  1. I've been reading a lot about overt and covert prestige from Labov's experiments in the department stores and convergence and divergence from Howard Giles' Communication Accommodation Theory and was just wondering if someone could explain the main difference between the two as they seem very similar. And if you could point out which situations it would be more appropriate to use one as an explanation over the other? Cheers in advance.

Been working on this for a bit. Several leaves preserved in a commercial Glycerin solution(blue). Main idea is to incorporate life-like plants in decorative and functional items. There are a number of pieces out there which incorporate living plants in a similar fashion. Main issue with many of these is the need for regular tending and dealing with any thing wanting to make its home in the plant's "pot". Honestly not sure I've quite figured out what I'm doing. Still have plenty preservative though, so going to keep working on it. If anyone could ID the species, I would be appreciative. Obtained them via clippings from a vine that strayed onto the roadside.

  3. While i was working on a model of space I came up with a new(maybe) Idea that, If Black holes are our Universe.. Let me Explain. Lets think of our universe as somewhere inside a Black hole. our "Big Bang" was an explosion of a huge star(which ended up as the black hole i am talking about). The Black hole keeps on Engulfing stuff getting bigger adding more stuff to our universe.. which might also be the cause of the expansion of our universe.. while i am working on this .. Can this idea be turned into a theory... Also if this could be considered we might change the way we think of origin of Universe as there is already a bigger Universe outside our's ... A parallel unive…

  5. . In the last week or two , I have researched small water disturbances many times , under the influence of wind. This by careful observation, so as to form an explanation for some particular waves on water surfaces. Whether this provides any useful ground work on other wave matters remains to be seen ! But there is a hint of something , reasonably profound ! The area of water ruffled by the wind , appears to be ONE entity .like one Violin string , or one other vibrating entity. So , if this is so, ? the area on the surface only works by dint of the breeze or wind having sufficient energy to start and maintain the " WHOLE " area , patch . Like a whole string or whole …

  7. I was once told quite succinctly that in Aircraft design , Drarfsmen designers often start with drawings defining the many . SOURCE . Leading to :- SINK . Areas of design . In my own area of Electronic design , similar definition points can be specified and circuits often sequentially developed. ( say positive rail flow to ground rail , ....input , process, output , ....etc, etc ) . Could this :- "SOURCE . Leading to :- SINK . ... Principle... ". be of use to other areas of science ? Or is it already established in all areas as an indispensable tool of , " Understanding and Design " Mike

Hi, Animals and humans have consciousness (confirmed)... and nature might too. some say animals got consciousness from plants. but if there's consciousness.... is there something else other than consciousness that would still have the same power or meaning? such as if there was life on other planets, maybe they would not have 'consciousness', but something else? any idea please?

  9. Hello I need some help to help me identify this kind of chart. Does it have a specific name ? I've been building it for years at work without knowing if there's a specific name or literature attached to it. How does it show? It is a chart showing a quantity and the rapidity to eliminate it through time. And if the quantity is not eliminated, it builds-up. How to read it ? Let's say we're talking about money, what you spend and your total savings. week32 you earn 22 week 33 you have 18 left out of these 22. + week 33 you earn 20, so you have the top point = 20+18 = 38 for w32 As long as what you've earn a specific week has been totally eliminated, the…

For every thing there, IS. There is far, far, far more that , IS NOT . Or maybe IS as well ! Exploring the opportunities that are in these vast open spaces , could well be , :- THE FINAL FRONTIER It always used to bother me with Mathematical equations , when plotted out on a two dimensional , or three dimensional graph. The line was there wiggling away. That was what was there! But that was a minuscule amount of the space offered by the 2 dimensional , or three dimensional , Space, also there. In Electronics , say Conductors , or Semi conductors , we surmise there are negative 'electrons' , flowing to produce an electric current, but we can als…

  14. I was watching this video and they said the girls in this society are initiated into womanhood through a test of strength and character. Well, having watched the video I didn't see her strength or character tested too much, but it made me wonder, are there primitive societies who DO subject girls to such tests? So I'm not saying some initiation ceremony, but actual tests of some of these traits that would typically be viewed as male traits; strength, courage, endurance etc.?

  15. Hello, today I would like to announce that it is possible to take a real photograph of the Milky Way instead of drawing a picture that probably looks like it. If we were able to find an entity with a mirror-like property outside of the Milky Way galaxy, and we looked in it with our telescopes, we might be able to find a reflection of the Milky Way galaxy, which would mean we wouldn't have to estimate what it looks like, because we would have an accurate picture of it.

Perhaps a poor question but I would be interested in any answer. There is some debate as to whether there really is any direction to Time (whether the universe could run backwards just as well in theory) Without being competent too address that point, can I bring up what I think may be a similar situation - the way a logical sequence is ordered in the mind (and on paper). We have mathematical proofs as one type of example among many: we start with an axiom ( a starting point) and build incrementally until we have constructed (in this case) a hopefully self consistent edifice. This can (I think) only be done in one direction : we cannot start with th…

  23. In science , possibly one of the most varied , yet most flexible tools . It's prominence in the current 'Electronic age ' gives us insight as well a mechanism to examine our surroundings .' " FEEDBACK " However it finds its place , widely spread , in Nature, Industry , Management as well as Electronics. Can we learn interesting points and insights , from the action of Feedback " ? There appear to be a range of differing effects , with different types and styles of feedback ( say , positive, negative, damped, loose, levels of, etc ) Are there uses for understanding these differing effects. Namely , in understanding scientific observations , in the univ…

  24. Could it be , that by limiting ourselves to Only a mechanical understanding of the Universe, we are only getting One , incomplete , facet of nature ? Could it be that a complete understanding is ' ONLY ' possible with an incredible interwoven understanding developed incorporating BOTH . FUNCTION ( Engineering Science ) And FORM ( Visual, Beauty , and Feeling ) ? After all , we as observers of the universe , have two halves to our brain :- ( one half very functional - Left hand Brain The other half very creative, visual, etc - Right hand Brain.) Mike
