I really want to start including more canned salmon in my diet. It's such a good deal. 35 grams of protein and lots of phenomenal fish oil, without the lemon cough syrup taste, in every serving. The only thing is the dreaded preservatives. However, the USDA lists it as "'generally recognized as safe', along with salt, vinegar, and baking powder," according to Wikipedia. Can this really be so bad, eating 2 cans of this per day? I really like salmon and this is definitely the best deal on it at $1-2 per can. Does anybody have any other information about it?

My question is the same as my topic- What are antioxidants? How it works, and what is its significance? What is the best source of antioxidants? Do their deficiency or excess cause serious troubles?

It sounds almost too good to be true: a cheap and simple drug that kills almost all cancers by switching off their “immortality”. The drug, dichloroacetate (DCA), has already been used for years to treat rare metabolic disorders and so is known to be relatively safe. It also has no patent, meaning it could be manufactured for a fraction of the cost of newly developed drugs. Evangelos Michelakis of the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, and his colleagues tested DCA on human cells cultured outside the body and found that it killed lung, breast and brain cancer cells, but not healthy cells. Tumours in rats deliberately infected with human cancer also shrank …

So I've taken up smoking in the past year as a somewhat regular habit, and I'm curious as to the incidence of smoking related illness as a function of average number of cigarrettes smoked in some time frame. I like smoking so I won't be giving it up completely any time soon, but it would be interesting to know what I was risking and possibly what risk threshhold I'm willing to accept.

Well, I've had this for several years now, possibly longer...and I wondered if this is actually a condition. It doesn't really bother me, but if there's a particular event or something I'm looking forward to i.e getting home from work on a Friday and looking forward to a few beers with friends, I feel physically sick. I've been known to get home on a Friday, and rush to the toilet and vomit, just out of pure excitement. If I'm leaving work and I know I'm off abroad somewhere, or off to a festival, it's really bad...and I can feel nauseas for up to a day, have no appetite et.c Am I just too easily excitable, or is there something else going on here ? Obviously it'…

Hi everyone, Calorie restriction (CR) is the practice of limiting dietary energy intake in the hope that it will improve health and retard the processes associated with aging. Typically reducing an animal’s calorie intake by 30 to 40% of what is usual for that particular species, whilst maintaining a proper level of nutrition results in an increase in general vigour together with an increase in longevity. Note that this reduction in calorie intake includes a reduction in carbohydrate, fats and protein. This increase in life expectancy and general health for calorie restricted animals has been seen in a wide variety of experiments conducted in a number of organisms. …

I was just watching the news and that thing about the Human Pampillo Virus vaccination in 12-year old girls came up. I was actually quite shocked by the arguements put forward by the people opposing it. The arguments can be summed up in one sentence: The moment the needle touches her skin, your daughter will become a hooker and sex addict. Instead they want to preach abstinance. none of this makes any sense. I doubt the people who approve these sorts of things would let it be released if it caused this and there is no medical reason why it should. If kids think this means its okay to have unprotected sex, then they don't know enough about sex and we should…

Given one of the body's organs, let's say the pancreas, cells making up the organ are continually being replaced as present cells age and die. For some reason one division of cells produces new ones which differ in their reproductive process; they reproduce too soon. Those new cells, reproducing too quickly, constitute a "pancreatic cancer" Assuming the above happens, and that it happens frequently, do you believe the normal body is quickly aware of the abnormal cells, and makes every effort to eliminate them? If so, it follows that should the body be unable to totally eliminate those relatively few new abnormally multiplying cells, the pancreas has become "cancer…

William of Oakham, mispronounced as Occam, used to live not far from where I now stay....but around 700 years ago. His lasting legacy to philosophy, and indeed to problem solving, was the principle called "Occam's Razor", which essentially states that in trying to resolve to a problem, try and reach for the simplest solution that explains all parts of the problem. Occam's razor implies that in reaching a solution, try and make as few assumptions as possible. I have outlined this in bold, as this is the key to interpreting Occam's razor. This is also called the "Principle of Parsimony". Lest people use this blindly, let me quote something I read, "Occam's razor is …

I'm going to the doctor tomorrow after receiving some heavy blows to my head. Since the accident the hearing in my right ear has been affected. As a musician this is a concern, the problem started a few days ago, then stopped and has now come back again. Anything with a low frequency has excentuated resonance...as though my ear drum is vibrating that little bit longer than in my left ear. So supposing I hear a frequency of around e.g 40hz it will have a longer release than to what my left ear is hearing. I'm sure I'll get a straight answer tomorrow, but I was wondering if anyone could put my mind at rest or tell me if my ear is actually damaged in anyway. …

I've read too much calcium (Hypercalcemia) encourages Calcitonin secretion, which is linked in various studies to inhibiting GH. Is it possible too much calcium would stunt growth? Link to info about Calcitonin secretion http://www.vivo.colostate.edu/hbooks/pathphys/endocrine/thyroid/calcium.html Various studies http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=2627752&dopt=Abstract http://endo.endojournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/120/4/1377

Hi! I need help with the following theory on a phytomedicine mechanism-of-selectivity created by my pharmacist- He believes herbal medicines are taken up as a complex (chemically bonded) consisting of a bioactive compound responsible for medicinal action (a phytochemical) surrounded by other (unknown) plant molecules. This complex would then be taken up by white bloodcells (neutrophiles) which delivers the complex to the target organ. At this site the complex then disintegrates and is ready to perform its healing actions. (This type of transport would, according to him, account for the fact that phytochemicals are often undetectable in serum while having a big imp…

Hi, I graduated with a BS in chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh last spring. Now, I am working on my masters in education. I am not sure if I want to teach anymore, and the uncertainty of finding a job in education is scaring me. So, I was looking at some other possible career routes that I could take, and I came across pharmaceutical sales. I was wondering if any of you are pharmaceutical sales representatives, and if you wouldn’t mind filling me in what I need to do to prepare for interviews for this position. (The company that I am looking to apply to is Glaxo Smith Kline.) Thanks!

A new study suggests that prayer actually does give a positive effect. Of course, I still remember the last study, which suggested that prayer on behalf of a patient was ineffective, and even a bad thing when the patient was aware of it. And so now I have to wait to see what the reaction to the latest one is. What's your take?

Vitamin B17 was the topic of great controversy over 30 or so years ago when some of the worlds top scientists claimed that when consumed the components of the seed make it 100 % impossible to develop cancer and will kill existing cancer in the most cases. Who here heard about this? As you may know Vitamin BH17 is found in most fruit seeds, manely Apricot seeds. The pharmacuticals companies together with the medical establishments pushed the FDA into making it ilegal to sell 'raw' apricot seeds or vitamin B17 with information about it's effects on cancer. Even to this day you cant get raw apricot seeds in your health food store only the sun dried ones which have all t…

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/6517645.stm What a break through. Read the article. Scientists have actually grown heart valve tissue. I think it's supposed to be coming into use over the next decade. Hopefully when it comes in it will relieve some of the pressure on organ donation. With an aging population, I guess the demand for organ transplant increases; so it may come at just the right time.
