There has been a series on the Today Show about Autism - I hear the blurbs advertising it on my way out the door, but have not been able to see any of the programs. Anyway - one of the blurbs said that the frequency of Autism has increased ten fold in the last decade or so. Is this true, or is it perhaps that the disorder is recognized more readily? If true - what is thought to be the cause - something in the environment?

I am told that Sons are never shorter than their mothers and Daughters are never taller than their fathers. Is there any truth in that? I am not talking about people with growth problems etc.

She's 37 and lives near Washington. I talk to her on the phone fairly frequently, but don't see her often. She called me this morning and the conversation started out, "I don't know how to tell you this." She said she had been having headaches, and they have been getting worse. Yesterday she had vision problems and went to the doctor. He ordered a CT scan of her head. Her doctor called this morning and said there is "an irregularity" in the scan. She is going to have an MRI tomorrow with contrast. She is scared witless. I am very worried. I'm not really asking a question here - I know I'll just have to sit tight until I hear the results. I don't like this…

I always eat 3 times a day and I think I'm pretty fit for my age (I can run fastest in my class and long-distance when I feel perfect (rare) ) But...when it comes to long-distance running all I can think of is food. This is strange because I eat healthy and adequately and my friend doesn't even eat lunch and still run and seem fine. And its not my lungs that I have problem when I run. Is there something wrong with me? If so, how can i fix it? I also have a headache when running.

Why does vomitting make you feel better? It only lasts for a few minutes, but afterwards you feel fine, not sick anymore. Whatever the mechanism is, I'd like to implement it in such a way that I no longer need to run to the washroom and induce vomitting in order to feel normal again. Beer before liquor...

I've heard two theories about how neurons change their interconnections with each other. I'm just wondering which one of them, or both of them, are true. 1) The dentrites of one neuron branch out and make connections with other nearby neuron on their axons. To change a connection, the dendritic branches physical move away from one neuron and connect to another one. 2) Dendritic branches do not move from/to other neurons' axons. Instead the receptors at the connection site change in quantity and type. So if at one site, there are a lot of one kind of receptor that readily reacts to a neurotransmitter that is readily emitted at that site, this site can be easily use…

why do rods recover faster than cones. I know its to do with convergence but how. Is it because they are activated faster due to convergence so they have a kind of headstart over the cones? I need to know soon if poss

The James-Lange theory states that we experience emotion in response to physiological changes in our body. For example, we feel sad because we cry. The Cannon-Bard theory of emotion on the other hand, says basically the opposite: that we cry because we are sad. I've just discovered a new theory: Schacter’s Two-Factor Theory. These are actually all explained on this page. I myself am exploring the hypothesis that there are two components to an emotion (i.e. two things which constitute an emotion): (i) the physiological changes, and (ii) the thoughts (imagined sensations - words, pictures) which accompany these physiological changes. (..similar to the Sc…

History of the Cell: http://www.discoveryofthecell.net/ Waddington (1968), for all his outstanding contributions to biology in the middle and later part of the 20th century, failed to mention the cell as a concept in his paper 'Main biological conceptions'. The cell to him was a reality, an object for investigation, a fact. Only such a fundamental notion can so present itself to one's consciousness that one considers it "something that goes without saying" - an objective phenomenon, like the sea or the stars. But the cell, a concept that took many years to emerge, was by no means an "obvious fact" to all concerned at the outset. The cell concept probably had a no less…

Here in New Zealand BZP is unrestricted, recently I have been taking it quite a bit. Could anyone give me some information on its physiological effects, it seems to behave like an amphetamine, but also feels similar to a extremely strong coffee. Where is it extracted from? Does anyone else here take it? Im searching for my own info now, discussion about BZP is welcome.

I remember watching a show, and reading online, an article that stated that a woman needed surgery that asked for most of her blood to be removed from the body (probably a heart replacement or something), which then sent her into temporary death (quite literally, her body temperature was around 70 or 80 degrees fahrenheit). So one would think that she wouldn't remember any of it (by the way, the surgery was successful and she is still alive today). But, she states that she was in a concious state outside of her body. She said that she was in the corner of the room, watching down on her body, and not really caring about it. She said she felt completely at peace…

Hi! I have several questions that I have been wondering about... I'll start with the first one: Why is there only myelin sheath on the white matter (the outer part of the brain) and not on the grey matter (the inner part of the brain), why does not the grey matter need the insulation, what is its function? Thanks....

What are the stimuli for the production of steroid hormones, such as testosterone and somatropin? I've heard that increased protein consumption can increase production, but have seen no validation. I have also heard that fasting, which results in low blood sugar, can increase production of GH for homeostasis. Are these true or even plausible? What other factors can stimulate production of steroid hormones? "genetic/hereditary" factors are already obvious. Thanks

I have spoke to a few people about the color of peoples eyes after death. It has been said by a few people that the eye color changes. One person said why is this. The best half theorys I can come up with is the loss of Pigments and the draining of the small amount of blood in the eye. anther was that maybe if the eye had two tones the domenent color would remain? I am guessing of course. I would like it if anyone else has any information on this subject
