  1. Well, my curiosity got the best of me, and I ordered it already. Still, if anyone has used it, perhaps a warning on what I'm getting myself into may be in order.
  2. I am thinking about purchasing Michael Spivak's Calculus book with the text solutions from his website as I've heard great things about it. From what I have read elsewhere, it seems it's a step beyond most Calculus textbooks, and has many difficult problems which help one to get a better understanding of Calculus. I just finished a semester of Calculus, and enjoy it quite a bit. However, the book I'm using (Stewart's), while not terrible, doesn't get very in depth with any topic. Has anyone here had a chance to use this book? Thoughts?
  3. See, this is how I thought neighbors were supposed to treat each other. Oh well, I'm over it. I know I've said things to people that I later regretted while drinking. I'm not sure why I let this bother me. I suppose that next time I get falling-over drunk, I'll just have to stop by his place for a little chat. That's great advice.
  4. Wow. One of my drunk neighbors just came down, knocked on my door, decided to hang out for awhile, then proceeded to tell me I wasn't "smart enough" to help out with the biomedical side of computing. Needless to say, I ripped him a new one, and told him to stop telling people that they are not "smart enough" to attempt to advance the state of the human condition. What the? Has anyone else here been attacked by people that claim to know the inner workings of everyone else's mind? I couldn't believe it. After knowing me for 5 minutes, he seemed to know how far I could possibly go with my interest in science. Mind boggling. I promptly kicked him out. Anyone else have any stories along these lines?
  5. Thanks for the advice TimeTraveler. I've decided to do the reasonable thing and take the introductory course. I realized I don't want to be struggling to catch up. The instructor states on their syllubus that good retention of H.S. Chem or the knowledge gained from the intro course is required for Principles 1151. I was mostly confused by the "non-science major" comment. They really need to reword the course descriptions.
  6. Greetings all! Question for the Chemistry buffs. I need to take Principles of Chemistry I & II for my degree in Biomedical Computing. The problem is, I haven't taken a chemistry course since high school, which would have been about 10 years ago. The school I'm currently attending has an Introduction to Chemistry course, but it states that it's for "non-science majors." Here are the descriptions: CHEM 1020: Introduction to Chemistry This course is intended as a broad introduction to chemistry for the non-science major. Topics covered include the scientific method, atomic structure, the periodic table, bonding, acids and bases, nomenclature, equations, stoichiometry, gas laws and oxidation and reduction. The laboratory introduces students to safe handling of chemicals, appropriate use of labware, and transcription of appropriate observations and data. CHEM 1151: Principles of Chemistry 1 This course is the first part of a two-semester sequence designed to give students a broad introduction to the field of chemistry. This course will cover a general introduction to the scientific method, basic stoichiometry, thermodynamics, atomic and molecular structure and bonding, gas laws, solution chemistry, and environmental topics. The laboratory experiments illustrate concepts covered in the lecture material, emphasize experimental techniques and use computer assisted data acquisition and manipulation. My question is, would it make sense to just take the Principles of Chemistry course and supplement it with a book like this? I do well with mathematics and the sciences. I'm also interested in the subject matter. Is taking Principles of Chem before an intro class a bad idea? Thanks in advance
