere from 55% to 78% water depending on body size. To function properly, the body requires between one and seven liters of water per day to avoid dehydration All known forms of life depend on water. Because of overpopulation, mass consumption, misuse, and water pollution, the availability of drinking water per capita is inadequate and shrinking as of the year 2006. 40% of America's rivers are too polluted for fishing, swimming, or aquatic life. Even worse are America's lakes—46% are too polluted for fishing, swimming, or aquatic life. 1.2 trillion gallons of untreated sewage, stor…

I have always taken an optimistic view of the future for humanity. A discussion I was in a little while ago included people who argued that resource depletion would slow or reverse progress. An example given was the shortage of platinum as a catalyst for vital processes, such as hydrogen fuel cells. My view has been that human ingenuity can overcome most problems, by finding alternatives. Thus I was most interested to find that, not only can Platinum in fuel cells be replaced, but can be done so with an alternative that is four times better. http://www.rsc.org/chemistryworld/News/2009/February/05020902.asp Carbon nanotubes that are doped with nitrogen can …

I hope I'm posting this in the right section. This was inspired by this other thread, but I think it needs to be its own thread since the course that other thread seems to be going is away from my question. What are the current problems surrounding nuclear fusion and fission as alternate energy sources? From what I understand (and I forget how I understand this), fission is messy as it leaves a lot of toxic waste behind. The problem with fusion, as I understand it (which, again, isn't saying much) is that there's no practically efficient technology to implement it. How true are these assumptions and how promising does road to solutions look? What other problem…

It is nothing really exceptional, except that it has come to the attention of a number of news outlets. If you recall, recently there the Nobel price in chemistry was given to researchers involved in the development of GFP as a major tool in biochemistry and molecular biology. Interestingly the guy who first cloned it was left out. Instead of getting the Nobel he is a courtesy van driver. Why so? The article gives a nice spin on academic careers with a focus on Douglas Prasher, the guy who did the cloning. http://sciencecareers.sciencemag.org/career_magazine/previous_issues/articles/2009_02_13/caredit.a0900021 As I mentioned, these kind of things (though usually…

  23. As on previous threads im running with the same theme the use of spectral enhancement and parabolics . If we were to dispense with winter light shortage or defecit and use spectral space enhancement by prismaic magnification we could certainly have the G.M.T. light realignment and reduce energy and allow further production of food , we could in effect control the weather . The use of refraction and prisms in space and parabolic reflector could be used to illiminate light deprevation if we were to shift the water across to were it is needed then the less productive areas of the globe could become more self sufficient in energy and food production we could theoretically …
