The news has become more negative and gruesome in the past few years, to the point where it seems the press has given up on everything positive. Look at the Lisa Montgomery situation, a story that no news station would have touched with a 50 foot pole a decade ago, but today the whole ordeal is explained in grotestue detial. Why does everyone(including me) all of a sudden show a sadistic side and listen to these terrible stories. Why the change?

Hi all, can anyone tell me the lowest sample size needed for an experiment? Coolican (Research Methods and Statistics in Psychology) suggests 25-30 as the lowest number. So does this mean having 25 in each condition, or 25 as the overall size? I ask because I 19 in condition A, 100 in the other). I was unable to get a matched sample size. Please advice if at all possible. Thanks,

I once saw a beautiful little girl who was labeled mentally retarded and had MS. The problem was she was put into the menatl health unit because of her behavior. Her parents stated she was behaving radically and they did not understand why so they admitted her. Come to find out later she was protesting in her own way, her parents behavior in disciplining her. I have a autistic/mentally retarded son as well. I have no degree or PHD in Psychology or psychiatry yet I knew aht the problem was. I told the staff what the problem was and was transfered to another unit because I did'nt have a degree in the field. Does a degree or PHD really qualify you as a qualified profes…

Can a 'gut feeling' be described psycologically? I was playing poker earlier on, and I have always had these, but I keep getting gut feelings about the next cards to be placed. Sometimes I really end up right. Actually most times. But that isn't the point. Is a feeling a chemical reaction in the brain? An enigma made by our belief that we even have a gut feeling (that really doesn't make much sense)? To rephrase that, the belief that the future will come out the way we 'have a feeling' that it will? I don't get how to describe it.

  6. 8:04 AM 6/13/05 - The unique thing about this dream was that it did not end before I woke up, in fact waking up had very little if any, effect on this dream at all. Also what happened in the dream before it got to the point of offering to supply kids with a cup of water who were thirsty was forgotten. After I either posted on the internet that I would give thirsty kids water or told people in person, I received two requests from the fire department in e-mail in the dream to send some water. There were bottled water company links on the e-mail, so I immediately thought to e-mail bottled water companies and request free boxes of those little plastic bottles of wat…

  9. I seriously think we (in America) should bring back this age-old traditional and way of teaching, teens my age have far too little to fear in our lives, and without fear we are far less motivated to do anything constructive with our time. Some of us chose drugs, others video games, and other even science related websites. Parents should be able to hit their children to teach them a lesson.

As usual my brain has come up with an odd theory that I need to hammer out with other minds to see if there is any value whatsoever in it. Starting point was the thought that all the complex equations devised hundreds of years ago to approximate reality are now finding an unintended use in making Computer generated films like Lord of the rings and so on. Added to that the thought that many of these equations describe events that seem to exist outside out three dimensional world. Call it Hyperspace. So without going into the details of it. It struck me as kind of funny that we might actually dream in hyperspace. And that reason can not exist in hyperspace ( …

What is all this preoccupation we seem to have with “one” Not “four” or “three” but “one”. This unifying theory, that concept of identity, this idea of a single truth, that big bang. A single second of awareness where the past is gone and the future is yet to be… Why one …why unity? Why just one?

Hello, I'm a PhD student in the Department of Psychology at Goldsmiths College, University of London. I'm researching various aspects of a commonly experienced sleep disorder called sleep paralysis. This is the feeling of not being able to move either as you are going to sleep or as you are waking up. It might feel as though you cannot move your arms or legs and cannot speak or cry out. I am developing a new questionnaire to investigate sleep paralysis experiences and I need to analyse responses to an existing questionnaire before I start. I have this brief questionnaire on my webpages and I need people who have had sleep paralysis once or more to complete it. …

(Hopefully, this thread on differences between male and female handwriting is in the right forum.) I admire beautiful handwriting, and I often think to myself things like "she has such elegant handwriting" (secretly I am incredibly envious!). Those kinds of thoughts make me wonder how we form gender preconceptions about authors handwriting, especially when papers are written anonymously or contains no gender-revealing personal detail at all. I find most people can correctly guess an authors gender based on handwriting with success rate greater than chance - so, my first question is, if gender can be guessed so easily from handwriting then which properties make han…

Have there ever been any studies done to show that one's freedom to express him/herself artistically is negatively correlated with the amount of violence he/she is prone to engage in? I started wondering this when I was thinking about these gothic/heavy-metal rock bands like Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie, Limp Biscuit, etc. and how I've never heard of them going to jail for serious crimes of any sort. Do you think that artistic expression serves as an alternate channel through which to "exercise our demons"? If so, do you think this is why countries with the most violence are usually also the ones with the most censorship on the press and individual expression?

I am wondering how people view pedophiles and child sexual abusers. Do you think they are insane? Do you think they are repeating a cycle of abuse? Could pedophilia simply be another sexual preference? Here is a link I found that is quite educational: http://www.darkness2light.org/faq/faqs_2.asp However, please understand that many of these people don't actually think they are doing something wrong. Some believe they are liberating children to express their sexual feelings. I think they are exploiting children. Because we do not know how to truly treat them, I think they should be identified early and isolated from the general population. This w…

Ok, I had a few questions, if anyone's got answers. Also I have a few points and notes to add about this topic. 1. Cannibus Dosage-Method. When someone says "Therepeutic Use of Cannibus" are they talking about smoking cannibus or some sort of other dosage? For instance, cannibus has been shown to help AIDS patients with stress, and it has been shown to alleviate many other cognitive problems such as attention-span, creativity, decreased agitation. But does this refer to smoking it, because then these benefits have to be weighed with the costs? A note on the costs: the above benefits seem to be mutually exclusive to some psychological costs: you either prof…

I am not currently experiencing severe depression (though i have at some periods in my life), and i am beginning to think depression may only be a byproduduct of some other problem, i am pretty sure i have OCD, who knows what else. The thing is i'm generally drifting through life with inhibiting anxiety and only brief occasional moments of being at peace, which often are cut short by realizing how much time i've wasted and how hopeless it seems that things will ever change. I dont know how severe my case is obviously because i am blinded within the prison of my own psychology most of the time. It's probably not as bad as many people's but I know its worse than i know beca…

this topic may have been discussed already, but I think it should be discussed without dealing with religion or God. can any materialist give sufficient proof mental states are purely material? To me, the fact that they coincide with nueral firing seems irrelevant (can it even be disproved that thoughts cause neural activity rather than vice versa?). I see awareness as the main issue; how can the laws of physics account for awareness/subjective experience? We're no where near understanding how we could contruct a computer with subjective experience and self-awareness. Things like beliefs and motives seem to have no resemblance to anything in physical theory. Obviously if …

Anyone hear the term "Anti-Social Personality Disorder"? Well, why didn't anyone ever come up with the idea that this is really Anti-Personality Society Disorder? Why couldn't it be that Society is abusive towards some inhabitants, and this turns into mental problems for them, such as anger? To resolve this issue we can ask: as "Anti-Social Personality" is shown and known to be influenced by an environmental variable, what is this variable?
