  1. Hey, people. I'm taking developmental biology in the fall (it's a 300-level class). My knowledge of developmental embryology of the human species is quite lacking, as it is with other animals. I plan on taking a developmental biology course, but I am not sure what kind of things will be covered in that class. Does anyone have any ideas of what a class like that is like? That catalog said we'll be looking at cell division and differentiation. However, I'm wondering if it will be more intense and cover a variety of mammalian species. I'm not sure what will happen in that class.

Dr Michael Shermer interviews Dr Georgia Purdom at the Creation Museum in Kentucky. This video provides an example of someone holding a college science degree who is not a real scientist; scientific degree doesn’t necessarily equate to scientist. A real scientist: From Univ of Louisville Sciboard: Q. What is a Scientist Ans. Although a person with an advanced degree might claim to be a scientist, the true test of the scientist is how one thinks. A good scientist: Excepts nothing in science absolutely. Is willing to change his opinions based on new data. Does not rely on Authority. Thinks critically. Knows that extraordinary claims require e…

I'm not sure I am posting this in the right area, so feel free to tell me where else to post it, or perhaps a mod can move it. Lately, I have felt slightly overwhelmed by the number of publications I have been reading, when I really would like to spend more of my reading time on books. So, I would like to ask some of the readers out there what your opinion is on several publications, with comparisons between them. I DO NOT subscribe to all of these (just a few), but may change some of the ones I do subscribe to, and eliminate others. I like to stay up on Science and Skeptical issues, as well as other things, and I would like opinions on which are the best overall publ…

Hello guys and gals, I'm pretty new to these forums, and wanted to ask a question. Three years ago I graduated secondary school in electromechanics. Nowadays I'm working at a major chemical company, earning good money. So, all is well. Not really. I'd prefer to live my own life, and not my father's. I'd love to get at least a bachelor's degree in biotechnology, or a related field, in my pursuit to contribute to research into anti-aging (even being someone's assistant would satisfy me). The problem is, during my time in secondary school, very little knowledge was offered to me about biology, physics, or chemistry, and my calculus is also rather rusty. I know that I have …

To the people who have graduate degrees/jobs/careers/etc.: Is joining a college honor society worth it? I received an invitation to two freshman honors societies. The qualifications required to join are $70 and a 3.5 GPA. The societies do a few hours of community service each semester and give you a nice pin to put on your tie. (No mention of scholarships in the letter or their website.) If I am writing a resume, does anyone care that I have an honor society listed, when it really means "I have a 3.5 GPA" and that's already on the resume? (The general impression I get from the Internet is a solid "No.")

Here's a quick CNN article and video about Sir Ken Robinson: http://www.cnn.com/2010/OPINION/03/17/ted.ken.robinson/index.html?hpt=C1 Robinson's full speech and ideas were presented at TED, and if you have fifteen or twenty minutes, I highly suggest you watch the video: http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/ken_robinson_says_schools_kill_creativity.html If you don't have time for that, at least watch the video in the CNN article, as he makes very interesting points there as well. His big point is that mass education ignores the individual talents that people have. He gives the example of a girl who was too fidgety and active to succeed in her elementary …

  10. I asked my teachers and they weren't sure, and Google is giving me mixed results. I was going to call the University I wish to attend but they aren't available during this time - and I need to know for Monday. I took eleventh grade physics but didn't take 12th grade. I am worried I will need it to go for my B.Sc. Is it required? I have taken Chemistry, Biology and Environmental science to the highest levels possible. Thanks And I guess I should also inquire if you wish to pursue be awarded a Bachelor of Science do you need to take any physics classes?

Ok, so here is where I am at. I have about one term left of college before I have to make a definitive selection as to what I want to major in, yet after exhaustive efforts on my own I am left to still not having a decision made. I have reduced my choices down though. I like chemistry a lot, lots of fun in the lab, plus I don't mind all the equations with last names. The problem I have with chemistry for what its worth is what all can I work on, or in all reality will all I ever do is work with atomic chemistry. When it comes to chemistry I just want to think that I could eventually land a job smashing neutrons together if thats even possible, not just the period…

I revisited an article in Popular Mechanics about the popular Discovery Channel show, “Mythbusters”. On occasion I do watch the show and was thinking maybe this show will get people more interested in science. After reading the PM article, it appears that is the case, the show has a huge following with nearly 2 million viewers per episode. The show has been running on cable television for six years but I have only had cable television for a little over a year now, so just started watching this year. Many people point to the positive aspect that the show gets people, particularly kids interested in science, some people counter and say it is mainly about explosions…

I was just wondering if there were any good books or videos on Complex Analysis? I'm currently taking a class in it, and the textbook doesn't really adequately go over the proofs or examples. In particular, I'm having a hard time being able to understand mappings. Any help would be appreciated.

Anyone have experience with going into a PhD at age 25? I have a BS/MS from a good ChemEng program. I got accepted into a top MBA program, basically to avoid becoming a peg in industry. Everything makes sense, but I realize that I may miss the science. I have simple life needs, but cannot sacrifice on interest and independence. Hence the PhD is risky unless I go under a good advisor or a great interdisciplinary program (start at 25-26). I have good scores and solid undergrad research but did not do research post graduation. Anyone successful in doing this? Am I crazy for even considering it?

Im currently a senior in highschool and plan to pursue a major in Anthropology in college. Something that has recently gotten me worried is that a friend of mine mentioned that it is very hard to find fieldwork and I would most likely end up getting a job as a teacher. There is nothing wrong with being a teacher and it is a great career choice but its something that just isn't for me. Is what my friend said true?

Hello! I am a high school senior and at this point I am planning on majoring in Biochemistry and minoring in 'Health, Medicine, and Human Ethics' with a goal to pursue pharmacy school. I know that biochemistry is one of the hardest science majors (or so I've heard) and I a curious to hear other peoples experiences in choosing biochemistry. I am particularly worried about some of the math involve though I know I can do it. I am not skilled at math but with a lot of effort I make good grades. I've taken Bio I and II, and Chem I through my local community college and received A's in them but I do plan to retake them at my university since the CC classes were hard…

Hey guys. I've just passed my Earth Science degree with a 2:1 class and thought i'd share a couple of books I found very useful during my degree. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cassells-Atlas-Evolution-Earth-Landscape/dp/0304355119/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top Cassells Atlas of Evolution Earth Landscape. The cheapest copy I can find online is £325 GBP, I was lucky enough to have access to this book in my library. If you can get a copy of this or get your library to purchase a copy it come very highly recommended. Out of all the books I used during my course I've never seen a book so clearly set out. Another great book I recommend was written by one of my lecturers who…

  24. I once talked to an English teacher about "reading speed." Him and I both felt that we like to take our time with reading. This means we don't try to rush and read 14 pages an hour. I attempt to understand and comprehend what I am reading. Personally, I've been able to move my reading speed from about 5 pages an hour to about 7 to 8 pages an hour in the past year. I think that's good progress. However, I'm thinking that it's still considerably slow. I'm mostly reading either chemistry books or biology books these days. I think a lot of my reading speed has to do with whether or not I'm familiar with the material. Sometimes it has to do with me losing visual focus, and…
