We occasionally see people such as Andrew Wakefield whose top-drawer high-profile careers get utterly trashed, and I wonder what they might end up doing for work -- welcome people at the local Wal-Mart? We say "they're all washed up", but seriously, for example, who would hire Wakefield and for what kind of work?

Many of you have likely seen this item by now. Can't say I was stunned with it. But in essence, what does it say to us? How can thirty empty years of a persons life be filled again with anything other than bitterness? If something else, with what? Better to have said: "Alas poor Urich, I knew him well". Then, have let the chair, ax, rope, or needle do their job. By the time we get through sorting out what is just or unjust, the wrongs will have consumed us. 4. I've been told that there are a lot of ethics involved when dealing with animals that are invertebrates. Otherwise, when a person is working with invertebrates, such as bugs, snails, etc., then there are not so many ethical controls and a person can work with them without too much constraint, paperwork, and ethics committees. First, about when did such a system develop? Why did such a system develop? Should the system develop to also consider invertebrates as precious as vertebrates?

Dear all, I have recently updated the forum permissions to require members to have 30 posts or more before they are able to reply to threads or create new threads in this forum. Since SFN is a primarily science forum, this is a requirement we have on a variety of the off-topic fora. Thanks, Dave

Your an idiot if you think that there is any hard evidence toward evolution, I'm not saying that there's a lot towards religion, but intelligent design is more likely than the rest. One must have faith in anything you believe in, whether evolution or theism or even of you don't believe in anything. Darwinism is just as much a religion as the catholic church. Only instead of being dominant in europe it's dominant in America. And I promise it will bring the downfall of many nations to come

Take a listen! Allen West is is a US ARMY, Lt. Colonel: retired. He delivered a message which I thought was quite interesting. A Floridiana, the Colonel was elected to the US Congress in Nov. 2010. Regardless of your political beliefs or views, give me your opinion on his statements! Below are a couple interviews focusing on the man. http://newzeal.blogspot.com/2010/11/allen-west-on-how-to-defeat-radical.html

As I've delved further into science, I've realised how much research depends on animal testing. Lots of experiments in genetics and medicine are based on knock-out mice, rabbit-developed antibodies, and many more besides. Personally I'm a vegetarian. However, I ultimately believe that human life (and happiness) is more important than other animals. I'd probably do animal testing if it was necessary for medical research. What are your thoughts on this in vivo stuff? Do you think animal testing is good, bad, or something else? Are animal models required for biological and medical advancements?

I surely must have missed something in the commentary below since I just can't seem to understand todays radicalism. Last night I listened as a professed "MAN of GOD", Al Sharpton; demanding that Rush Limbaugh be excommunicated and thrown off the air ways of radio! What in the hell is going on? Have we gone completely bonkers? Who is Al Sharpton to demand anyone be barred, banned and yet, be given air time to espouse such hatred and ignorance? To my way of thinking, the guy is a nut case at best. The Kook depicted below, is just a Kook! The Al Sharptons of this world, and anyone who think as they do; are the ones we really need to be worried about! http://ww2.cox.com/…

So the question is simple, "Is the death penalty ethical?'. To be more specific is it ethical for someone convicted in a fair trail of their peers to be sentenced to death for the crimes he or she committed? Is it ethical or certain crimes and situations and not others? In my opinion there are many circumstances in which the death penalty would be ethical. If a person has shown a blatant disrespect for human life and decency numerous times it would appear to me that they have lost their right to live. What are your opinions?

Many of you may think something like this is my favorite kind of topic. But I assure you, there's nothing farther from the truth. I would much rather be talking about an Ice Cream Social, Thanksgiving Dinner, Christmas, New Years Eve, A Wedding, Birthday Party. Anything other than madness such as this. Can it be stopped? I doubt it. But it could be reined in to some degree if we tried. Tim McVeigh lived years and months too long after his horrific deed in Oklahoma. Another madman, who committed the Ft. Hood massacre will likely be around far longer than he should, for his "Unholy Deed". The Hinkley kid who gunned down Presisent Reagan? His life should have ended a c…

I once read an article in an 18th century science journal which raised this topic, but it seems that despite the long history of the problems of monogamy being recognized, society seems quite inert with respect to suggesting any changes. An old adage says that if you put a penny in a jar for every time you have sex during your first year of marriage, and take a penny out of that jar for every time you have sex after the first year, you will never empty the jar no matter how long you are married. Since sex is quite important and is now culturally recognized as something good which should be promoted, why do we have as the central social institution of our culture a fo…

Why is bullying illegal in Massachusetts if people are supposed to have freedom of speech. You have a right to insult other people if your statements are generic and not clearly lies. Just because someone committed suicide doesn't make bullying a crime.

How can a person brutally murder another, and then only expect to be locked up in an asylum for the remainder of their life or until they are fit to stand trial? And all at tax payers expense? Me, I believe these individuals should be dispatched as soon as the law permits. The guy in question butchered a female psychitrist because she happened to be in the office he went to rob. A meat cleaver no less, to do the job. What I am saying is; where do we draw the line? If you are unfit to stand trial for such a murder, why should you be fit enough to live at tax payers expense for God knows how long? We shoot horses and sick cattle don't we? http://ww2.cox.com/myconnectio…

#8 10 October 2010 - 03:25 AM jimmydasaint Atom: I think Bernard Shaw was an intelligent and articulate man, who had many sensible things to say. However, I believe that what you are trying to do, rigney, is to stir up some Islamophobia and 'test the waters' by posting about Bernard Shaw. If you are old enough, I assume that you would have hated Communism with the same fervour when it was popular to do so. I just want to live and let live. I don't see the need to post in Ethics. What was Shaw's ethical dilemma? Shaws dilemma? None. A great intellectual. But before accusing me of being a hate monger with Islamophobia, I suggest you take a look at the bits b…

We are very congruous in this country. If I began trying to name the nationalities making up the US, I probably wouldn't even come close. So why?, Why, when you pick up the phone and call your bank, an accountant, the grocery store or your PCP, you're asked up front; Press 1 for English, then the voice changes to Spanish?????? What in the hell is going on? Listen!, I have nothing against anyone living here in the states. But freedom reaches out only so Damned far. Why don't we extend the same courtesy to Germans, French, English, Russians, Poles, Slavic, Arabic (in all dialects), and Chinese, (in all dialects) and etc. etc. and etc.? Have we gone totally "BONKERS"? Or has…
