  3. Would it likely be possible, if eventually as technology has advanced enough, that a human could turn his/herself into pure energy, and maintain consciousness and sentience, so as to be invulnerable to all or most of the dangers in the universe. As we understand it, our consciousness is a product of the electrochemical signaling between neurons. Now if we replaced each neuron, one at a time, with a non-organic human-made neuron that performs the same action, the data from the old neuron is always stored in multiple places in the brain, correct? So as we take one out at a time, replacing it with a man-made neuron, would our consciousness (who we are) remain the…

Hi: I'm looking for a part of the United States of America which best fits all of the following: 1. Least amount of wind 2. Furthest from the sea 3. Coldest temperature 4. Most humidity and water 5. Most flatland -- i.e. little or no mountain or hill. Which part of USA most closely fits my dream? I'd like to live in this area. Any assistance on this matter is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Green Xenon

  5. Anyone here have an interest in the subject, or are experts in this field? I've had an interest in the creation of "Strong AI" for quite a while, and kept up with the research that is going on with it. Mind you, when I mean Strong AI, I mean computers that can actually think and have consciousness. There is some very interesting stuff and research going on in this field. In a show on Discovery Channel that I saw about 2 years ago, they described the various experiments going on in Japan and in MIT concerned with programming a computer to be sentient. Particularly in Japan, they are trying to program machines that have a genuine personality and emotions. In M…

  7. I once read about a certain mineral deposit, I believe somewhere in France, the molecular grid of which was influenced by the earth's magnetic fields at the time the mineral was formed. Because of this it was useful in paleomagnetism, as one could know from the age of the mineral where the earth's magnetic north was at that time. Unfortunately, I've forgotten how these deposits were called, and how the mineral in question was called. Anyone know what I'm talking about, or, if not, does anyone know how to find this information on Google, ie, which keywords to use? I've tried a couple, but didn't find anything about this subject.

  9. Sources on the Internet say that the lowest air temperature recorded on earth is in Vostok station in Antarctica: −89.2 °C was recorded there. The −89.2 °C was recorded in Vostok station which is at an elevation of 3,488meters above sea level. However I'm not really sure that's the lowest temperature in the troposphere since at the top of the troposphere temperature may be even lower. My question is: Does anyone know what the lowest temperature recorded in the top of the troposphere or in the tropopause is?

  12. Hey, out of interest, does anyone know of any science- related contests/ competitions (particularly in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, invention or general sciences(theoretical and experimental)) that a Canadian high school student can participate in? (Whether national or international (or municipal, if it's one of the larger cities ie. Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver) While I have specified some of my preferences I'm pretty open to anything that can be found. Thanks in advance, -theo ps: Age isn't an issue either, as I only begin next year, so I'm open to a rather broad spectrum.

Do you have any favourite science documentaries? It's your chance to promote your favourites, and it would be very helpful to me as well. I'm in the mood for a few good documentaries in any area of science to keep me entertained after work. I know that people on these forums would know which documentaries to watch and which are to watch out for. That is my main reason for asking. I don't want to accidentally watch something that will brainwash me into believing lies or seeing only half of the story. Thank you!

What's the maximum height a mountain can be on Earth? Mountain height is a combination of geologic forces reduced by gravity and erosion. No, say we have an early Mars-like world with just enough mass and water to develop plate tectonics, but not enough water to erode the mountains too quickly. How tall can they get? ten miles? thirty miles? etc.

  22. (Please note that I start this discussion a month before I start an undergraduate degree in the sciences. I don't purport to be an expert in anything I'm talking about here.) (people with no attention span should skip to that one-line paragraph down below) Recently I received access, via the University of Texas library system, to hundreds of online journals. I can look up journal articles in pretty much any subject I please, trying to find good information and answers to my questions. I think this is fantastic: online journals make accessing the information far easier and let ordinary undergrads like me learn about research done by pretty much anybody. That's …

When you learn a new concept, such as Einstein's theory of relativity, sleep on it. After initially reading or being told about whatever it is that you're learning, go home, fall asleep, and then dwell on the matter at hand upon waking up. Many great scientists have reported using this technique. The idea is that the newly found knowledge simply marinades, making it easier to understand and in turn allowing more to be learned from it. Just dwell on something and sleep on it a few times. YOU'LL GET IT EVENTUALLY.

  25. Hi everyone, DFG Science TV, the online television channel provided by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation), is back with a second series: http://dfg-science-tv.de/en After a successful first series in 2008, scientists and researchers take to the camera themselves once again to document and explain the work they do - including exciting research projects in Germany, China and Siberia in many different fields: paleontology, geology, biochemistry, biology, engineering and others. Apart from the main target audience - young internet users- the shorts on DFG Science TV also make it possible for teachers, media experts …
