I live in Canada and I am in highschool. My problem is that my math teacher is biased. I include every single details in a math fair journal yet I get 7/10. My friend was exactly the same and got 9 except it had... "I learnd that in math proposals, the choice in project is more important than the people who you work with." This isn't the first time; she does this all the time. I got frustrated after she simply told me to go back to my sit. And when she wrote, "simplify" on the board, I said, "the word is expand," she kicked me out of the class. I am having a meeting with all the biased teachers who scratch each others back. This is an impossible mee…

I've been so far gotten pissed off at every single teacher at my high school. Why? Because they mostly almost always follow a textbook approach towards teaching. This usually involves dishing out tons of overhead notes, homework and more importantly they are teaching facts, not ideas. For example, my Biology teacher was voted one of the best teachers in the state, yet I have an insane animosity towards him. For one, I can never ever have an intellectual debate with him, for example when I asked him about the possible divergence of telomerase into reverse transcriptase, he simply just gave me the cold shoulder and said "OK. Hm... can't say i know much about that…

Well, it's interesting to see that so many teachers in my district have been laid off. There will be, of next year, 1 math teacher, 1 or 2 science teachers, no english teachers, ... in the school. All the teachers received pink slips, they've been laid off. So next year, ... nevermind. It's stupid. And I haven't heard of it in the news yet. Sooner or later, this story is going to be on the news. Or at least it should. I can't believe that the district just laid off like 700+ teachers, and that's just right now. They'll probably go upwards to 1000+ soon enough.

I was wondering what skills I need to be an engineer. You see I am very curious and like to know how things work.I am very good at math and also at science. I can grasp concepts quite quickly and am very analytical I am also very good at creative thinking.Yet I am not very linear in my thinking and not very into details and also I am not very hands-on or into tinkering more into books and theory yet I still like to be practical. My family doubts my ability to be an engineering student for three main reasons 1.I am not detail -oriented.2 I am not a hands on tinkerer.3 I am theoretical all true. However I can do details just not very well.I like know how things work and a…

Hey This summer, I plan on participating in an entry exam for medicine. It requires a basic knowledge on biology, mathematics, chemistry and physics. I had a classical high school education, so very light on sciences. Biology and maths should be no problem; chemistry and physics are giving me a hard time though... I have a lot of catching up to do, and I will need a good book on basic classical physics. Considering the stuff I have to know, I assume it has to be a very big one. Subjects on the curriculum: mechanics, fluids, electrodynamics, electricity, waves, ... in other words: high school physics. Anyone have any good (big) book recommendations? Decent …

... but maybe it's the system I should be mad at... all through elementary and in my first year of middle school I did really well... then I started getting bored.. I could learn the material way faster than the teachers were teaching it (in pre-AP classes) I kept taking pre AP, then took the first year of AP classes when I got to highschool... and quit all but math AP classes soon after, because I hated to memorize stuff (and still do... unless it seems like it'd be worth remembering)... really my highschool just didn't challenge anyone to think... they spoon-fed us the information, then had us spit it back out... I started college 2 years ago, and was la…

I'm in the process of choosing my (high scchool) junior year classes, and I'm unsure about whether I should take Physics I HN junior or senior year. I've took Bio I and Chem I during my freshman and sophmore year, and I know colleges really look at your junior year. I'm taking GT/HN in other subjects also and i'm afraid it will be too much to handle, esp. w/ physics. In case I don't do well in Physics, I'm considering about taking Bio II AP, and then physics senior year. Any advice?? Thanks in advance

I've had a grudge against English since a long time. Not only is it a really subjective class (the teacher grades in theory based on a rubric, but technically grades without guidelines and focuses more on whether or not they like the person), my class focuses on memory and logical structure rather than creativity. I used to think creativity was better than essay structure, especially in writing. You don't go out and read essays, you go out and read books. Books are written in infinitely many ways, and I think English should be more open-minded in this sense.

I have almost decided on my modules this term, but i am still unsure which one to choose out of these two - > Fluid Mechanics - > Elementary Number Theory. Both of them look interesting, but fluid mechanics involves a lot of vector calculus, which currently due to laziness , i am really bad at. So at the moment I am tending towards Number Theory. Any advice?

Ok..maybe i'm a little young to be on this forum (I'm in grade 9) but i have a question. I've been watching the show CSI and now in the future all i want to be is a CSI. But I've been searching around on the internet and I'm confused. Is a CSI a Forensic Scientist, or are they different? Or can anyone (if they watch that show) tell me what the characters on the show are ( CSI or Forensic Scientist)? Thanks so much. Laura

I was thinking, we have alot of diversity on this board, many are scientists, many are college students, many are Highschool students and many are But we are all interested in science. Sooooo I thought I would start this thread for the current, and professional scientists to share their thoughts and advice to us that are up a coming in the profession of science. Anything you would do different? What political interferences do you face in your line of profession? What would be the most important advice you would give to anyone wanting to become a scientist? Or even if you want to share a work related story of how the new guy blew up the lab! Than…

Greetings all! Question for the Chemistry buffs. I need to take Principles of Chemistry I & II for my degree in Biomedical Computing. The problem is, I haven't taken a chemistry course since high school, which would have been about 10 years ago. The school I'm currently attending has an Introduction to Chemistry course, but it states that it's for "non-science majors." Here are the descriptions: CHEM 1020: Introduction to Chemistry This course is intended as a broad introduction to chemistry for the non-science major. Topics covered include the scientific method, atomic structure, the periodic table, bonding, acids and bases, nomenclature, equations, stoi…

ok, i need some help.. some serious help! i recently undertook AS-level bio/chem/phy having done my GCSEs and i've had some pretty good grades in the latter. My former just ended today.. its all over and I think my results are gonna be published sometime in Jan. I've done rather good in physics, ok in chem and very good in bio. now... the major reason i took these subjects is because i thought there was a good life to be lived as a scientist, a biomedical engineer, perhaps... with good wage and interesting work (since i love science). and everyone advised me so. but realizing now and seeing all the entry requirements in order for a degree for the universities that …
