Hi there folks, I'm supposed to start uni soon, new chapter of life. I don't wanna take much of your time so long story short I'm interested in a research career as a theoretical physicist and until recently was interested in studying astronomy (getting bachelor's degree in it). Now I am rethinking that and I'm starting to believe that I won't learn as much mathematics as I would truly love to during astronomy degree, so I started thinking about doing a bachelor's in mathematics. I am interested if one can do bachelor's in mathematics and then proceed to do master in physics or something like that? The other choice is also physics but I'm not sure about that either... Any…

  4. Hello everyone I am beginning on a research adventure about the complex relationship between climate change and biodiversity in coastal ecosystems. As our globe experiences fast environmental transitions, it is critical to understand how these changes impact the delicate balance of life in coastal zones. My research looks into numerous elements of this complex issue. First, I want to look into the direct consequences of rising temperatures and sea levels on the distribution and abundance of coastal species. • How do various animals; ranging from marine mammals to intertidal creatures; react to these environmental changes? • Are any observable trends …

  5. (url deleted The Chelyabinsk event in 2013 stands as a stark reminder. A relatively small asteroid resulted in extensive damage, injuring over 1,200 people. On a more colossal scale, the catastrophic asteroid impact 65 million years ago disrupted Earth's ecosystem and led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. In responding to this challenge, agencies like NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office have been at the forefront. Their mission? Detect, track, and strategize against these celestial threats. The advanced techniques employed, from kinetic impactors to gravity tractors, are a testament to human ingenuity in safeguarding our planet. Furthermore, t…

I am looking to make 1M LiPF6 in DMC:EC=1:1 Vol% with 10%FEC as an electrolyte. I assume that i need to make it in a glovebox but further than that i don't now where to begin. Does anyone make these themselves already and can maybe explain more regarding measurements/materials?

  9. Hello, I hope you are feeling very well. I'm new to this forum and I'm sorry in advance if I'm not participating appropriately. I study veterinary medicine in Chile and am working on my thesis. I have a question in case anyone has information that is probably in the VET04 book Perfomance Standards for Antimicrobial Susceptibilty Testing of Bacteria Isolated From Aquatic Animals. The topic of my thesis is "Detect and characterize the antimicrobial resistance of E. coli to florfenicol isolated from bivalve mollusks from the Los Lagos region, Chile." We want to find the Epidemiological Cutoff Values of some antibiotics, such as florfenicol itself, oxytetracyclines to com…

  10. I have received the following problem: Concider the following simple model of a neuron z = wx + b logits, yˆ = g(z) activation, L2 (w, b) = 12 (y − ŷ)^2 quadratic loss (Mean Squared Error (MSE), L2 loss, l2-norm), L1 (w, b) = |y − yˆ| absolut value loss (Mean Absolut Error (MAE), L1 loss, l1-norm), with x,w,b ∈ R. Calculate the derivatives ∂L/∂w and ∂L/∂b for updating the weight w and bias b. Determine the results for both loss functions (L1, L2) and assume a sigmoid and a tanh activation function g(z). Write down all steps of your derivation. Hint: You have to use the chain rule. I have considered the following approach for example L2 d…

  14. I was studying and reading about Electrophysiology and I came across this scientist named James A. Clemens and I found his 1974 paper about "Non-sexual Hormonal Influences on the Electrophysiology of the Brain" and I found it very interesting, but I have no idea how reliable he is and also when I looked it up, I came across absolutely nothing. So I ask you guys to help and find out about your reputation in the field of science. Thank you!!

Have a dependent variable (overall score (higher the better)) and two independent variable (sleep group (sleep deprived and non-sleep deprived) & gender). Two-way ANOVA conducted with no significant result as well as with the interaction. I want to see if sleep deprivation has more of an effect on either gender, is it the column with the asterisk "gender*sleep group" that is investigating the hypothesis I am looking for?

Inspired by another thread, I wanted to see opinions on the rise of language AI for science teaching. I would actually like to go back a bit to the rise of the internet. Before that time, literature search was an often slow process involving going into the library and copying articles manually. With the rise of online databases and encyclopedias, access to information became a breeze. The in hindsight optimistic assumption of that time is that folks would need to spend less time searching for info, and therefore spend more time synthesizing. Thus, the logic went the quality of student work (but also research) should improve, as folks would use more time on thinking a…

Consider a daniel cell. according to nernst equation, the emf of the cell is given as E = E* - (RT.ln([Zn2+]/[Cu2+]))/nF where E* = emf of the cell under standard conditions and the other symbols have their usual values. Let the concentration of Cu2+ ions [Cu2+] be 1 M. As [Zn2+], the concentration of zinc ions in the oxidation half cell tends to zero, the equation predicts that the emf of the cell will approach infinity. How is this possible? What am i missing?

I've just found a video on YT under the title "Exposing Scientific Dogmas - Banned TED Talk - Rupert Sheldrake". I'm constantly struggling over whether to say something or just shut up. This is one of the times when I just couldn't shut up. The video 'exposes' a series of dogmas that --apparently-- keep people's minds in a prison. For some mysterious reason dogmas #6 and #8 don't appear in the video. Unless they popped up at the end of the video, which I don't know. For some reason the algorithms 'thought' I would find this interesting. And they were right. I find some kinds of stupidity very interesting. So you don't have to watch the video, here's the low-down: Dog…
