Hi, I am new to everything medicine and was hoping someone could tell me the field in which scientists actively research causes and cures of diseases ect Do you have to go to med school or do you study medical science at uni if you were interested in being a researcher? Where does the money go to when raised in say a fight cancer charity? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Some senses are bad such as pain, some are good such as nice food. But at the end of the day, they're simply electrical impulses interpreted by the brain. Its a bit hard to get your head round but, why do we dislike pain? or like a nice taste?, there both 2 different sensations, however one we are taught to dislike, and one we are taught to like. Its not a very tangible idea, but why do we dislike pain? Im not talking about evolutionary advantage, or why we should want to im talking about what it is that the brain does, to make a sensation "bad" or "good", because they are both still sensations. Secondly, is it possible to change our perspectives, i know peopl…

I'm currently a student in the molecular bio faculty, but the topics that are introduced to us right now are pretty scarce, enzymology, proteomics, molecular physiology, etc. and none of them actually goes into great details to get me interested in a particular field... is it because molecular bio is a generalized name for all these categories and that I have to choose one of the streams after I graduate in order to continue studying under this field?

I think this has to be placed on the Medical Science forum but I'm not so sure on where (probably Genetics) but I want to be sure. Like the title mentioned above, I have several questions. I'm doing a research on the human papilloma virus. I found that this is the cause of genital warts (or veneral warts) which occurs in humans (both men and woman). For men, it occurs near penis while for women, it occurs vaginal lips, inside the vagina, on the cervix, or around the anus. This disease is afffected, or more likely transmitted, through the sexual contact. Its effect is that it causes cervical lesions and increase risk of cervical cancer. Its genus is papillomavirus …

Hi everyone, I'm interested in finding out what people know about pharmacists' education, both undergraduate and postgraduate, and also what you think about pharmacists taking on new roles such as prescribing and medication reviews, and the increase in products being made available from pharmacies without prescription (such as simvastatin) I'd also be interested in your views on pharmacies selling products which have no evidence base, such as homeopathic products and copper bracelets. I can only add comments from a UK (possibly European) point of view. Cheers

I was just reading up about convection here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convection and it said: "Convection occurs in atmospheres, oceans, and planetary mantles, and chicken soup." and I just found the random "chicken soup" was quite amusing, so I clicked on it and went here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken_soup interestingly it said: although it does say that: just thought it was interesting.

as one or 2 of you already I`ve suffer quite some greif of late with toothache etc... I bought some `Sensodyne` toothpaste on reccomendation, thus far it`s ok the active ingredient is KCl! at 3% so I figured that since Lo-Salt is 66% KCl and the rest made up with NaCl (so it doesn`t taste to strange). I wondered if this would make an effective mouthwash? I know that after having a tooth out they say to rinse regularly with "salt water", so what if this "salt water" was 66% KCl )) surely it`ll have the same effect As Well as the nerve de-sensitisation ability. does anyone have any data to the contrary? or if that 33% NaCl will cancel the KCl ac…

Do you ever buy products listing chemicals or fragrances? Those are affecting your health. Every time you are exposed to smog, car exhaust, fragranced products, etc., those chemicals create stress in your body which is forced to respond to it. For a while, your body may be able to respond simply with “adaptation.” The effects of stressors, including chemicals can build up to such a level over time that your body cannot adapt to it and your body will react. If a significant source or the stress that your body is adapting to is from a chemical or chemicals, your body will react to that chemical or those chemicals. The point where your body has been exposed enough to react i…

This is the most amazing thing I've ever seen. It looks like it can revolutionize the way that we treat and help burn victims, let alone large cuts and other things that could happen. It'll be amazing if this works. Check it out: http://www.livescience.com/technology/050201_skin_printing.html

I've recently heard the term "Ionizing Cells" which - as far as I understood - stands for an effect caused when a biological cell is being "stripped" from ions - usually due to high radiation - which causes cell mutation and growth and aventually tumors and cancer. First of all, is that true, or have I understood it wrong? Secon, if that's indeed true, then Skin Cancer - caused by ionizing radiation from the sun - and other tumors caused by radiations are "understood" by this cause and effect - but then, why are cigarettes, smoke and other polluted substances also concidered to cause cancer? Thanks heaps, ~moo

I believe that all illegal narcotics should be legalized in every country around the world. People should have the right to do whatever they want to do with their bodies as long as they are not causing any involuntary physical harm to someone else in the process. For example, imagine that two men are in a car. The passenger takes out a cigarette but before lights it he proceeds to ask the driver “do you mind if I smoke?” If the driver responds by saying no I don’t mind he is consenting to inhale second hand smoke. Illegal narcotics will always be a problem in this world until people are willing to do something about the lack of pleasure and wellbeing that most people…

Hey guys, I have been consuming dairy and other animal products for my entire life. I have also recently come onto the animal rights front, and have been studying PETA propaganda / ideas. One of their campaigns states that beer is better for you than milk, and in another part of the ad, says that at just two glasses a day, increases male's chances of getting prostate cancer. My whole question is....Is this information legit!?! PETA has been known to make some pretty outlandish statements and then retract them, if any of you have seen their fur opposition page, you'll understand what I mean. Can dairy products and other forms of animal products be that bad fo…

If you consitently stay up late (say sleep at 4 am) and wake up late (say 12 noon), is this bad for you? You are still getting 8 hours of sleep per day. The only problem I can think of with this sleeping habit is that you tend to be up when there is no sunlight and this may lead to vitamin D deficiencies...but this is probably minor and you can probably compensate for vitamin D deficiencies by drinking more milk.

Seems I always tell my life's stories here, but if someone can shed some light, I'd really appreciate it. My problem with obesity started before I was a year old. My mother used to state with pride, that I doubled my weight within 6 weeks after I was born. I went to doctor after doctor. I asked them to check my thyroid - they checked T4 and it was always borderline "low-normal". For years I was told that my weight problem arose from me not being able to push myself away from the table. In early 2002 my husband was dx'd with diabetes, and was referred to an endocrinologist. Since we were both overweight, I decided to move to his endocrinologist, in the hope…

How do I find the information on what every known research facility in the world that works on alleviating a mortal condition is doing? I desperately need this information. If you know or have an idea of how to go about finding out, or can come up with any creative ideas to try to go about finding out then please let me know. Its a part of a very important project Im working on to list all the jobs needed to extend life spans and motivate people to do them.
