Pseudoscientific or speculatory threads belong here.

Speculations Forum Rules

The Speculations forum is provided for those who like to hypothesize new ideas in science. To enrich our discussions above the level of Wild Ass Guesswork (WAG) and give as much meaning as possible to such speculations, we do have some special rules to follow:

  1. Speculations must be backed up by evidence or some sort of proof. If your speculation is untestable, or you don't give us evidence (or a prediction that is testable), your thread will be moved to the Trash Can. If you expect any scientific input, you need to provide a case that science can measure.
  2. Be civil. As wrong as someone might be, there is no reason to insult them, and there's no reason to get angry if someone points out the flaws in your theory, either.
  3. Keep it in the Speculations forum. Don't try to use your pet theory to answer questions in the mainstream science forums, and don't hijack other threads to advertise your new theory.

The movement of a thread into (or out of) Speculations is ultimately at the discretion of moderators, and will be determined on a case by case basis.

I am just a bit curious about the gills process in fish, they must do something like electrolysis to extract the O from the H2 in water, and I can only imagine that considering how long gilled creatures have existed and been evolving, that they must have some effeciency tricks that if applied, could make industrial H2 production easier, as least as it pertains to electrolysis. I don't mean bio-systems for extracting hydrogen from water, but anything they do that gives them an edge could probably be built mechanically into a system. Does anyone know if this has been looked into and, if fish are actually less effecient than our own current mechanical methods or a…

No doubt a lot of you already know about the supposed timetraveller 'John Titor'. I read a lot of stuff by people trying to disprove and show that he's hoax, but I haven't found anything especially convincing. These following predictions by John Titor were the most convincing and made me think he could be real: Plus he said there would be a woman president in 2008 (Condi Rice or Hillary?)... which would make sense for Condi, since she's an expert on Russia/USSR and John Titor predicted Russia would nuke USA in 2015... Anyone have anything that could prove him as a hoax? But please keep it simple... I don't want to go through a pile of links jus…

I was not sure where to put this topic. But since instincts are as much psychological as physical I thought this might be a good place. The idea came to me yesterday when I realized that there is no one size fits all when it comes to our instincts. There appears to be a buffer that allows for variety around an optimum. Let me just start with an example. If we look at the breathing instinct. This is the most important instinct since after about 7min without air, tragic results can occur in most people. Luckily, this instinct is done for us, unconsciously, to assure not too much tampering. Exercise, although beneficial to good breathing is not essential. Many people ca…

I assume the electron charge can be represented by a near-field which goes as (r^-1)e^-r, as opposed to an unexplained delta function singularity. Mathematically this is reasonable; indeed any potential or field quantity which goes at the origin as r^-2, or higher order, produces no residue to integration there. Charge density must rapidly fall off to nothing in the far; electric field must have the expected far field. Mathematically we are free to do this, as I show. Rather than interpret this as a 'monopole density', we can see it as a dielectric-like response from the vacuum. It is better to think of a neutral plasma of equal, massless species. Charge can thus b…

I'm not sure if the unknown signal I discover could mind control, but at least it could control what you dream while you are asleep. It is wast of time and money if you don't know what have happened or changed when a paranormal is happenning. Some changes might be very slowly or quickly, or tiny, or most of the paranormal claims were happened transitorily. It might confuse you to make sure if it is caused by paranormal power. To test such phenomena indeed worthy all the skepticisms, and you might got nothing from research such phenomena. A ghostly phenomena distinctly happens everyday almost everytime around me , perhaps such phenomena is more valuable compared t…

If you've ever watched the core(whether it be for the pleasure of mocking it or because you were being tortured) you'll know about the metal/mineral/alloy called unobtanium. I think ive just found it. After my previous memory pen shattered i bought a new one about 20 mins ago. The packaging displays all the same characteristics of unobtanium as described by 'the core', when under stress it gets stronger, resistant to heat etc. etc. I tried scissors, they broke. i tried melting a corner off with my lighter, it didn't melt. i tried biting a corner off, i cut my tounge. i say we build tanks out of this stuff. P.S. i still haven't got the memory pen out.

Within the "legitimate" (research or academic ) institutional sciences, is there a field of inquiry devoted to the research of extraterrestrial involvement in the creation or evolution of the human species? If so, I'd appreciate it if someone could name it and direct me to related sites/sources. If not, I'd be curious to know the reasons, based on these thoughts: - We know that the age of our universe is between 11 and 20 billion years old. Plenty of time for other life forms to exist elsewhere in the universe, especially when considering the time it is believed that it took for life to evolve on planet Earth. - We know that, statistically, it is very likely …

This is a different discussion than the one being offered by 'the tree' on the universe being open or closed. I'd like to know if a cosmology is possible wherein there is an infinite manifold of regions coalescing or expanding, like we see in our galactic bubble structure. Think of yeasted bread dough or/and Swiss cheese. Thinking simply, if our region were approaching a wall-like attractor, couldn't we be accelerated before the beginning of collapse?

An orbiting electron around the nucleus readily absorb Energy such as light and then excites. As it excites the +ve charge of the protons makes the electron start loosing energy. it doesnt start removing the Light energy from itself because that will be against "Quatum Theory", so it waits until the total energy is drained out and then it releases them as Packets of Light energy (Quanta)and then at the same time returns to its previous orbit due to the energy lost. This is the Quatum Theory of Excited State.OK, this is one that is so simple and of course classical if you put into a hydrogen electron (in its ground state orbiting around the proton which readi…

  14. Are any 2 electrons exactly equal in all possible mathematical sense ? Is this really conceivable and possible ? I find it hard to imagine 2 electrons that are exactly equal as if they were 2 exactly equal numbers. So electrons would end up being pure mathematical entities-abstractions. Maybe quantum indetermination and virtual particles and feynman diagrams of electrons self interacting make it so that NO TWO ELECTRONS ARE REALLY EVER EXACTLY EQUAL.... to any decimal place. No 2 electrons are exactly equal because they have different positions in space and undergo slightly different influences by their surrounding environment. So they have slightly different coordin…

First, I have no evidence to prove this. It it simply another explanation for the mass extinction 65 million yest ago. As strange as it may sound, my idea is that humans killed the dinosaurs. People still debate that time travel is impossible. However, physics have already proved that you can bend time. What I am suggesting is that in the future, assuming we have the technology for time travel, a mad scientist will want to answer the question: What really killed the dinosaurs? This scientist will travel aprroximately 65 million years to into the past to find out. The scientist could have a cold, and the cold could go to a dinosaur at the lower end of th…

Many many galaxies away, far beyond the view of our modern telescopes, there is a small hole (for lack of a better word) and this continually spews out energy. Not much energy, in fact less than a joule a year. This energy comes from the larger multiverse that our universe habitates, in sort of the same way that a punctured ball takes in water when placed in a bucket. Is there anyway that we know this is not there? If not, then why are we so sure that the universe is a closed system?

Will it ever be possible for us to change our dna completely? Will it be possible for us to change our DNA and tell it not to use oxygen, but maybe hydrogen for life, and tell it that 400 degrees celsius wont kill us. Maybe then we could move onto another planet. Could we evolve our selves manually?

Hi, I'm new as you can tell and I have a question. I will try to word it as good as I can so bear with me. I have been asking myself this for a while now. Oh, this has nothing to do with God. Let me first start off with a reminder that when you sleep time passes by quicker (you feel that it does). To you it will feel like a moment, no matter how long have you been out, coma....whatever When you die it's the same deal, only no dreaming after a couple of days, once shit stops completely. So in no way will you know how much time passed. Now, universe is infinite, and here comes my question, or whatever you call it. Infinite universe never goes away, and ma…

Wow, so I've just stumbled upon this whole "consciousness singularity" idea (yay, more singularities!) which is essentially that the amount of intelligence in the universe is increaing in an exponential trend and will eventually reach some sort of limit where the universe has been completely consumed by consciousness. Then I found this little piece someone wrote: http://www.decillion.us/dmax/essays/BootStrappingGod-orig.html Here's what he had to say about it: And yeah, that's pretty much what I believe, that we're heading towards a future where the amount of intelligence in the universe continues to balloon exponentially and we are basically sitting …

If we look at a typical neuron, it has a cell body and two types of branching processes, the dendrites and the axons. Neurons are directional with respect to internal current flow, with the axon the output zone. The dendrites are the most common current input zone due to axon output from another neuron working in conjunction with neurotransmittors. The axon output of one neuron can also affect a cell body and as well as the axons on a neighboring neuron, but the final internal current flow, will exit the axon. Although the internal current direction within neurons will flow from the dendrite, through the cell body toward the axon, the external surface current of a ne…

  22. Hydrogen bonds are more than a dipole potential between a hydrogen atom and the unbonded electrons of an highly electronegative atom. What makes hydrogen bonds unique is that the hydrogen goes into a hydrogen bond carrying the primary burden of the potential. The shared electrons will have a lower potential to form the hydrogen bond. This anomaly can be understood by looking at the hydrogen bonding in water. A water molecule will have four hybrid sp3 orbitals. The hydrogen of water are bonded to two of these four orbitals. The other two hybrid orbitals are occupied by unshared electrons that participate in hydrogen bonding. The hybrid orbitals allow the covlantl…

I know that Einstien said that light speed was impossible to break. But I've got a challenge for everyone here. FIND A WAY. lol. I'm not sure of his exact words but I know many people believe it is impossible because it is impossible to substane life at such speeds. But what would happen if you could shift a body into a complete energy form. Then how about if you switch the person back to matter even before the full transfer of matter to energy can be completed? Is this even remotly possible? If not post any and all Idea's of how to reach Warp speed here. Notice I said reach it, not survive it.

I know a man who has a somewhat clear presentation on protons being imagined as: POSITRON::ELECTRON::POSITRON . First of all, did you realize that one charge can attract two (or more?) opposites? The mutual repulsion is less in the above scheme, than attraction. The humor is gigantic: WHERE DID ALL THE ANTIMATTER GO? LONG TIME PASSING... This I present of a paper from Charles Southwood, just for fun.
