We've all heard the warnings: do to many drugs and you'll end up like Ozzy, permanently brain damaged. But I've done a bit of research when I was doing my psych degree and I found it extremely hard to find the studies that explain the exact details of how drugs do this, what kind of damage they cause, how much is too much, what kind of drugs cause what kind of damage, and so forth and so on. I don't doubt that the evidence is out there, but I'd really like to come across some good ones. Does anyone have any knowledge to impart? Gibby

If the brain is essentially a densely compacted bundle of neurons with interconnections that allow electric/chemical signals to be processed along pathways, how do scientists figure out these pathways? That is, what techniques do they use to figure out where a signal travels in the brain? Say you are given a starting point in the brain (like a sensory input point) and you want to know where and how far that signals goes, how would one do that? Gib

(I thought it's appropriate to post this in the neuroscience section. If a moderator feels it should be somewhere else, please move the thread ) I saw a short document-type interview with Kevin Warwick (the "cyborg" guy, Google for the name if you don't know about him), and started to think about that sort of cyborg-stuff. In the near future, do you think the average Joe has the possibility to get even simple microchip and other implants plugged into his nerves and brain, being then able to detect things like infra-red, uv-light, ultrasound and who knows what, that can't normally be detected with the regular human senses? Comments?

How can that happen?

Has any work been done to create an anti-aging medicine? Nostradamus mentions something about finding a cure for age. I know little of aging, but as far as I know the cells wear out from dividing. There must be something that could be done right?

Hi, what do you think of this article? (this was written after these scienists were supposed to have found a Einstein-Rosen bridge in the mid-brain magnetically by using technology that shows the magnetic fields of the mid-brain in real 3d time) Neurological fields and altered states Dr. A: Please explain how the cerebral magnetic fields of the mid-brain change as a function of ASC’s, altered states? Mrs.Dr.L: Ah, so. Very good. What my associates and I did is to go into various trance states induced by the techniques that we all know here (A) Deep Zen/Taoist meditation, absolute stillness, (B) Tai-Chi moving meditation, and © Tantra Toga Cobra Breathing - pu…

Hello, work in pharma and know enough about this stuff to be dangerous, but you can still help!! I've been taking Klonopin for 13 years for anxiety at a low dose and now, pain medication at usual doses doesn't work for me at all. Plus, recently I dislocated my shoulder and the ER doc couldn't believe how much sedative I needed before I was "semi out" enough to have the arm relocated. Finally, during knee surgery, the docs said I needed an incredible amount of anesthesia before I was totally out. Is there a receptor effect or something of that sort from Klonopin and similar med usage that negates the effects of pain meds and anesthetics? If so, is it a permament dy…

Recently cut my hair rather short (about an inch) and kept getting facial flushes and occasionally chills. It's been something over a week, and yesterday did not notice, though is now growing out again too, but is it possible my head just had to relearn how to regulate body heat given the new circumstances?

I am rather confused on this subject. As I understand, learning or memory formation is mainly achieved by synaptic plasticity. I don't think that reinforcing should achieve any learning. Also, I believe that most new synapsis or connections are formed as the result of associative inputs, that is, a connection is strengthened when activated simultaneously with an already active synapsis. Therefore, can a new stimulus that isn't related to the activation of any previous connections lead to new knowledge? Pau

It's known that men and women think differently. If I'm correct, men's brains are more "specialized" (Is that the word I'm looking for?), where one hemisphere controls one set of skills and the other hemisphere, another set of skills. Whereas women usually have their skills connected to both ends of the brain. This is the explaination for why women recover faster from a stroke. My question: What are the possible evolutionary benefits from this system? Why don't men and women think alike?

I have been trying to look for any paper that contains this information -can an axon terminal has two or more different populations of visicles, each with its unique neurotransmitter? If anyone has any idea, please let me know.

Hi every1, i need to find a picture of any type of cell that can be found like in the human body or even animals. But i need to be able to see the interior of the cell (whats inside) and i also need to have the dimensions for it (its size in whatever units, i think itll probably be nano metres). I also need its scientific name. Any type of cell will do. I have been looking for this for a while but cant seem to find it, if anyone has what I am looking for or knows where to get it, plz post immediately. THX in advance.

I want to post this interesting relationship because I want to find out how many people actually realize that the human body has ratios. Does anyone knows the linear function that describes the relationship between lenght of the foot and lenght of the ulna?

Caffeine makes us more alert because of its chemical properties. I once heard that a glass of apple juice first thing in the morning is just as effective. Can this be true? If so, what are the properties in the apple that cause this? I have also heard that the seeds of apples contain cianide. It is said that if you collect enough seeds and pulverize them, the resulting mixture would be deadly. It makes me wonder whether apples contain special properties that don't we know about. An apple tree symbolizes life, and think about Adam and Even and the notion that an apple can keep the doctor away. Any thoughts?

Now, I'm not certain this is the right forum (don't you love reading that line first thing?) but physiology seems to cover it reasonably well. This Saturday I'm planning a full day (8 hours, at least) of writing (a book). I have caffeinated beverages (avoiding sugar, but caffeine is helpful for me, so diet sodas) on my list as it is. I know that that's not the best thing for me, but it'll keep me awake. My question is what kinds of foods should I eat the day before/day of to keep my mind in tip-top condition throughout the day. While I'm at it, I might as well ask what types of activities I should do, as well. I'm sure typing 8 hours straight is not the best treat…

Since I've been deprived of sleep since school has started again, I seem to function better at night. I become more focussed, and more active (educationally). Why exactly is this? Is it the pressure of finishing homework before daybreak? Or just simply adapting to conditions? I wish I had an explanation Does/has this ever happened to anyone else?

I've heard a lot about a program called Eye Q for the computer. It supposedly increases your reading speed by exorcizing the eye with work outs. Has anyone else heard of/have it? Does it work? I really want to increase my reading speed without spending like $300 for a program. Is there any program like it without the cost?

On This particular website: http://science.howstuffworks.com/light4.htm It states an interesting fact: In TOTAL DARKNESS our eyes sense photons? How is that possible? Why would there be photons in COMPLETE DARKNESS? If you walk into the depths of a dark cave, you eyes will never adjust so that you can see where you are going. If our eyes sensed photons, wouldn't all animals be able to see in COMPLETE DARKNESS?

1) I'm told that our brains use 20% of our body's energy. Is this constant? In other words do we use more energy when we are in a stressful situation and less when relaxed? 2) What is the relationship between brain energy demand and temperature? John A

(Neuron) A diagram would be a good thing, and can please include : Nucleus, Chromatin, Nuclear envelope, cytoplasm, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, ribosome, golgi apparatus, vacuole, lysosome, plasma (cell) membrane. Thanks is advance. (I think this belongs in this forum because it is human cells, but not sure)

Hi A few years back in school, by biology teacher told the class that there was an experiment that you can do to make your vision flip upside down for an hour. She never told us how to do it for obvious reasons, but now i want to try it. Does anybody know how to do this or was it just a joke?

Hi everyone, this is my first post here.. I'm an erotica writer and i've been asked to write an article, non-fiction, about selling erotica, and I'm looking for some basic information (in layman terms! LOL) about what parts of the brain are stimulated by sex, as well as what parts are stimulated by language, reading in particular. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks for the help..
