Hi first post here. My only science coursework is that from the postbac (intro bio, chem, organic, physics). It's too late to get a second bachelor's degree for financial reasons. I'm looking for ideas about how to spend the next year. I am interested in Chemistry and/or Drug Design, and more generally, a career in science. Will any graduate programs in Chemistry or related areas accept applications from people without science degrees? If I took a few science courses this year as a non-degree seeking student (which is cheaper) and volunteered in a lab, could I apply to graduate school? If I nailed the Chemistry GRE would I be considered for graduate school des…

Do you think instead of a year typically in each of the natural sciences in undergraduate education for environmental science that maybe two years of biogeochemistry would be better suited? Such as you had a year of elementary science using such, and more advanced coursework on basically biogeochemistry as a discipline? I think it would be better to make the science learned more applied early on, and with environmental science being a integrated science, I think this would be better as it would also allow for more time to spent with say mathematics, and social sciences and or studies as it pertains to environmental science. If you are for instance a chemistry ma…

Hi There, I am new to this discussion site but have enjoyed reading questions and answers for a while now. I am a secondary science teacher and am interested in opinions on the best way to educate and explain what isotopes are. Year 10's are intelligent and pick up very qickly. I find it hard not to cause confusion in the topic??? Cheers, Julies

I would like to decide my major soon. I am in community college but will likely be accepted as a transfer student to UNC. I want a career in researching medicine. More specifically, I want to specialize in fungus and mold research. I am very interested in the kingdom of fungus/mold and would love a career that allows me to search out fungus and mold in the wild and analyze and research it. My hope is to help develop new medicines from fungus and or mold. Is this whole business a long shot? What can I hope for realistically and is this the right career path if I would dearly like to spend time searching out molds/ fungus in the wild? unc offers these course studies in …

It's getting close to the time for me to declare a college major, and I'm fairly freaked out about it. I've put it off for as long as I possibly could, but the extra time hasn't cleared anything up for me. I apologize in advance for the length, but I'm only including info that might help explain my situation. I'm considering the following majors, in no specific order: 1. Statistics 2. Mathematics 3. Biology 4. Computer Science 5. Fish and Wildlife Science 6. Geographic Information Systems I also have to declare a minor, which would probably be one of the above also, or possibly Economics or Communication. I'm not real certain of what types of jobs I would l…

here`s a short vid presentation done by a fella I know from elsewhere on the internet. It addresses the issue of the demise of the Chemistry Set as well as a few public misconceptions (and there are Many!). http://blip.tv/file/1040283 as a Scientist/Author he`s recently published a book: http://www.makershed.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=9780596514921 that may be of some interest to a few here, it`ll also contain pictures of home Labs and experiments done by a few friends of mine as well. it makes a Very refreshing change to see Home Chemistry and Science presented in a Positive light for a change, rather than the witch hunt and vilification shown in th…

I was wondering if anyone could tell me the main differences between a biochemistry major vs a chemistry major in terms of difficulty as well as courses taken. I realize biochemistry focuses more on the biology aspect, but does this mean the mathematical concepts of chemistry are not as significant or is biochemistry the same as a chemistry major with added emphasis on biology? thanks

Hey all. Lets make a long story short here. Im a highschool drop out. However, an intelligent high school drop out. I've decided to go back to community college, and the hopefully, if possible, to a University. Interested in physics. I've decided to reteach myself as much math in science as possible, starting from very basic levels, to compensate for the fact that I have forgotten quite a bit, and so that I may test out of a few courses in community college. -Can anyone recommend good websites for learning math from as basic a level as pre-algebra? -Any specific text books that anyone could recommend, in any subject? -Is it even possible to go from a highscho…

is it a universal axiom that grad/med schools would prefer a B in calc phys than an A in alg phys? i'm guessing they'd rather have a B in alg phys then a C in calc phys though...or would they even prefer a C in calc to a B in alg phys? also, if you have learned calc 1 and 2, then is physics with calc gonna be that much harder than algebra physics? in other words, is it the calc that makes calc physics hard, or the physics (and therefore even algebra physics is tough)? thx

Hi guys, I was just wondering if I could borrow your opinions for a moment. I'm thinking of buying a website just for a bit of fun really because I'm all by myself now and have a lot of spare time. I wanted to buy one that was related to fun science projects because I know much about this subject. I looked on the web and found a site that I was quite interested in and was wondering if you could give me your opinion on it. The site is called http://www.project-science-fair.com I'd love if you could take a look so I can make an informed decision before emailing the owner. Thanks so much for your time, William

um in US and UK are there any universities that are relatively good in chemical engineering? (I know universities like Purdue and Columbia are renowned for its engineering faculties but I am not very confident if I can get in because I don't expect much from my SAT and A-levels). uh, and one side question, is the uinversity of chicago selective? thanks. =) I am a bit clueless.

The second in my series of looking-forward-to-graduate-school-even-though-I-haven't-started-college-yet topics. I believe that there has already been a thread that addressed this issue, but I can't find it for one and I don't think there was ever a direct, general answer there in any event. Does having a double major mean anything to a graduate schools in, roughly speaking, the biological or social sciences? I'm looking to go into a program in biological anthropology (they have some of those) or anthropology failing that, and I'm beginning down the path of a double major in anthropology and biology with a concentration and ecology and evolutionary biology (the deg…

are SAT marks more important than A-levels in America? I don't think I will do very well for SAT, as I really have no time to study for it because of my As this year, and i am a bit worried.

I just read a set of advice on entering graduate school, and I must say it shook me a bit. Apparently, "Graduate work is arduous and often emotionally draining; you will make barely enough money to live on, and you will have very little private time." Fun, fun. I'm still planning on going eventually (not that I'd really have anything else I could do with a BA in anthropology), but in the name of advance preparation, anyone have any graduate school horror stories? What should the wide-eyed neophyte expect? This might be entertaining too, of course.

I am thinking about getting some sort of degree in CS, dont know which one yet, and I was wondering if anyone had any advice. I looked around online for some online programs and found this one http://www.americansentinel.edu/webdegree/cs/ I am not very familiar with online degrees, but this one seems to be pretty cool. It is cheap, compared to other online universities, and it is accredited. I like the fact that it is online because it is flexible to fit in my schedule. They have quite a few CS degrees (IT, MIS, Web Design, etc) THey also have a CS specialization in game programming which is something that interests me. Anyone have any ideas?

Hello I was wondering if there were any universities in the North America that were known for their Space Science program or aerospace engineering. Anything along the lines of that. I'm looking at various Universities and fields for later in life at the moment and was just curious if there are some that i might of missed. I apologize if something similar to this is covered anywhere else. Thanks in advance

I'm graduation highschool, got into the University of Washington, and I want to study Mechanical Engineering. Everyone told me it's hella hard, and I'm afraid I would not make it and drop out (because a lot of people are). I'm taking a hardcore physics class (called AP Physics C). It's physics with Calculus, and I'm beasting that class with an easy "A" and no studying/doing the homework at all (because I don't feel like it, I'm a senior you know, just want to chill). I'm pro at thinking and problem solving, but I suck at math. I'm not even in a legit Calculus class, I'm doing some bullcrap Intro to Calc class, so I'm just studying math on my own/in the class. If anyo…
