Speculations Forum Rules

The Speculations forum is provided for those who like to hypothesize new ideas in science. To enrich our discussions above the level of Wild Ass Guesswork (WAG) and give as much meaning as possible to such speculations, we do have some special rules to follow:

  1. Speculations must be backed up by evidence or some sort of proof. If your speculation is untestable, or you don't give us evidence (or a prediction that is testable), your thread will be moved to the Trash Can. If you expect any scientific input, you need to provide a case that science can measure.
  2. Be civil. As wrong as someone might be, there is no reason to insult them, and there's no reason to get angry if someone points out the flaws in your theory, either.
  3. Keep it in the Speculations forum. Don't try to use your pet theory to answer questions in the mainstream science forums, and don't hijack other threads to advertise your new theory.

The movement of a thread into (or out of) Speculations is ultimately at the discretion of moderators, and will be determined on a case by case basis.

cell theory (Cell theory refers to the idea that cells are the basic unit of structure in every living thing) and that all living things have certain characteristics but those characteristics are part of the definition so any "life" that violated this theory would not actually BE life its like theorizing that all dogs bark and then redefine the word dog to mean (a 4 legged animal that barks) if there was a dog that was injured and could no longer bark it would cease to be a dog by this (redefined) definition.

  2. Hi: I have two favorite wavelengths [colors] of visible light. These two wavelengths of light [when emitted monochromatically and perhaps together as well]: 1. Cause the least amount of stimulation [hopefully none] of the rods of the average human retina 2. Cause the least amount of stimulation [hopefully none] of the blue cones of the average human retina Wavelength-1 is reddish-green while wavelength-2 is greenish-red. Both wavelengths [even if view separately] will stimulate both red and green retinal cones, hence the terms “reddish green” and “greenish red”. However, reddish-green causes more stimulation of green cones than red cones, while greenish-r…

  3. As an introductory note, I shall say that the theory behind my ranting and raving, or bits and pieces therein, is self consistent throughout. With reference to the above title I would like to mention that a common way of thinking is to consider time and space in their aspect of absolute quantities. Seen as physical quantities, time and space are almost always thought of: the first in terms of millions of years, and the second in terms of intergalactic space. What I have in mind instead is the smallest unit measure of time and space: the “second of time” and the corresponding “distance of space” which is 300 million metres, roughly from here to the moon. In my work, I am a…

  4. If gravity had positive and negative poles, like magnetism, could the opposite pole be hidden because it existed in anti-spacetime? Matter tends to organize into apparently spherical bodies, but what if the center of these bodies was just a transition point between the positive and negative poles of gravitational force, where only the positive spacetime-generating side is observable? So whereas we generally think of gravity-wells bottoming-out at their centers, could the curvature of spacetime actually be continuing through some kind of virtual/shadow anti-spacetime that feeds force back into the gravity field as we know it? Think about it like being an electron l…

With this first thread, I would like to put forward a proposition which science may or may not, in the near future, find it a suitable alternative to the ongoing state of things. I am specifically referring to the Relativity paradoxes and to the many unanswered questions plaguing Quantum mechanics. With both these scientific disciplines, the problem seems to rest and to lean heavily: (a) on the abstract status of «time», and (b) on the emptiness of «space». To make a long story short, the parameter «time» when applied to Science in general has been made to play the part of the interloper ever since natural philosophy became science, that is: ever since Galileo. Likewis…

I was discussing the details of what it meant to say that time was infinite, specifically into the past. The main objection that I got was that "if the past is infinite, then it would have taken an infinite of time to reach the present." My first impulse is to say "So?" and ignore it, but I was having difficulty explaining why that didn't bother me. So I'm curious as to what you guys think. Could time extend infinitely into the past? If so, what would that mean? If not, why?

Before I say anything, keep in mind I am not an expert in thisfield by any means; I am a mere high school senior with an interest in physicsand many questions regarding the subject. I may be entirely incorrect ineverything I bring up, and I will not at any point claim that my theories areanything but speculation. I am searching for counterarguments to my hypotheses, not trying to declare them fact. The Premise: If the Sun wereto spontaneously disappear by miraculous means, people say that from a referenceframe on Earth we would see its light vanish eight minutes after the event, andat the same time we would fly off tangent to our elliptical orbit. QT is a mathematical prediction theory, it does not explain how or why. Classical theory can be updated to include a partial explanation as follows: All natural force theories are variations on the Inverse Square Law; confusion arises at the start (i.e. with Newton’s gravity) because the term vacuum is frequently used where the correct term is partial vacuum. Starting with gravity Newton gave us the mathematical theory of gravity (partial vacuum) and a graph of a gravity field (partial vacuum field) without a central mass. The force carrying particle is the Graviton that is it’s own anti-particle, therefore a graph of the internal force fields of the graviton would …

Well firstly let me explain something, in order for this forum to remain at a valuable state, and this is my first post on this forum and I ahve been studying you guys for a while and this forum could use some cleanup, do not ever threaten creationists or give them terms on how they can behave, if anything they should be giving you terms, time and time again everyday all day non stop creation of the universe is proven true like it or not, and you can choose to make a counter theory or explanation for everything that creationists come up with as being of devine design, fact is people are getting more and more afraid to step up the plate and start telling the truth and beli…

I have a bunch of questions and ideas... please point out any statements that are false. Since reading of the concept in GR that gravitational attraction is a kind of inertia more than a force, I've been trying to build a conceivable understanding of it. Since then I've tried to "correct" anyone who speaks of light following a curved geodesic as if the light is being affected by gravity, as if gravity is "pulling on the light". I recently read in wikipedia that photons have mass, so does that mean they are affected by gravity? So I'm wrong??? But then I read here http://everything2.com/title/Geodesic that geodesics are paths of zero acceleration (in the c…

Is it possible that the moon and earth is connected by magnetic band and when a solar flare hits the band a rubberband effect will accure thus dragging moon closer to the earth,i know highly speculative but its magnetic field should bounse back when the solar flare whent by,could then influence the oceans raising in australia for instance.

Speculations on Deep-Space-ship designs Deep Space is strewn with dust & gas. Space-craft collision, with the same, could be catastrophic, especially at trans-luminal speeds (~c). Even with a forward-mounted deflector shield, damage & drag could accumulate, especially on cosmos-crossing inter-galactic hyper-missions, whereon millions of years of fuel, for constant counter-acceleration, seems insurmountable: Fig. 1 -- deep-space-ship Von Braun en route to star-system Darwin (DC Alien Planet DVD) Perhaps, then, deep-space-ships would be better built in an annular shape, like a 'frisbee football': Spinning such a ship could create artificia…

i believe time is nothing more then a measurement. things happen do to reactions. we measure these reactions by using the measurement of time. like we use a tape measure to measure a room. i just don't get why people think time pushes us along ? like car coming to a stop. has nothing to do with time. most of the time. it has to do with a person foot hitting the breaks. (reaction) building pressure in the break line by squeezing break fluid tighter. (reaction) which pushing the breaks against the break disc causing the car to slow down. (reaction). which we measure by time. how long it took it to happen.

Well lately I have heard a lot about 2012. I have heard 3 different stories and have been presented with lots of so called evidence. These are the 3 thoeries: -Planet X will cause all sorts of disturbences when it comes into close quarters with our solar system. It's large gravitational field being the main cause. Apparently a large body has been detected a few billion miles out. It also seems our sattelites have experienced wierd gravitational anomilies lately. -In the centre of our universe is a black hole, from this black hole extends a thin disk-like gravitational field (the galactic belt). Apparently our solar system orbits the black hole as well as oscilatin…

I think, without any evidence, at the least indirect evidence. That its safe to assume that existence or more specifically the nature of reality is perhaps all a great illusion to keep us playing the ultimate game. And even though it seems so plainly obvious that none of it is an illusion to any degree since we can physically effect ourselves with it and influence things within it. However it could be just that which makes the illusion so great, like the matrix. An illusionary-game hypothesis would possibly explain one of the greatest mysteries of nature, which is why there are so many particles. As well as why everything seems so complicated with all of what science has …

  20. Evolution has never been observed. Saying species evolved over millions of years is a faith statement and is not the scientific method. Science is knowledge from observation. If you believe you have empirical evidence that evolution has been observed. Please put it up. I am not talking about words i am talking about video footage or a photo. I am willing to pay £10 to anyone that has a photo or video evidence of macroevolution taking place.

The LHC Project. I completely understand what they are attempting to find. It will result in massive FAIL. (already has) All the time and billions spent on building something that will never prove anything worth knowing. I am certain that within the next ten years the whole thing will be disassembled and sold for scrap. Then they will use the place for some expensive fancy Condominiums. In the mean time... somebody's making a ton of money on it.

I was reading up on the infamous {money pit} on nova scotia, oak island mystery and i found it quite compelling as to the acclaimed people that invested in this, and still nothing has turned up really. From what i read the whole thing is shrouded in mystery, from pirate gold to alien space craft landing zones. What got me was the way it was built to literly be unobtainable and so far it has. The speculation is also that nothing is down there just a nothingless pit. But when drilling through multiple platforms they discoverd gold flakes and supposedly a stone tablet-rock with ancient markings of some sort. So from beginning to end i think this definitely worth looking alit…

Let's suppose that negative mass exists and that it responds by being repulsed by other matter rather than attracted. So in our galaxy there is a lot more regular mass but there is also some negative mass. Again, a big supposition (and yes I realise that even if there had been, it would have been flung out into deep space long ago). Would the total gravitational effect of the galaxy be based on the positive mass minus the negative mass, and therefore the galaxy would still have an overall attractive quality, or if the negative mass were arranged in such a way as to block the gravitational 'waves' could it actually repulse other galaxies. So say a star is surrounded by…

A major research effort to develop a cure for diabetes has hit a roadblock which has not yet been explained. To cure type 1 diabetics, transplanting a whole pancreas or pancreatic beta cells exposed to the immune system is fairly ineffective, since the initial autoimmune disease which causes diabetes in the first place persists to damage the replacement islets, which have to be additionally protected against conventional rejection by highly toxic immunosuppressive drugs which are more damaging to the body than diabetes itself is. The shortage of donor islets and pancreatic tissue is also so extreme that even if the procedure worked perfectly, fewer than 1% of diabetics …
