I'm currently using this simple circuit to power an organic LED that I want driving at constant current, using a 330 ohm resistor (so I supply 0.2mA) putting the OLED in the position of RL Now if I want to be able to change the current, I suppose I can just put a variable resistor in there, but what I really want to do is to have a single control that allows me to change the current for a whole load of these circuits with OLEDs in them. I guess I could just put the OLEDs in series, but as I am testing devices, if they're in series and one goes, then they all go and my experiment is ruined. Does anyone know how I might construct such a circuit?

I am a PhD student and am wondering if there are good publications not relating my direct field of study that are targeted at scientists who aren't experts in a specific field. That is to say, I am looking for leisure-time science reading material that is targeted at people who know lots of math and understand science rather than at the general public. I'm not really too fussy about what sort of science or math I'm reading about. Any suggestions?

Would it be possible to harness the energy from a lightning strike? I guess if we could, fossil fuel would become obsolete. Couldn't cosmic rays, aurora, tornado's and hurricanes also theoretically be used as a source of energy?

Those readers who routinely read research journals for their studies or work will be aware of the sub-text that is sometimes present. Such sub-text may subtly question current paradigms, or be a veiled attack on other researchers, or hint at deeper implications of the research, or place caveats on the findings of the paper. Perhaps the most famous example is Darwin’s single line in On the Origin of Species: “Much light will be thrown on the origin of man and his history.” That is not so much a tangled bank, as the seeds of a tangled web whose tendrils still extend today towards the light. What started me on this line of thought was stumbling on this brill…

Hi everyone, I'm doing aresearch project on the public understanding of science. I'd like to knowwhat you think constitutes a true scientific study. What aspects of a studymake it scientific? Which topics countas true sciences from the following category and why? anthropology, biology, chemistry, economics, math, physics, political science, psychologyphilosophy, sociology, statistics (include any others I've forgotten) Any comments arehelpful, even sarcastic ones pointing out previous posts that covered thistopic. Thanks

What are the newest most innovative ways that we are conserving and harvesting energy right now? Do you have any ideas as for new ways to harvest energy? Is it possible that other forms of energy could be more efficient than kinetic?

The Avogadro Constant states that any constriction on all of the particles that make up a whole is a constriction to the whole itself. For example, if each particle of a ball couldn't travel faster than 35 miles per hour the ball itself would be limited to 35 miles per hour. A perception can not find evidence of a world around it outside of it's own perception. For example, let's say you used a machine to tell you that a world was there. The only thing you really have is your perception of a machine telling you that. Now apply the two. On one hand you have the Avogadro Constant and on the other you have the perceptions particle constriction. This means that p…

  9. In order to get my question , first read this please, So it means that when the sound is produced from nails on the chalkboard, the frequency range of this sound is between 2,000HZ to 4,000HZ with the amplitude of the sound is mostly a noise and human ears are designed to amplify this range of frequency, which is why the sound is unpleasant to our ears ? Am i right ? If that is true, and every human has its ear designed to amplify sound ranges from 2,000Hz to 4000Hz frequency then why such sound isn't unpleasant to everyone ? Does it mean that not every ear is capable of amplify these frequency or every ear is trained to amplify the range of the frequen…

I was watching star trek movie and in it there was group of students who were answering to mathematics sums of high end mathematics questions without refering to rough calculations nor to any arithmetic calci. So do such high end brains exists which solve mathematics without solving? Human brains as a cultured medium for solving mathematics without use of analytical skills! The movie even suggests that mathematics was a subject of space race!???

I am currently designing a project and the only thing stopping my idea from working is magnets interfering with other magnets. Is there some sort of material that i can use to put between the magnets (along with other parts of the project) so that the magnetic fields that pass through are much weaker.

When a person moves to a new area they, from the start, begin to assimilate the local accent, seemingly subconsciously. Yet to the locals the original accent is, generally, still very strong, however if said person returns home they often sound like a ‘native’ of the region they’ve moved to. I assume it’s a social imperative of sorts but why isn’t the process more complete? The person enters a sort of half way house neither one nor the other, the social fit is incomplete and therefore, in some respects, counterproductive as he/she is markedly different, both, in the new and the old social groups.

I'm reading some bits of history about the Cold War and I'm finding some things confusing. There are repeated instances where a communism vs capitalism rhetoric is invoked and where decisions were made on such grounds (for ex. when N Korea invaded S Korea and the UN Security Council was convened USSR didn't attend because China was not admitted into the council (or UN?) because they were communist). I don't understand this, how could a country be hostile to another country because they have a different economic system? Is it because of the mistreatment that communist countries subjected their people to? But that kind of oppression surely isn't necessarily part of …

Is there anybody who is interested in discussing the Global Brain idea? I am surprised not to see a discussion here, considering that this is one of the most important developments in the history of mankind. Or maybe there was a discussion here already and I missed it? See this: http://pespmc1.vub.ac.be/SUPORGLI.html A Russian billionaire has just given 5 million to a university, in order to set up the first academic Global Brain Institute. Do you agree with this idea?

  18. Hello, I am looking for a scientific paper that was published a few years ago, but I just can't find it In this paper it was analyzed what the scientific publications had in common that became successful in the past. Those successful publications were separated into maybe five clusters: One cluster included publications that "created" a new field of research. Another one included publications that proofed the mainstream idea in an scientific area to be wrong. Do you have any idea for which further keywords I could search for? Or do you even know this paper?

  20. Oh, I know women do not "present" as do other primates, but psychology researchers have discovered that women in estrus are more attraced to more "sexy" men and are more apt to wear red (which also is more stimulating to men). Also, men do not go through "rut," but to women they "have inflated egos" and compete for "success" (wealth) and hence status. Young women seek out men with status. After that, what human social behavior is not equally instinctive to other primates? Are we really monogamous creatures? Could it be that we love to watch sports teams only because they represent the male hunting team or war party to a species that evolved as hunter/gatherers th…

  21. How do we comare with other nations in corruption? According the highly controversial Corruption Index, we are 7-8 in a 1-10 scale with 10 being the least corrupt. It seems to me that we in the US deceive the system by making corruption legal. In many countries, you bribe to get what you want, but here it is called "campaign contributions," "lobbying," and "deceptive advertising." The corporate world and its lawyer-lobbyists legislate loop-whole laden laws so immorality can become legal.

  24. Started by Royston,

This thread was prompted in part by this...open challenge and that I'm currently working on my dissertation, which has clocked up more than 60 references so far. I've been quite strict in my sources, i.e sticking to what I feel are reputable journals e.g MNRAS (Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society), Astronomy and Astrophysics: a European journal, IOP et.c. My research has branched into (for me) unfamiliar territory such as experimental plasma physics, and simulation software and computational models for astrophysics. I've found that experimental data is harder to access over theoretical work, which is understandable, considering how prolific crack-potter…

  25. I'm not sure where this question goes because it's alittle bit geology, a little bit biology, alittle bit archeology and probably chemistry and other sciences so I'll put it here. It's also dealing with mass murder and genocide so it is necessary not a happy upbeat subject. The basic question is can you hide mass murder? This is why I ask: a friend was in Bosnia during the war back in the 1990s. He says there were tens of thousands of men women and children who murdered and buried in mass graves that the authorities still don't know about. He says some of these graves are huge but the killers have been able to hide them. I don't know if what he says is true but I think th…
