I don't know if anyone will respond to this or not, but I've always been curious as to how many people have actually heard of Knoxville, Tennessee. "Heard of" would probably mean you know what state it's in, maybe broadly where it's located. More that just hearing the name somewhere. It's a medium sized city. A good 300,000 in the metro area. We've made a few famous people. James Agee, Admiral Farragut, Nikki Giovanni, Jack Hanna... Trace Atkins... Yes, Johny Knoxville... Mountain Dew came from Knoxville. There's Knoxville marble in the Pentagon. The Knoxville Zoo was the first in the world to breed African Elephants in captivity. We had the World's Fair in '82. UT's …

Caveat Before late '99, as can be confirmed by GOOGLE and other chronological archives, there were no (zero) discussions on 'gravity is the 4th dimension', or gravity, electricity & magnetism as the 4th, 5th & 6th dimensions. Or The Reinstatement of Einstein's Unified Field w'out Math: The Big Bang Theory is Wrong. All that has changed, since. In late '99 (under a bevy of witnesses, including his co workers at the time <in Santa Cruz, CA>), one Brian Kirk Parquette (bkparque) enthusiastically introduced himself to me and several of my friends and acquaintances; asked to buy a copy of the (condensed) 54 page, 5th edition of my (627 page) hard copy publ…

I seem to be getting more & more frustrated by trying to get involved in discussions , and bumping into more opinion/belief [ not based in any fact { one of the best example lately was a quote " I'm not a chemist I do not know & I do not want to know "} ] , This was talking about two types of alternative diesel fuels , bio-diesel vs. waste vegi oil . The point being that I seem to be noticing that the world around me is devolving from moder thinking / more knowledge . Oh ya , that theory , is a work in progress , or not !!! My 1st post , hope to find a lot of theorys/info . Thanks John

I hear in many threads in the physics section in regards to views I shall call them that its the math/calculations that makes something true. IS such an actual or viable position that professionals in such a field hold, even if something has not been tested or for that matter directly observed? It seems to me that with reality as a whole, that simply does not equate into truth, no pun intended.

There was a thread a while back where we were asked to share 'our stupidest moment.' In a similar vein, this is to share those situations where somebody else has displayed a moment of profound stupidity, they could be a work colleague, friend or family member, or anyone really...that warrant a Please no quotes from here, this is for situations outside of SFN. To start off, this happend when I was much younger, and it had been snowing heavily, which is quite rare where I live. So naturally we wanted to make the most of it. So we found a steep hill on a housing estate, near a friends house, and were sledging down on tea trays, sometimes ending up in a heap at the bott…

I just wondered as Religion and Science see to be in a constant tussle to provide answers. So which side of the fence does everyone sit on? Can anyone truly sit in the middle? I am Atheist. I just trust in science .. it seems completely alien to me that people can take the Bible as true or believe in a supernatural being. Edit: I have added a poll to this thread. Please bear in mind that Elassarina is not asking you "please tell me your religious beliefs". There is an 'Other' option as a safety net, but I don't expect that anyone should really need it. Sayo.

Has anyone else grabbed a copy of the new DVD, "Babylon 5:The Lost Tales"? It's the first in a new series of direct-to-DVD stories. If it sells well then Warners will front the cash for more. If anyone's interested it's available from Amazon. I won't post a direct link as I don't want this to come across as an ad for the show.

Last friday night I was at a bar that happened to be in front of a bookstore. This girl came up and asked my friend to borrow a cigarette. We were talking about Harry Potter. As someone who reads what I would consider to be literature, I was arguing that an adult is wasting their time by reading Harry Potter. There are so many good books that I want to read that children's books like Harry Potter certainly don't make it on my list. I've never read any of the Harry Potter books, so I'm judging them from ignorance. For some odd reason I've never felt the urge to read the books, nor do I feel like my time would be well spent doing so. Anyway, this girl and her t…

OK! I'm here again to get such Ideas from the Geeks? Geneius guys like you all here!. I just want a good catch phrase about science and technology. It's fine by just only in one sentence needed to deliver a good Idea about what is on about Science and technology, trust me I just needed a good one not too great or teriffic and just need something for a highschool level teachings. Example: 1) Science and technology is for the betterment and a must to our world. 2) Science and technology makes life better and easier. ^ something like that? but that one is too common or easy and plain stupid a Gradeschool level definition of science. Ahem! sorry for this I …

A colleague of mine who just published a book is giving a public lecture and book signing tomorrow and I want to be supportive and attend. I also wrote up a few questions drawing from his book so I can help him out in that manner. But as I was looking over the book I noticed that he's addressed "Mr." on the flap and back cover, even though he has a J.D. degree. I've called him "doctor" before in person, but now I'm uncertain -- was I in error? I don't want to embarass him at the event, but I don't want to ask him either, especially since he's long since invited me to call him by his first name. It would just be too wierd to ask. What do you all think? Help me …

...is really pretty cool. If you don't know what it is last.fm is a personalised Internet radio station that takes your likes and dislikes and makes recommendations based on that. You can look at other peoples profiles and get an idea of what they are listening to and share and expand your musical taste in a nice legal way. Anyone else here use last.fm? Should there maybe be an SFN group?

I was thinking about it the other day. Does evolution and natural selection mean that one day my descendents will be eating and preying on each other? That's just weird.

Well, I was reading a series of short stories written by someone, and I was talking to her about them. They were really good, and I suggested possibly turning them into a film, but the stories would need some special effects to make it to the big screen. However, neither of us have the money to do such a thing, nor the programs to start, though we have places to do so. Then we went into a discussion about local independent filmmakers, and how we might get one of them to help us. However, we know nobody. We'll keep searching, but in the mean time, what do you guys think about independent filmmakers? None of the major company types, but ones that you can only see in your to…

Dear members of this Forum, Some time ago I discovered the so called 'Forbidden Letters' to Philip Gardiner. They deal with alchemy. If one studies the Letters, one learns that alchemy was not about changing he chemical lead (Pb) into the chemical gold (Au), but that it is all about the 'lead' and 'gold' of our soul. The Letters are a fast and quite cryptic (especially Letters 1-2) exchange of esoteric knowledge. But let this not discourage you. http://www.world-mysteries.com/PhilipGardiner/ Alchemy seems to work as follows: our body has to be consumed and recomposed in a fire India calls Kundalini, and modern alchemists call sub-atomic. [Phoenix-metaphor…

(I didn't want to derail a good thread in the Cosmology area so I thought one here would be more appropriate.) Just something that struck me as interesting. In this thread on the Fermi Paradox Sceptic Lance says To which I can only add "Especially since anyone who thinks they may have found evidence of such a visit is obviously a fool or fraud and should not be listened to". On the one hand is the complaint about the lack of evidence for a visit, yet on the other is the automatic assumption that those who think visits have been or are occurring are crackpots. (And most of them are.) I find this dichotomy interesting. Please note, I'm not talking about the …

This thread is just to share those possibly rare moments or hours, where all the responsibilites of the day are put aside (works over, kids are asleep et.c), and you get to do exactly what you want. For me, getting back from work sitting in the back garden with a huge cup of tea, and just pondering and enjoying the sun (although that's been sadly lacking recently...the sun that is) More recently, (after avoiding playing it for the last two years) I like to get up at the crack of dawn on Sunday, and emmerse myself in WOW for several hours, or late at night with a bottle of wine. SFN chat, if I'm in on a Friday, is always good fun. So what do you get up t…
