I am interested in the psychology of art creation and appreciation with special emphasis on photography. My photographic colleagues are not much interested in this line of thought, but I hope some of you are. I wonder what science can tell us about the hardwiring of our brains for judging composition, etc. I have found Gazzaniga's ideas in his book "Human" very helpful. I need more references and links. Excerpts from my writings on this subject have been posted by Michael Reichmann at http://luminous-landscape.com/essays/art2.shtml Also, I BLOG about science in photography at photophys.com. Please visit.

  4. I first heard this on a radio show where a doctor (don't remember his name) on the subject of mind, body and health mentioned that people with multiple personality disorders or dissociative identity disorders can change eye colour, have diabetes in one personality and allergies in another. This seems incredible to me. As a lay person I haven't been able to find studies on this. Google did turn up these anecdotes (along with a few flaky sites). Could someone shed some light on this matter? Have there been cases of changes in blood type (solid scientific proof)? http://pagingdrgupta.blogs.cnn.com/2008/04/15/herschel-walkers-alter-personalities/ From the comments sec…

  5. I was searching for some CME online and found a great upcoming neurology in clinical practice course by Mayo Clinic at http://www.cmenetworks.com/cme/10641/1/Continuing-Medical-Education-Neurology-CME-Neurology-in-Clinical-Practice-Mayo-Clinic-Chicago-IL-July-16---18-2009/Page1.html The course is coming up soon on July 16 – 18 2009 so I thought I’d give everyone a heads up. I’ve attended Mayo’s courses before and found it’s pretty worthwhile because of the emphasis on case-based presentations and coverage of recent advances.

Has anyone related affective times in life with more vivid dreaming, like pleasant dreaming in color and with details remembered long after ? And in periods of not feeling love for someone, to diminish, or dreams ceasing at all ? -Not related to make sense or not about the dream, nor to ease of falling asleep-

Does psychology have an explanation of how we came to have morals? I heard that humans don't have insticts, is that true? If so the morals can't come from instinct and if so, i.e. nature plays no role then all that seems be left is nurture. Thoughts? Pete

I'm curious as to opinions. I took an introductory psychology course last semester where 'g,' general intelligence, was, at least, considered a legitimately measurable factor, even if others might be more important. And I just finished (or am finishing; I've got 3 of the essays in the back of 1996 edition to go) Stephen Jay Gould's The Mismeasure of Man, which obviously has a rather strong opinion as to 'g,' holding it as basically a reified mathematical artifact (maybe that's stating Gould's position too strongly, but he's definitely skeptical of the concept). So, what are some other opinions? Do you think 'g' is meaningful?

  10. This question is intriguing me since I was a child, when I was a little kid I use to sleep in the same room as my sister, since I was afraid of dark I spent a long time to get sleep, and my sister always fell asleep quickly. I always thought, Is her "now" living tomorrow? I mean, this half an hour that passed for me trying to sleep, would be her first half an hour of tomorrow (from her point of view)? I think there will be no way to prove this scientifically, as far as I know, time is relative but depending on speed, is not any consciousness matter, so, assuming that all humans are moving at same speed we all should be experiencing time the same way. Right? Eve…

For lack of time, I shall be brief in my question. Generally speaking, based upon the current state of society, in its general thought ideas, and morals, it is easy to understand how our subjective morality may lead to the development of commonly accepted ideas and principles. Almost as if an opinion, and socio- economic status of the average person, however it is even more interesting to note how this society is prone to a negative attitude towards outsiders and more importantly, those who fail to meet the norm. It has been seen in numerous cases, from bullying, to propaganda, and assimilation, and architypes, however, I'm rather interested, why does this occur? Why is…

if you`re not one you won`t understand, if you ARE one, please chime in what floats your boat?, gives you "that" Buzz?, gets you off? I was trying to explain this to a friend about an hour ago, she though I was a bit crazy! I have a few things that I do just for kicks, not because it`s safe (I`ve often been injured sometimes seriously), and it`s never done with the thought that you`ll get hurt, but there`s that CHANCE/RISK that you might and it`s that RISK that makes it interesting. is there anyone else out there that feels the same? or would flick a lit cigarette into a pot of gunpowder just to see what would happen? (I don`t mean that part literaly). p…

  14. I'm not sure if I'm opening this thread in the right spot or not, so if I find this has been moved, my feelings will not be damaged in the least... Now don't laugh...but, I was watching the NFL channel on Jimmy Johnson and his 1992 Dallas Cowboy team. Apparently Johnson is a psychology major, although I'm not sure of any detail beyond that statement. He used some of these tools throughout his career, and I was taken by a statement he made, that we've all heard time and again throughout our lives about expectations and motivating others to meet them, like our kids, or in Johnson's case, his players. He said, "Treat a man as he is, and he will remain as he is. T…

  15. If I imagine an absract shape then I probbably don't impose much personality on it. I say probably because the brain has an odd way of working in all directions at once and I may be wrong but let us presume for now that this abstract shape is personalityless. If however I imagine a person I would have to look up what a person is like in my mind. I could constuct somone from characteristics or remember a spacific person I already know about. Either way I might apply some personality to it. So does this person see me as I see it with a gap in there experance as I am not imagining them. How about in a daydream, how about in a dream, how about a dream charecter in a l…

Many children and young adults nowadays are being diagnosed with these two attention deficit disorders to explain their lack of attention span. The subject, however, is debatable. Some say the "diseases" exist, while others say it is an excuse for lack of sleep, bad nourishment, and too much television. Those that are diagnosed are often given medicines to help treat the disorder that they may or may not actually have, so the question is, do these disorders actually exist?

This topic has probably been placed here before, But do you think it's possible for two to share the same soul? I have a friend who I swear I share the same soul with. Our thought pattern is coincidentally similar, It seems like we're thinking the same thing at all times. I'll even talk to him with thought alone and he's either hearing my thoughts or thinking the same thing I am. It's just too freaky. we'll even talk about something we were both thinking about over the weekend (that was the same thing) and nap at the same times during the day. it's weird.

  24. One of the main points of this idea is defining what an original thought is. All the time we come up with what we think is an original thought, yet this thought has come from somewhere. Humans cannot imagine something that excludes everything they have ever seen. Therefore, are we incapable of original thought? If we are incapable of original thought, is this one of the limiting factors on our advancement as a species?

I have noticed that in many cultures, it is expected that family members love and care about each other. This has made me wonder why we are expected to love these people in our lives. Are we expected to love family members simply because we have similar genetics? Or, is this love created through being forced to live together under the same roof? Could another possible explanation could be that we are ethically driven to love the people that care for us, such as our parents?
